Why do Labour not get it?

It's being reported today that Labour want to stop using hotels and move migrants into barracks. Fine. But when quizzed on it Luke Pollard has suggested this will be more expensive, but the public want the hotels to close at all costs so it will be worth it.

This to me just seems like another step forward for Reform. The public who care about this, care about how much the government is spending on migrant housing. A new policy that costs more isn't going to go anyway towards solving this problem.

I don't know what the solution is, but spending more money getting mothballed barracks up to spec seems ludicrous.

"Asked about whether it would cost more to house migrants at military bases than in hotels, Mr Pollard insisted that 'the public want to see those hotels close'.

But he added: 'We're looking at what's possible and, in some cases, those bases may be a different cost to hotels, but I think we need to reflect the public mood on this asylum hotels need to close.'"

Asylum seekers, housed in hotels in Manchester, are reaching out in their own words to address the concerns of the local community.

That will have been written by an group that advocates for asylum seekers.

Genuine question, because it seems like a simple solution do there must be a reason why its not been done

I don’t think Labour has much desire to stop asylum seekers arriving. It’s not so much that they care about them, it’s more that they know Tory voters dislike unchecked waves of immigration and that’s enough.
My enemy’s enemy is my friend.

It’s quite reassuring that with another 4 years until a general election, people are speaking up more than ever. Voices are louder than ever. People are no longer silenced by ridiculous accusations of being racist.

Ah, i see, thank you. I wondered after i read about the recent stabbing in London, the man arrested was granted asylum after arriving on a lorry.

It’s not still the case. People are granted asylum.

It’s irrelevant. Just because we have our own horrible criminals doesn’t mean we should have to take in those from other countries as well. One murder or rape by a person who really shouldn’t be here, is one too many.

Agree with this.

That is the law currently. If you arrive by small boat your claim will not be granted.

How many other serious assaults or worse took place in the UK yesterday? And what is the nationality of all those involved in those crimes?

Im not questioning why people arrive on small boats, that and the reasons why, i understand. Its not a journey I would ever want to have to make.

It was a question as to why the current and previous governments, havent made it illegal for people to claim asylum who arrive via lorry or small boat a blanket ban on claiming asylum. Cant they give safe, reasonable legal ways to claim before arriving?

Reforms one trick pony is "stop the boats". A way to stop the boats, but give people safe and legal means for asylum.

The problem with this approach is that you would not be able to meet the demand. It’d cause such an increase in movement to wherever the claims are processed and you’d either need to accept very high numbers who meet the criteria, or you’d have to cap it.

If you do the latter under international law people could still arrive to be processed.

I live in London NOW. I am from the Midlands and studied up North.

To repeat what you said was nonsense as you spoke in absolutes. Just as you say my experience is not true for everybody, similarly your experience is not true for everybody.

Posts on here are obviously going to be coming from people with different experiences. All of which are valid, but I’m pointing out that in my experience, there is very little integration. Maybe some ‘forced’ integration where people from different racial backgrounds are placed in social housing together, but even then often cultural differences are too great for people to mix, whether they live next door to each other or not. It’s a lovely idea to think people are accepting of differences in the way we live and different religions/beliefs, but generally it just doesn’t work I’m afraid.

Because people are desperate? Not the calculated connaiving individuals Reform would have you believe? Because not everyone is educated to the point of understanding the finer points of the Law in a country they don’t live in? Because we have obligations under an international law towards refugees and asylum seekers?

No I didn't. I said that the opinion of someone who works with immigration lawyers holds more weight than that of someone who gets their information from the media. I didn't mention you, nor was I thinking of you.

No, it doesn’t hold more weight. It’s just another one-sided viewpoint.

I believe immigration lawyers work hard. They work hard to keep illegal migrants in the country, even after many failed asylum applications.

They work hard to be paid as much as possible by the British taxpayer.

I would really be interested in seeing how much they cared or how hard they would work, if the migrants had to pay for themselves and legal aid was unavailable. (Which I think it should be).

OctaveoOctober · 29/10/2025 11:26

He entered on a lorry and was granted asylukm in 2020 from Afghanistan.

MaturingCheeseball · 29/10/2025 11:25

There are some big problems with asylum and a huge one is some very biased panels and judges.

One barrister at a chambers representing asylum seekers was also the presiding judge on appeals. So quite neutral, then Hmm

Another judge ruled that family is not necessarily limited to blood relations in some cultures, thereby ruling that some bloke could bring over 20 friends and family.

Some extremely unpleasant individuals have been represented by Garden Court Chambers, who seem to relish keeping dangerous individuals in this country.

This is 100% not written by a charity. It is definitely not saying leftist do-gooder. This is certainly the words of all illegal migrants. I believe it completely.

Yes it is appalling it was a triple stabbing and the dog walker is dead...beyond horrific.

OctaveoOctober · 29/10/2025 11:15

If the majority are granted asylum we need to change the asslyum rules.

Surely as a nation we went to provide sanctuary for the truly vulnerable ?

I'm sorry but huge great strapping men fleeing war and leaving women and children are not my top priority .

We should be allowed to chose who we take and not have it foisted upon us.

Apologises if it's not true but apparently people are going back to Afghanistan for holidays.

In our country we don't understand many things; we have no idea how desperate many people are and the terrible restrictive regimes they lived under and we don't understand networks ,allegiances , culture , reference points that are a million light years away from our own that we can't assimilate or change.

nam3c4ang3 · 29/10/2025 11:12

I mean - it’s labour. I’m sure they’ll fuck it up somehow but don’t worry - we will pay for it with increase of tax - that is all Labour know how to do properly. Hooray! In the words of someone on Mumsnet who told me ‘give Labour a chance - they’ll change the UK’ - hopefully you still feel that way.

Yep I think you’re right there, Labour are processing asylum claims but other parts might be continuing.

If it wasn’t so pathetic and obvious before I even googled who GMIAU are. They are there to aid immigration the clue is in their name…immigration aid unit

I don't think you were supposed to look up who they actually are, @marshmallowmix (!!) but a tenner says they'll also be into providing crib sheets as to the best stories to tell

I didn't even get beyond the first page before the lies started: "No one would choose to leave their country – we have been forced to leave because of war or persecution. You should know that everyone who arrived in Britain to apply for asylum carries deep sadness inside and has been forced to risk their life"

"No one" and "everyone"? I don't think so ...

100%, I wasn't supposed to Google them and see who they are.

Crib sheets and sob stories at the ready you are correct, pull the other one people have had enough.

Same I didn't bother reading beyond the first page as it is so badly written 😆

The Illegal Migration Act changes the law so that those who arrive in the UK illegally will not be able to stay here and will instead be detained and then promptly removed, either to their home country or a safe third country.
