Why do Labour not get it?

It's being reported today that Labour want to stop using hotels and move migrants into barracks. Fine. But when quizzed on it Luke Pollard has suggested this will be more expensive, but the public want the hotels to close at all costs so it will be worth it.

This to me just seems like another step forward for Reform. The public who care about this, care about how much the government is spending on migrant housing. A new policy that costs more isn't going to go anyway towards solving this problem.

I don't know what the solution is, but spending more money getting mothballed barracks up to spec seems ludicrous.

"Asked about whether it would cost more to house migrants at military bases than in hotels, Mr Pollard insisted that 'the public want to see those hotels close'.

But he added: 'We're looking at what's possible and, in some cases, those bases may be a different cost to hotels, but I think we need to reflect the public mood on this asylum hotels need to close.'"

It also doesn’t address the issue of 300 to 900 men and the risks associated with that. Who does feel ok with those facilities nearby?

Some must otherwise this thread would be in agreement.

RufustheFactuaIReindeer · 29/10/2025 08:56

I don’t see why it isn’t genuine

it must be incredibly boring having nothing to do and no money and no space to youself for 2/3 years

and i am happy to agree that some of the hotels are what i would consider nice (maybe not stripped of all its amenities and sharing rooms with strangers) but a lot are absolute shitholes

EasternStandard · 29/10/2025 08:55

The language slips from Gov level lines to basic phrasing. It’s an odd mix of emotion and interjection from someone political.

That is just hilarious! @DuncinToffee

Yeah right the concerned asylum seekers wrote that did they ….me thinks not!!

Put out by the Labour council …it’s so obvious! It has though given me a much needed laugh 😆.

I could knock something up like that in Word and say it’s asylum seekers writing it …utter tosh! Just more spin as people are sick to the back teeth of it.

One of those Pro Asylum groups/Labour council wrote that piece they are trying to defend the indefensible 😣.

Edited

Why would you assume that, and not that it is genuine?

So you think the letter is a lie?

I think it is politicised.

They're hardly going to be writing that they are living it up on Tripadvisor are they. Just like all the Brits who tell life on benefits playing on the xbox all day is oh so difficult.

Asylum seekers, housed in hotels in Manchester, are reaching out in their own words to address the concerns of the local community.

Thanks, but that article is about the terrible murder of Rhiannon Whyte. A totally different case to the one about the attack on the chef. chef. My question about "fleeing Gaddafi" has already been answered.

That article is interesting though, in that it cherry picks what Rhiannon's family said. It doesn't mention that they said

"Getting justice for Rhiannon is not the ending of her story, we will continue to advocate to evoke change in her name. Many have tried to imply this is about immigration, but these are the choices of one man, not an ethnic group."

I wonder why that was omitted?

Are we talking a nice area or really run down? I am in a very run area with lots of cultures. I have read of wealthy people saying how much they like the area but don't live there. I wonder why .🤷

Well, not the worst, but definitely economically underesourced. V multicultural.

Spot on. None of them would live in these areas.

I do

It’s incredible to see that people actually believe that the majority of the men coming over on boats are anything other than economic migrants.

The majority are granted asylum. So refugees, not economic migrants. And that's a fact, not an opinion.

NotEnoughKnittingTime · 29/10/2025 07:42

WildLimePoet · 28/10/2025 23:23

Ooohhh, really think you did something there.

Let’s see. Is diversity an issue.

How many ‘naice’, well healed people on this thread actually choose to live in the diverse areas. How many second and third gen educated children and grandchildren of migrants even choose to live in these diverse areas. Why do they choose to leave?

Which aspects of diversity do you advocate for? FGM? Forced marriages? Honour based violence?

Spot on. None of them would live in these areas.

RaraRachael · 28/10/2025 23:14

100%

Completely agree. If the UK wasn't seem as an incredibly generous place, they would stay in France (which is a really lovely country).

I think too many of those who advocate for letting the world and his wife in the UK are those who are self interested in keeping the benefits for all merry go round spinning.

EasternStandard · 29/10/2025 07:05

DuncinToffee · 28/10/2025 21:55

But do you agree the rhetoric around asylum seekers is problematic?

I find the lines from Mahmood ridiculous and without substance and Starmer’s lies pointless.

Labour aside I think it’s understandable people don’t want 300 or 900 bored men waiting in large, cramped accommodation nearby.

Would you want to be close by to barrack accommodation, and do you have any dds who would be nearby?

WildLimePoet · 29/10/2025 06:34

Livelovebehappy · 29/10/2025 00:03

That’s the point. There is no diversity because people who come to live here develop their own communities to exclude others. They have no interest in integrating. That’s not why they’re here. Do you think that that’s at the top of their priorities when they come here? That they want to mix and make friends with the lovely British people?

It also shows the far left’s true motives when pushed because they come out with statements like ‘is diversity an issue for you’.

They show their true thinking and intentions where they don’t believe that integration should happen. They are more than happy for practices and customs to thrive in this country which are harmful for to society. They pretend that the opposite side is the unreasonable one for advocating for integration.

It’s good that at least we know their motives.

I still maintain that they should use the old Pontins sites. A couple of days in those dumps and they'll be asking to pay their own way back to Albania!

I doubt they are safe for human habitation on any level, well over 10 years ago the ones at Southport were dripping with black mould and structurally unsafe. Not surprised they closed, very surprised they lasted as long as they did.

Have you not seen some of these prestigious buildings? And free if charge with mesks provided.
Sound cushy to me.

They may still look good from outside. The hotel companies strip out everything that differentiates a posh hotel from a warehouse, then migrants are put in there sharing rooms, often with complete strangers. There are few facilities, and those there are, are poorly maintained. Absolutely nonsense to call them prestigious.

SwingTheMonkey · 29/10/2025 00:49

It’s incredible to see that people actually believe that the majority of the men coming over on boats are anything other than economic migrants.

And their language tends to be indicative of the fact that they have no capacity to think for themselves. Basically regurgitating verbatim for what they have heard on the BBC and in the guardian.

I mean, who in real life, outside of the commentariat class uses language like ‘othering’, ‘demonizing’ etc during a perfectly normal and reasonable debate on whether immigration numbers are too high. Repeating the soundbites they hear seems to the extent of their critical thinking.

DdraigGoch · 29/10/2025 03:32

Whammyammy · 28/10/2025 12:33

I think labour actually "get it" with this. Moving migrants from cushy hotels to basic barracks will be a deterrent. Currently the temptation to cross the channel for free hotels and all that go with them won't be as attractive as old army barracks.
Bravo labour.
