Dd wants to be an artist and is taking part in Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the Year! This was filmed back in Easter during her school holidays and is being aired tomorrow night. It's terrifying! If you enjoy art, or tv or have a kid and know what it's like to want everything to go well for them, please join me in hoping the judges aren't too mean! www.rubymitcham.com
This is her self-portrait entry.

I just watched the episode and thoroughly enjoyed it. I think your dd ‘s portrait was amazing and Emily Atack obviously did too.

Thank you so much, all! It was really interesting to watch the time lapse of her painting Emily. She’s put that on her social media. It really shows her approach on the day - which if I’m honest was a little different from usual, but then she did have only 4 hours and lots of interruptions.

She is very talented. Amazing work.

Wow, OP - you must be so proud. Ruby’s portrait was absolutely wonderful and obviously went straight to Emily Atak’s heart. Huge congratulations to Ruby!

I watched the episode yesterday evening and thought your Ruby was amazing. So talented, and lovely herself! And all credit to her for putting herself out there. I loved both her submission and her portrait of EA. And clearly Emily herself loved it too!
Massive congratulations 👏 👏 👏 👏

Just watching the repeat on Sky Arts. It takes a lot of self confidence to work publicly to time. Well done her!

Chickenhorse · 29/10/2025 22:45

Honestly, I think that Ruby’s painting was exceptional and by far the best there, it may not have looked exactly like Emily, but I don’t think the others looked any more like her. Her actual painting in limited time under pressure was incredible. I was so excited when Emily picked Ruby’s painting to take home. I honestly would have picked Ruby’s above the others. Congratulations and very proud Dmum moment for you.

Wow! Thanks so much all. Lovely kind words from all. I will have to watch the programme again when I can enjoy it a bit more! Ruby did really well though. Some of the cut was interesting. For example on the day, she hadn't actually started the face at all when the judges made their half-way comments!! They showed her painting a bit further on than I remember it being at that stage. Emily Atak also said such kind things to Ruby, much more than ended up in the cut. She couldn't stop looking at Ruby's painting!

She was fabulous and what amazing amazing work she did. She is astonishingly good.

Timeforabitofpeace · 29/10/2025 21:32

You must be very proud of her OP. Very well done Ruby.

Halsall · 29/10/2025 21:14

Just watched, @FriendlyLaundryMonster - Ruby’s portrait was amazing. Well done to her. She’s incredibly talented.

Choux · 29/10/2025 21:04

I hope Ruby had a wonderful day and got some good advice and feedback from the judges and other artists. And she will always know that Emily liked her painting enough to choose it to take home.

It should be a massive boost to her confidence that at 17 she can hold her own on a show of that stature. She definitely has what it takes to be a professional artist. In fact I am wondering now how much it costs to commission her to paint me!

Chickenhorse · 29/10/2025 20:59

She’s an incredible artist, you should be really proud.

TeenToTwenties · 29/10/2025 20:56

Choux · 29/10/2025 20:49

Go Ruby! I loved her portrait of Emily. I thought it was the most realistic and lifelike one. I so hope she gets through.

anytipswelcome · 29/10/2025 20:47

My god what a talent she is OP. I’ve just looked on her site and I can’t even explain why but ‘Just Sally’ made me well up. What a gift for capturing people’s spirits. Absolutely rooting for your girl.
