Visitors turning up to stay has ruined my weekend

Relatives have turned up to stay unannounced from 60 miles away. I was looking forward to having a very chilled weekend watching what I wanted on tv and snacking with some lovely walks.

AIBU to think its rude to turn up unannounced?

Are you sure they didn’t arrange it with DH who forgot to tell you?

Otherwise YANBU. I think I would have given them a cup of tea then sent them on their way.

ThrushorSparrow · 25/10/2025 16:49

Not on. Even my mother, whose house is always spotless, would want to make some preparations for overnight guests.

LIZS · 25/10/2025 16:46

Do people really do this? Why? Tell them you have plans but they can come back tomorrow for a walk if they can find somewhere to stay.

GAJLY · 25/10/2025 16:44

60 miles journey and they didn't ask?! That's crazy! I think I'd make them sandwiches and a cup of tea but say that they can't stay over as you have plans tonight and tomorrow! Sign post them to a nice hotel. Who even does that?!!! What would they have done if you weren't in?!!!

I just want to be on my own.

Who are they? How old are they? Who on earth would do this? I can’t think of a single person in this day and age of texting who would do such a thing. It’s incredibly rude and entitled.

BitOutOfPractice · 25/10/2025 16:38

Bloody hell that’s not on! I’m not surprised you’re hacked off.

FreyjaOfTheNorth · 25/10/2025 16:38

Why did you let them in?

Catsknowbest · 25/10/2025 16:37

Teizzz · 25/10/2025 16:25

I just want to be on my own.

You need to tell them. Like, now.

oncemoreuntothebeachdearfriends · 25/10/2025 16:37

Don't waste your time moaning on here, you should just tell them they are very rude and must go away.

BruFord · 25/10/2025 16:37

ChewbaccasMrs · 25/10/2025 16:35

If you don't feel you can just tell them to leave tell them you've got a really horrible stomach bug so they can't stay.

@ChewbaccasMrs Tee hee, that would get most people out the door quickly!

Bathingforest · 25/10/2025 16:36

These things do not happen just like that. Say : we have not issue an invitation, please leave now and reconsider how you communicate with me for future times

ShesTheAlbatross · 25/10/2025 16:36

People turning up unannounced expecting to stay overnight would be sent packing by me. Who the actual fuck thinks that’s reasonable?

Catsknowbest · 25/10/2025 16:36

LightDrizzle · 25/10/2025 16:32

So they’ve literally tipped up with overnight bags? You could have had plans.

Have they done this before?

I'd have told them I had such 'exotic' and 'private' 😈 plans they'd be out of the door like a shot.....😎red faced

Breadcat24 · 25/10/2025 16:35

What a shame you are away for the weekend!

ChewbaccasMrs · 25/10/2025 16:35

If you don't feel you can just tell them to leave tell them you've got a really horrible stomach bug so they can't stay.

Catsknowbest · 25/10/2025 16:34

I don't do unannounced- and everyone who knows me knows it. This is rude, entitled and inconsiderate. They live an hour or so away...? I'd firmly say it is not convenient! They can return home.

KittyHigham · 25/10/2025 16:34

This is madness. Them for thinking this is ok and you for allowing it!

Liverpool52 · 25/10/2025 16:34

Well you can have your weekend - send them away. You aren't being rude, they are.

BruFord · 25/10/2025 16:33

60 miles? A cup of tea and a snack is all they need before they can drive home, that’s nothing.

I’m guessing that it’s your parents or a sibling? One of DH’s sisters has form for just announcing that she’s coming to stay. DH turned the tables on her earlier this year and said that he was staying with her for a night and she made a right fuss initially. It all worked out in the end but her reaction was funny. 😂

childofthe607080s · 25/10/2025 16:33

60 miles to stay unannounced ? Stupid

LightDrizzle · 25/10/2025 16:32

NotbloodyGivingupYet · 25/10/2025 16:31

So tell them you're off out tonight, so they'll have to leave at 6. Then start getting yourself changed and hand them their coats. Push them out the door if you have to.

Fake phone call to a friend, "yes sure I'll be round there soon".
Byeeee!
Shut the door behind them, switch the telly on.

waitamo · 25/10/2025 16:29

Depends on who it is and how you get along with them I'd say.

BIWI · 25/10/2025 16:28

Who is it though? That makes a huge amount of difference. If it was my parents, (sadly no longer with us), I would have been delighted.

Nestingbirds · 25/10/2025 16:27

Say no?
Use your words to say you are busy. An hour and a cup of tea and off they trot. They can’t just turn up uninvited! I am assuming they have form for this?
