Why do Labour not get it?

It's being reported today that Labour want to stop using hotels and move migrants into barracks. Fine. But when quizzed on it Luke Pollard has suggested this will be more expensive, but the public want the hotels to close at all costs so it will be worth it.

This to me just seems like another step forward for Reform. The public who care about this, care about how much the government is spending on migrant housing. A new policy that costs more isn't going to go anyway towards solving this problem.

I don't know what the solution is, but spending more money getting mothballed barracks up to spec seems ludicrous.

"Asked about whether it would cost more to house migrants at military bases than in hotels, Mr Pollard insisted that 'the public want to see those hotels close'.

But he added: 'We're looking at what's possible and, in some cases, those bases may be a different cost to hotels, but I think we need to reflect the public mood on this asylum hotels need to close.'"

I have not been engaging with you by choice. I have no desire to feed your posts.

Would you please stop talking about me on this thread and on other threads as well?

Why don't you be honest and say you wouldn't want an unvetted, unknown 20 something man in your house? I bloody wouldn't.

It’s ok you don’t need a room silly. A sofa for you and a bed for an asylum seeker. Or you could pay for a new bed, put it up in your living room. Be careful though, you don’t want end up like the last guy who let an asylum seeker live in his house.

24karatPalamino · 29/10/2025 16:15

I’ve genuinely stopped caring. I am absolutely sick of this government and the last.

I no longer give two hoots about any asylum seekers, or immigrants. White; brown; male, female, coming from Africa or from the awful country of France. I really have no compassion left for anybody. I don’t actually blame the migrants for coming, I blame our successive governments and the left leaning public for this damn mess.

It’s an absolute piss take when taxes rise for the working population, to pay for people to come into the country and not work, or work in low paid jobs requiring taxpayer funded top-ups. Socialism at its bloody finest. And that’s before you actually start even considering the safety implications, of which there are far too many…yet people still protest that it would be worse to detain until we identify our visitors….because…well….we have to be nice.

I hold my hands up and acquiesce that you can be the morally superior one. I’m going to vote for whoever stops this madness and allows working people to keep their own money to spend on themselves. And who puts the safety of the British public first, even if that makes me the world’s most horrible person.

Ironically immigration was much, much lower before we left the EU.

I suspect some of the current EU members would have concerns about the opposite issue given the average Pole is not far from becoming wealthier than us.

Edited

Was t it the Polish president who said the reason they had such a low crime rate was the fact they had zero immigration? I’m not surprised the average Pole is far richer. They went elsewhere to work, sent all the money home and have built beautiful houses, maintained their country all the while preventing immigrants from coming in.

Also if we have no idea of the country of origin where are the planes taking them when they are deported.

I wondered that. Also, how do they know which interpreter to get if the asylum seeker won’t say where he is from?

Rock and a hard place then because without Brexit everyone given European citizenship would have free movement anyway. So we would be unable to stop anyone coming who holds that citizenship.

It's not that Labour "don't get it" - they don't want us to get it, so they like us to remain distracted by dealing with crime, overcrowding, avoiding at all costs being called racist etc.

It doesn't matter where the asylum seekers are held, the UK as a nation can't afford to house them full stop, if Liebour say we are in so much debt then they can stop paying £££ in contracts for non-essential services for non-residents.

Far too many people in precarious unaffordable rentals and using food banks. It is disgusting that billions are being made from asylum housing by just a handful of individuals.

It is also disgusting that the govt won't say how much has been paid back to the Treasury by the profiteers.

Honestly why do people keep saying that Labour are doing their best for ordinary people, when they aren't. I just don't understand.

DuncinToffee · 28/10/2025 21:49

Unrest could be stopped by not making asylum seekers scapegoats, changing the rhetoric around asylum seekers by both politicians and media.

Reform has nothing to offer other than being anti immigration. And they have no realistic policies on how to deal with the boat crossings.

Why don't you lobby the Government for crimes to be recorded by country of origin/time in this country/asylum status.

When you can show us with data how peaceful and law abiding these men are perhaps we can relax a little?

On channel 4 news tonight the migrants said they were desperate to return to the uk because Brexit meant Uk was the only country where they wouldn’t be forced to stay in the first place of possible refuge. Meaning that Brexit may have caused this huge rise in arrivals.

