Why do Labour not get it?

It's being reported today that Labour want to stop using hotels and move migrants into barracks. Fine. But when quizzed on it Luke Pollard has suggested this will be more expensive, but the public want the hotels to close at all costs so it will be worth it.

This to me just seems like another step forward for Reform. The public who care about this, care about how much the government is spending on migrant housing. A new policy that costs more isn't going to go anyway towards solving this problem.

I don't know what the solution is, but spending more money getting mothballed barracks up to spec seems ludicrous.

"Asked about whether it would cost more to house migrants at military bases than in hotels, Mr Pollard insisted that 'the public want to see those hotels close'.

But he added: 'We're looking at what's possible and, in some cases, those bases may be a different cost to hotels, but I think we need to reflect the public mood on this asylum hotels need to close.'"

Quite. The typical labour voter is very good at spending other peoples money. Maybe people who have a council house will an extra bedroom could use it to house an asylum seeker.

That would be a fantastic idea. Wouldn't it be good if it happened

Hmmm and what about those who threw their documents into the sea and those whose "personal details" are nothing but fiction.

Agree with this and the fact I don’t think these countries necessarily have a robust DBS type scheme.

The whole thing is a mess. I don’t want genuine asylum seekers turned away but such genuine ones are surely a small percentage of the people who are coming here. I am fed up that so much money is being spent. I am worried about the small number of asylum seekers who are committing horrific crimes and making our communities less safe. I’m worried where this is all going to end as it seems to be spiralling. Labour do need to get a grip on this urgently but then the Tories didn’t either.

Can anyone explain under what law they must be housed? Don't get me wrong - I have no problem with migrants being given accommodation. I do have a problem with that imperative not applying to people who are already here. That is what is working in Reform's favour - ex-servicemen sleeping rough, but get off a boat and straight into accommodation.

Can you imagine the uproar if hundreds/thousands of aslylum seekers were sleeping rough in your town centre? In your street? Would you be happy with that? Stepping over them to get in your front door?

If they have no support or food what do you think they will have to do to eat seeing as they can’t work and earn a wage? Crime would rocket.

If we could have a more efficient system without the human rights abuses and without leaving people in limbo for years on end then I'm in!

You can if you do what you said, you just need to deport people when they arrive as you proposed (and ignore international law).

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 28/10/2025 15:33

You?

Just me?

How would that work? My taxes go towards housing and feeding asylum seekers but yours don't?

Comefromaway · 28/10/2025 17:35

Do you work inside these hotels or are you falling for the propaganda?

Ablushingcrow · 28/10/2025 17:34

aslkdfjh · 28/10/2025 12:35

The hotels are not ‘cushy’ but currently the public appears to falling for the bullshit that asylum seekers are living it up in 4* hotels with all the trappings.

Edited

You are wrong. Ok some are not that nice, but most are decent lovely hotels. Certainly luxury to those of us that could never afford it. Why do you not believe this?

And there is the 'trappings'. They are fed, clothed, free dental care, free medical treatment and more. I'm not saying they shouldn't have those things, I'm just pointing out the 'trappings'.

OnlyOnAFriday · 28/10/2025 17:33

Talk about flip flopping. It was only a few months ago Labour intervened in an ex base near here and said migrants weren’t coming. This was after they’d spent money kitting it up. They’d even employed security guards and certainly advertised for staff to run it. But nobody ever came. It’s still empty and afaik up for sale. No idea if it will get commandeered again.

and the problem if any with it is that it’s out in the sticks. Was meant to house a couple of thousand men I think. Who are free to walk out the gates, there’s a few small villages in walking distance. What are people going to spend their days doing? Seems like an open prison in all but name!

@CorneliaCuppwhen you say you’d like o/s applications and you’d deport anyone who arrives outside that, that is closer to the Aus system than the one we have.

They do do o/s applications and deport people who arrive on the coast. You’re describing what they do.

Sounds like a good idea to me

DuncinToffee · 28/10/2025 17:26

The Cameron Barracks were used before to house fighting age men.

marshmallowmix · 28/10/2025 17:19

RaraRachael · 28/10/2025 17:06

Yep. Cameron Barracks in Inverness - right in the centre and close to schools.
Great idea.

Yep it’s horrifying.

The local MP seems furious at these plans. He has also spoken about how close the barracks are to housing and the centre etc. I'd be extremely worried if I lived nearby.

This!!!

Also, if they do have to spend money on the upkeep etc then they can house our own homeless, vulnerable citizens in the future!

That's a good idea but people will still moan. I wonder how concerned about the homeless all these people were before migrant ho(s)tels were brought to their attention.

TheNuthatch · 28/10/2025 17:02

CorneliaCupp · 28/10/2025 16:51

Less would come anyway, and the ones that did could be deported immediately.
If I had the answers to fixing our immigration system then I would be a very rich lady! My point is that:

  • Our immigration and asylum systems need reviewing and modernising
  • They should be based on humanity and care
  • Asylum seeker are not criminals and should not be treated as such

Thanks for answering.
I think some people have an issue with the sheer numbers and I'm not sure that processing abroad would reduce that. I think that we would see numbers rise, and the boats would still keep coming.

If your main concern is method of arrival, but you're not worried about the numbers, then I can see why you think as you do.

CorneliaCupp · 28/10/2025 17:01

EasternStandard · 28/10/2025 16:59

That’s ok. I feel similarly about people who defend and promote this chaotic and unsafe system. It’s madness to want to keep it.

Actually I’ll add it’s not even humane to want to keep it.

I agree. The current system needs a good review and modernization.

I'm a member of the public, and I care that tax payers money is going to private companies to house migrants. Until we can find a solution to the problem of having to house migrants, I'd greatly prefer to think they were being housed in state owned premises rather being used to launder government subsidy of privately owned hotel chains.

This!!!

There is a way, hopefully fewer voters will cling on to non viable solutions and at some point it will change.

If it eventually does emulate Aus it’ll not be voted out again.

Where did you get the idea that those hotels are 'cushy'?

There was a recent BBC podcast investigation that had special access and interviewed asylum hotel residents. I would say it was pretty cushy relative to the standard of living many UK residents have. Paid for taxis, rooms cleaned, all meals provided. It's not a conspiracy theory that asylum seekers in the UK are far better provided for than many

Edit - forgot to mention the priority access to NHS services also covered by the investigation

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 28/10/2025 16:54

SumUp · 28/10/2025 12:43

Absolutely

Me too.

I don’t know about ‘cushy’ but I know of at least two perfectly nice hotels locally which are now used for housing migrants.

CorneliaCupp · 28/10/2025 16:53

EasternStandard · 28/10/2025 16:53

You could only deport people who arrive by boat if you ignore the 1951 convention and laws around that, is that what you mean?

Nope. As I said, if I knew how to fix the asylum system I would be a very wealthy woman.
