Why do Labour not get it?

It's being reported today that Labour want to stop using hotels and move migrants into barracks. Fine. But when quizzed on it Luke Pollard has suggested this will be more expensive, but the public want the hotels to close at all costs so it will be worth it.

This to me just seems like another step forward for Reform. The public who care about this, care about how much the government is spending on migrant housing. A new policy that costs more isn't going to go anyway towards solving this problem.

I don't know what the solution is, but spending more money getting mothballed barracks up to spec seems ludicrous.

"Asked about whether it would cost more to house migrants at military bases than in hotels, Mr Pollard insisted that 'the public want to see those hotels close'.

But he added: 'We're looking at what's possible and, in some cases, those bases may be a different cost to hotels, but I think we need to reflect the public mood on this asylum hotels need to close.'"

Would you not agree that the opinion of someone who has worked with immigration lawyers holds more weight than someone who gets their information from the media?

You have no idea where I get my information from.

I wouldn't want to live near one of these barracks no, but not because it houses asylum seekers, because it houses men! Any large group of young men with nothing to do for extended periods of time would not make great neighbours.

Thanks for answering. No I wouldn’t either. I’m not surprised Labour is facing backlash on this.

No one will want this nearby.

No worries. I haven’t seen anyone put their hand up for barracks nearby, why is that I wonder

That’s the point. There is no diversity because people who come to live here develop their own communities to exclude others. They have no interest in integrating. That’s not why they’re here. Do you think that that’s at the top of their priorities when they come here? That they want to mix and make friends with the lovely British people?

This is nonsense.

JHound · 29/10/2025 10:16

WildLimePoet · 28/10/2025 23:23

Ooohhh, really think you did something there.

Let’s see. Is diversity an issue.

How many ‘naice’, well healed people on this thread actually choose to live in the diverse areas. How many second and third gen educated children and grandchildren of migrants even choose to live in these diverse areas. Why do they choose to leave?

Which aspects of diversity do you advocate for? FGM? Forced marriages? Honour based violence?

I was raised in diverse areas (low income ones to boot). I live in a diverse area. Almost all my friends and family live in diverse areas.

Most people I know seek out areas with a healthy ethnic mix and I know of people who feel safer in more ethnically diverse areas, people who want their kids to go to schools with a good mix of backgrounds (some have even posted to this board seeking that).

(I even know some people who are too scared to leave London because they are “scared” of a lack of diversity in the rest of the UK - I do think this is bonkers though).

It’s really a very very very tired trope that those who are not bothered by immigration or diverse communities have no experience of either.

How many second and third gen educated children and grandchildren of migrants even choose to live in these diverse areas. - If you knew any you would know - loads do.

As is often reiterated on this thread, we are all entitled to our own opinion.

I worked for an immigration law firm as a legal secretary during the early 2000s before moving away when I got married. They were anything but ‘parasites’, they worked very long hours and it was very stressful. (I actually loved it.)

You might not agree with what they’re doing but asylum seekers have the right to legal representation. Like criminals do, are criminal defence lawyers also ‘parasites’?

Letters aside I haven’t seen many posts saying they’d welcome barracks nearby.

Would pp on here want them in their town or area?

It is laughable, imagine if I owned a business and wrote myself a rave review on Google or TripAdvisor it is hardly reliable/unbiased.

They are marking their own homework putting that sob story out...it means nada!

It did start my day off with a laugh though reading it, so thanks to the poster for sharing 😂

This post just seems like a way of dismissing the letter to that you don't need to engage with it's content.
Have you ever met and had a conversation with an asylum seeker?

You are very welcome Flowers

Posters can make their own minds up about you and you reaction to the letters.

Likewise ! 🙂

All I can see is you is being obtuse and argumentative on repeat with various posters...it is pretty much rinse and repeat.

You then post an "article" but don't check the source of who wrote it....or don't disclose that it was written by immigration lawyers...hmmm.

Me too, I’m not sure GMIAU or whoever they are realised they had been unintentionally hilarious.

@CorneliaCupp It is a very well known fact I am quite surprised you are not aware?

A number of unscrupulous immigration lawyers are like parasites as they feed off the asylum system taking advantage of both the asylum seeker and the UK tax payer who pay their fees via legal aid.

Interesting though that the only thing you can point out from my post is calling out the lawyers not that the said "article" was written by those whose job it is is to at "aid immigration." But hey gloss over that part....🙄

Edited

I think the letter is genuine, I don't think that immigration lawyers are parasites.
Nothing in your post is fact, it's all opinion, which I disagree with.

@DuncinToffee

Well, well, well …a quick google and it is even more dubious as that has come from the GMIAU who are - surprise, surprise Immigration lawyers fighting the asylum seekers cases.

You simply could not make it up …of course they are going to put this nonsense out as it’s their bread and butter fighting immigration cases and are pro asylum seekers! That is their job so it’s a load of cobblers to put it politely, it’s those human rights lawyers that are parasites fighting deportations paid for by our legal aid system.

Even more hilarious 🤣 if it wasn’t so pathetic and obvious before I even googled who GMIAU are. They are there to aid immigration the clue is in their name…immigration aid unit.

No one is falling for it and most have had it and some!

Put out by the Labour council …it’s so obvious! It has though given me a much needed laugh.

Lord Hermer probably wrote it.

EasternStandard · 29/10/2025 09:00

I don’t see that it changes much either way. There is still risk, not everyone is writing letters.

RufustheFactuaIReindeer · 29/10/2025 08:58

And i would imagine they had a translator to help if they struggle with english, if someone told me what to say and i wrote it down for them it doesn’t mean its not their thoughts

the word ‘shit hole’ for example might not be appreciated in a letter 😀
