I went this week and was looking around at the likely demographic

OP posts:
opencecilgee · 26/10/2025 20:55

we dont have one nearby but always assumed they were lower working class

I don’t know, would you care about people describing the N*** at their local chicken shop?

I've no idea what you are trying to say but if you are suggesting the n word for black people well that's a racist slur. Chav isn't anything to do with race. Get off your high horse

Just the op who described the gaff as working class.

We went once. The chap ahead of us decided to try the gravies, all of them, by dipping in his finger and licking it. Frankly he had no class but put us off for life.

We had dry dinner and the tables were a bit a sticky. DH nearly had a melt down: queued, fingers in the gravy, sticky tables, rubbosh wine and beer.

@CremeBruhlee on nights like that, I buy steaks, a ready made salad bowl, pot of bearnaise sauce and shove in some oven chips or new potatoes. Cheaper and better.

Not a ‘massive’ Mumsnet salad ??

Lol. I mean OPs not wrong I guess but it’s a bit like saying I shop at Harrods food court and just noticed all the customers are middle class 😅.

Like no shit Sherlock. Not a dig at you OP btw but just made me smile. We can see this class division replicated at many different establishments. It’s not a new phenomena but I guess it might seem a bit strange to observe if you were initially oblivious to it.

Yes! But I’d add another couple of lines.

“Its a bit like saying I shop at Harrods food court
and just noticed all the customers are middle class”
AND I am middle class.
Im in an establishment where almost the entire demographic are very similar to me. Blimey what an observant person I am all of a sudden.

CurlewKate · 26/10/2025 20:23

I am not at all working class. I love a carvery. Toby or otherwise.

Bambamhoohoo · 26/10/2025 20:20

RubySquid · 26/10/2025 20:08

Lol do you think I actually care. It's an apt description of the people that frequent the Toby I speak of

Sparklesandspandexgallore · 26/10/2025 20:17

We sometimes go after visiting a certain place for Sunday lunch.
I think it’s quite good. Definitely not the best meal I’ve ever had but sufficient.
The one we use is in a nice area, and there are hardly any children there which suits us just fine.

No, it's bloody not. I'm working class and I wouldn't eat there if you paid me. Do you think that working class people have no standards?

JoanneTeresa · 26/10/2025 18:48

I love it VERY often ..

I eat there and use a voucher, so get it even cheaper😛

Uppitywoman · 26/10/2025 20:10

And…?

RubySquid · 26/10/2025 20:08

Arraminta · 26/10/2025 20:08

I would only eat there in extremis, the quality of the food is generally poor especially the meat. But I don't suppose the majority of people eating there realise and probably see it as a nice thing to do.

Hallywally · 26/10/2025 19:35

@BettyBobble If you’re gonna to label people at least do it correctly- it’s “echelon”. 🙄

I'd rather be comfortable and WC than an uptiight gobshite. We're so going for a Toby at weekend

Jk987 · 26/10/2025 20:01

Classes only exist in your mind. Love how people think they’re differentiating themselves by saying they’re middle class. Deluded!

It was a typo and obviously toungue in cheek. The OP is being ridiculous

BitOutOfPractice · 26/10/2025 18:49

I’m middle class. I love a gravy dinner at Toby. Where does that put me in your social hierarchy.

You’re probably not middle class! They will say !

Miserable1 · 26/10/2025 19:57

Funnily enough I'm going to Toby Carvery tomorrow. It's one of the few places halfway between my friend and I and I get 20% NHS discount. I really like it! The first time I went there I was shocked at how cheap it was. It is what it is, it's not quite the same standard as a fancy country pub (although some are questionable) but it's nice food at a reasonable price.
I will say that we always go to the same one near a services and it seems nice in there and always quite. I once visited one in my nearest town and it was horrendous. Busy, rude staff and a very different type of customer.

RubySquid · 26/10/2025 19:45

The one in the next town to me is Chav central.

ExitPursuedByABare · 26/10/2025 19:52

I’d rather eat my own feet.

Hedjwitch · 26/10/2025 19:52

Its bloody delicious.

ohyesido · 26/10/2025 19:51

Can’t get a table at my local one because it’s constantly rammed, this is despite terrible reviews

Vitriolinsanity · 26/10/2025 19:50

It has no class. But it’s very good.

Tomorrowtodaywhenever · 26/10/2025 19:49

Well yes, it is. But it's still good value for a family meal. We used to go quite a bit when the kids were smaller as it was easy, you don't have to dress up, they can eat or not eat what they want as it is a buffet and noone seems worried about perfect table manners/kids dropping a potato or gravy spills on the table
We have gone off it now though, I think one day we just stopped going.

Oh gosh. Wasn't my experience when I went. But I definitely would have called out that behaviour. I just remember loading my plate with potatoes and gravy and vegetables.
