Could there be stricter rules on dog ownership?

Thinking of getting a dog and came across this article? Could there be stricter rules and regulations on dog ownership?
Many, like the RVC, believe there should be. With so many pet dogs in society – a significant proportion of which have poor social and training skills – many feel there needs to be more interventions to emphasise the importance of responsible dog ownership. We are already seeing more restrictions on dogs in public spaces in the UK. Councils are frequently adopting Public Space Protection Orders, to ban dogs from areas such as public parks, beaches and even car parks.
This is largely as a result of too many people allowing their dogs to foul public spaces and creating tension by walking too many dogs at once. Indeed, in many towns and cities – especially in tourist areas, the numbers of people visiting with a dog has become vastly more noticeable.

MN has taught me many things and one of them is how to identify AI and this OP is the most obvious example of AI that I've ever seen on here.

AI?Aye……you think?

For your information, @CoffeeLipstickKeys , my dogs graduate summa cum laude, honours is far too basic for them.

Of course. A true credit to you. All the tutoring, the heart to heart, the sleepless nights

I'm not a dog hater but not a dog lover either so dog social needs are not at all high on my personal priority list. The human need for spaces in nature and public that aren't totally overrun by dogs takes precedent. Just my opinion. You're free to feel differently of course!

I have never seen anywhere, ever, overrun by dogs.
The only people who say that hate dogs, and even one dog in their sight is classed as too many.

Let me state the obvious
A dog, is not human
A human isn’t a dog
An older adult wearing a jumper has no impact and isn’t comparable to a dog wearing a jumper

I struggle to believe the cruelty to be honest. I bought my dog a coat after we moved to a place with wooden floors and he rattled all night, shivering. I don't use heaters, so fair enough.

Why would you deny an animal comfort just because it's an animal?

My current dogs get asked if they want a coat and sometimes are given a choice between two coats. They are very clear with their choices.

Honestly, I think my boy looks rather fetching in his pjs.

Dogs in general? Really not a fan of other people's dogs. Strongly support laws for dogs on leads (had a dog attacked by an off lead dog before so now zero tolerance) and dedicated off lead areas that you can avoid if you choose. Do not support random dogs off lead in public places like parks, fields, beaches unless dedicated dog areas. Also strongly support compulsory registration (to fund the dog spaces), compulsory microchipping, compulsory desexing unless you are a registered breeder who pays an annual fee (to discourage backyard breeding), a register to link all dogs to their breeders (via microchip) and use of that information to determine the source of dogs in rescue centres / pounds etc Knowing the source of over supply will assist in ensuring dogs aren't treated as commodities.

Plus make puppy farms illegal. There were links in another thread for oodle breeders with 24 breeding dogs. Abhorrent, but apparently they're registered. It should not be permitted. Reduce the number of pups available for impulse purchases. One poster on the thread commented they didn't get a pure bred poodle as none were available. As it should be. If you want a dog you should be prepared to wait.

Ok, would you be happy never seeing anyone at all and just doing exercise in your own garden? Thought not.
Dogs are social animals. Their walks are not just for exercise. They sniff and pick up scents from other dogs. A dog going on a walk in a local park is like them checking up with mates on social media. Sniffing all the scents is like us looking at our FB newsfeed.
Dogs have friends. My mum's greyhound has loads of mates. His little stubby tail (it is docked due to 'happy tail') goes like mad when he sees his friends. Why would you deny a social animal that interaction?

I actually think that dogs and small children should not be in the same household, but no one will ever dare introduce that regulation.

There's a woman in our area 3 kids nothing unusual in that.
A huge XL bully unmuzzled and it takes her for a walk ,she lets her young teen daughter who's glued to her phone the lead loose on her wrist.. what could possibly go wrong.

You mean the shitty dog bums that filthy dog owners are happy to have sliding all over their soft furnishings? 🤮 Not to mention the disgusting dog genitals doing the same. Absolutely minging.

And there we have it 😆

Just responding to the post. There really is no need to take it so personally.