People are not falling for the sob stories any longer - the game is well and truly up.

Most people are totally pig sick of being taken advantage of and our safety concerns overlooked...we should be the priority and our safety concerns not accommodating all and sundry from third world countries.

Another country/offshore seems to be the best idea but when this was suggested before people objected to it and it was shelved.

I was against the Rwanda plan at the time (largely because of the cost), but I’m increasingly convinced something similar is the only way forward now.

We can make the accommodation as unattractive as we want, but people will continue getting small boats as long as there’s a strong chance they’ll get to stay in the UK.

On our local news tonight it was stated that they would be free to come and go.
Highland Council were not consulted about it at all but were told yesterday that it would be happening.

Another day of Labour another shitshow.

Do you work inside these hotels or are you falling for the propaganda?

The only propaganda I'm seeing is you trying to persuade people how awful these hotels are when we all know that they are perfectly ordinary hotels. Oh the terrible Travelodge and PremierInns that you are trying to tell us are so basic suit us perfectly fine when we are lucky enough to get a night away.

Hotels and barracks neither of these are particularly good options.

It has to be offshore processing, Rwanda as was or get a few big disused cruise ships and park them up in the middle of the North Sea, no one steps foot here until investigated and checked.

Something radical has now got to happen as it is beyond a joke how soft we are...there is no deterrent at the moment.

It has to be offshore straight away; you don't get in to the UK to be processed.

We have a housing crisis and an economic crisis we can't look after our own why add to it with unvetted unknowns - it beggars belief. It is NOT our duty to house, clothe, feed, and provide care to the world. We are a laughing stock.

It does beggar belief. How did we ever get here.

Winter2020 · 29/10/2025 14:59

CorneliaCupp · 28/10/2025 17:54

From what I can see, about half of people who claim asylum are granted it. For those who arrive by small boats, the rate is 66%.

Whether they are granted it or not the vast majority don't go anywhere else.

Why do Labour not get it?

Hotels aren’t great either. I’d go for the Aus option, Ik the public are not as keen on border control and it might take more time to get to same place but it works well and no one will vote it out.

We provided safe routes for those countries which is why families were able to come together. We haven’t done that for other nations, so refugees are forced to make a treacherous journey. Stands to reason they send the fittest members of their family first, those unable to make the full journey move to refugee camps in the next country, which is not a long term solution for any family.

Do you really think people who can pay people smugglers tens of thousands of pounds and are physically able to travel across continents (through lots of safe countries) should be prioritised?

No country can take an unlimited number of refugees, and in my view we should be focusing on those who are the most vulnerable.

Yesterday I wrote a supporting letter for a man who has become homeless following an assault by his landlord. Not a British national but moved here 10yrs ago and who has worked in the UK since arriving. His mental health has been affected and he has some disabilities yet the loa council do not deem him to be a priority. He is likely to become street homeless. Where is the fairness in that?

😥 That's awful, poor man

twinklystar23 · 29/10/2025 14:40

Zarai · 28/10/2025 13:31

But many homeless people suffer from mental health issues and have been failed by the nhs, they are disproportionately care leavers who have been failed by the care system, often suffering abuse in care. Also homelessness has risen because of the extortionate cost of housing and the shortage of social housing. You're average homeless person can't just pop off and get a nice job and afford a house, which is why they are homeless. There are so many people already in this country who are in desperate need, we should start helping them. Letting in a bunch of people who will need housing when we have a housing crisis doesn't seem to be a very good idea.

I don’t really get your stance either. 300 to 900 men in a town is problematic. Even the generally pro asylum system pp have said no thanks on this thread.

Winter2020 · 29/10/2025 14:33

CorneliaCupp · 28/10/2025 16:45

No idea.

There are 8 billion people in the world.
Around 70 million people in the UK.

If we accept a conservative 2 billion people live in unsafe/oppressive conditions and would be eligible for asylum that is 28 eligible people for every man, woman and child in the UK.

We are going to need more than a barracks or two. We are going to need the Government to comandeer every spare patch of land for marquees and pay 90% tax to provide them with porridge.