Yes. It's better for dogs to live with people who have the money and land to look after one properly, being honest. It's also better for the public to have less dogs to contend with and have to pay for through e.g. council taxes. The farm life would be the ideal life for a dog, not living in a 3 bed semi going to the local park. Sorry but it's true and always baffled me that people who claim to love dogs can't see it

The thought of my little Cavaliers preferring to herd sheep and sleep in barns rather than potter chase squirrels in the local park and sleep in a nice, warm semi (2 bedrooms) has given me the best laugh I’ve had in ages!

I have no pearls, however your dog has a jumper. Oh dear

Which will be very much needed for this type of dog. Thank goodness that she has a decent owner who cares.
Sorry that you don’t have any pearls, through.

Chinsupmeloves · 28/10/2025 20:34

Unfortunately, as with most things in society, it's the irresponsible of the minority who spoil it for others. There has been a huge change with dogs, you remember the days many roamed about free? There are much stricter rules now and most dog owners abide by them and are responsible. On my walks with my dog I do come across the idiots who can't or don't control their pets but thankfully this isn't the usual case. We have a code - dog in leash, put yoir dog on one if already, a wave don't approach etc. X

Fibrous · 28/10/2025 20:33

Dogs in jumpers you say?

yes there should be tighter controls on dog ownership. We have had to do dog training as a requirement with each greyhound adoption and it’s been great fun and useful, and pretty cheap. £60 or so at the local dogs trust. We have insurance. And our dogs are almost always on lead because their recall will never be good and I worry about the roads. I live in a village where there are a lot of dog owners and almost all of them are well behaved. There are some people who let their dog loose and have no idea where it shits - and the rest of us have to pick it up. Even when you tell them about it, they don’t care. Some people are just dicks.

Essentially ,there has been a significant increase in anthropomorphism
Adults waffling about their fur babies. Describing self as parent to a fucking dog
Adults codependent upon dogs and creating an emotional mess were adults are over enmeshed with dogs
They take their slobbery flea hounds to cafe, coffee shop and just expect everyone to suck it up and be effusive as they are

You're not keen on our canine friends then? While this over pampering of dogs can indeed be seen as cringe, the more important question is the amount of abuse and suffering they they endure due to diabolical 'owners'.

Gruffporcupine · 28/10/2025 20:27

YeOldeGreyhound · 28/10/2025 20:15

Ok, so dogs are just for well off people then. Right.
Never mind the pensioners with little to no family who have a dog as a lifeline and companion.
Or people like me who live with MH issues and find their dog a comfort and protective factor.

Both people can look after their dogs very well already without your rules.

Darklane · 28/10/2025 20:23

If for dog owners why not for cat owners?
They come into my garden, use it as a lavatory, kill the songbirds, shrews, voles etc. At least my dogs chase them off if they see them, never kill wildlife & are ALWAYS cleaned up after whether on my property or out for a walk.

I have my bingo card out ready.
Give it a couple of pages, and there will be talk of dog anuses. Dog haters are obsessed with dog bums.

I don't hate dogs. But unfortunately there are costs, both financial and environmental, to having so many dogs in public spaces and therefore impacting the public. It's for this reason that I think ownership should be where that cost is absorbed. Make it much more expensive and only people who are very, very invested in dogs and have the money and right setup are likely to get them. This is better both for dogs and people in general in my view

Edited

There is much evidence for the physical and psychological benefits of dog ownership. Probably saving the nhs significant money. There is also much evidence for the damage done to the countryside environment (including literal crap left behind) by walkers and cyclists. But we won’t ban them, because it isn’t all of them.
You’re suggesting that only the super rich, with their own rolling acres, should be allowed the joy of owning a dog.
This would be very sad.

Sorry, but I can not relate to what you are on about. If you hate dogs, then even if you see one in the course of a day, that will be "too many".

I have a dog, and I love dogs. I am not a fan of yappy dogs that are small and their behaviour is excused due to their size. I don't like seeing dog poo that has been left on the grass or the pavement. I don't like off lead dogs bounding up to my on lead one and the owner saying "it is ok, they are friendly", when the very act of running up to my dog has scared her.

It is people who ruin nature spaces, not dogs.
