Visitors turning up to stay has ruined my weekend

Relatives have turned up to stay unannounced from 60 miles away. I was looking forward to having a very chilled weekend watching what I wanted on tv and snacking with some lovely walks.

AIBU to think its rude to turn up unannounced?

What is the point in threads like these?

Of course, you re not being unreasonable, and why have you started it only to disappear?

Inbetweenie993 · 26/10/2025 19:09

INCREDIBLY RUDE! Doesnt matter who, or why no notice is really trampling on your boundaries and privacy. Havent read whole thread (which i plan to) but knee jerk reaction is... i really wouldnt put up with this. YANBU

GreenFingeredClara · 26/10/2025 19:05

What on earth?! What did they say when they turned up?! Hello, can we have a room for a couple of nights, and will you also provide meals?! What is their excuse/justification? I can hardly believe it! Sounds like the beginning of a farce, not real life.

Did it not occur to them that you might have other plans? Did it not occur to you to say 'what a lovely surprise - I wish I could spend longer with you but I have plans later today, do come back another time when we have agreed on the date ahead of time'. And 60 miles is nothing!

I would be HOPPING MAD. But then, I am a miserable antisocial so-and-so and value quiet time and especially like to make my own plans and not be bounced into things. Maybe some people would be pleased, but it does seem from the other posts that most people would, like me, think it an unspeakably rude imposition.

MyDeftDuck · 26/10/2025 18:58

Are they still there OP? Do come back and tell us how you managed.

AdoraBell · 26/10/2025 18:44

YANBU OP

TattyBluebell · 26/10/2025 18:40

YANBU!
I would be fuming!

CosyMintFish · 26/10/2025 18:37

Are you in the UK? I think it’s bad manners to turn up for a cup of tea unannounced let alone a weekend stay.

BellaTrixLeStrange1 · 26/10/2025 18:26

You are NOT being unreasonable!! I’d be furious if this happened to me!!

LouiseK93 · 26/10/2025 18:25

Ita one of my biggest peeves! YANBU

Lavenderblue11 · 26/10/2025 18:17

You are definitely not being unreasonable, I'd be really pissed off if someone turned up unannounced, it's so rude.

NoDought · 26/10/2025 18:13

It’s ridiculously rude, I don’t even like people turning up unannounced for an hour 😂. Is it too late to say you have plans?

Kirstk · 26/10/2025 18:08

FortnumsWeddingBreakfastTeaPlease · 25/10/2025 16:23

At 60 miles, they live around an hour away?

Why on earth do they need to stay over?

How'd you work that out? My parents live 10miles away and it takes 45-60mins depending on traffic...

oldmoaner · 26/10/2025 17:57

So they just expected you to have enough food to feed them, bed made up for them to sleep in and you to have no plans? Could have said sorry I've got a friend staying the weekend so I can't put you up.you should have asked me if it was ok. (Then I'd have gone upstairs messaged someone and said get here quick and say your staying the weekend, your not by the way, but I need a get out)Next time don't answer the door or phone if they ring to say we are at the door. I think it's very very rude.

newnamehereonceagain · 26/10/2025 17:55

Oh my goodness how amazing to see you. I’m actually just about to go out but could do a cup of coffee if you fancied that? Where are you off to next?

MomGran · 26/10/2025 17:39

I am so sorry this happened to you. I am betting it will never happen again!
People who are so brazen as to turn up uninvited and to stay deserve a short, sharp NO. "I have other plans made for this weekend and cannot accommodate you this time. Let me know the next time you are planning to visit, and I will see if I am around." They know you have a kind and caring nature and took full advantage of it. Shame on them.

thepariscrimefiles · 25/10/2025 20:56

Such hyperbole! No-one is bursting into tears of compassion for OP. Lots of people are agreeing that uninvited guests who turn up to stay with no warning are really annoying. OP hasn't actually said who these people are so they may not even be her parents. Shoehorning in some emotional blackmail about dead parents isn't necessary.

good to know you consider that expressing an alternative viewpoint on here "isn't necessary"

whydidtheygrowup · 26/10/2025 10:47

Why did you let them in?

Wot23 · 26/10/2025 10:45

Mewling · 25/10/2025 21:31

@Wot23OP hasn’t actually said it’s their parents? You don’t have to put your regret you didn’t treat your parents properly whilst they were alive onto someone else.

oh LOL, no OP simply stated relative, I asked whose side, a fact everyone who has taken offence at my post has ignored (and Op has not answered).
Love the fact you too are now stretching into pure speculation.

please confirm how times per week you saw your parents up to the day they died? In my case it was at least once per week so stick that in your pipe and smoke it.

I just want to be on my own.

Grow a pair and tell them that, then.

Who are they, anyway? Have they done this before? It’s not remotely normal to drive 60 miles to see someone without telling them, and even less normal to expect to stay for the whole weekend.

Whatifitallgoesright · 26/10/2025 01:53

They only live an hours drive away! Go home.

Friendlygingercat · 26/10/2025 01:33

I am one of those iconic Mumsnetters who does not answer the door unless expecting someone. I run a business so time is money to me. I look at the ring doorbell picture and if its someone I dont know or want to know I dont acknowledge them. It could be the king of England but if he has no appointment I dont want to know. I have a sternly worded notice to that effect. Its not my problem if people cant read English or follow simple instructions.

I have occasionally answered and told them Im on the on the app and am away in X. "What a pity you didnt bther to make arrangements." I dont drive so there is no car there to give me away if Im inside. I get a real sense of tee hee hee from doing that.

Bumcake · 26/10/2025 01:09

This didn’t happen. You're eight pages deep on a mad story with no explanation, don’t waste your breath.

CalmTheFuckDownMargaret · 26/10/2025 00:00

I’d be so pissed I’d tell them to go home. Or I’d tell them I had plans and go out for the entire day and night and not spend a second entertaining them or catering for them. It’s incomprehensible that anyone would think this is okay behaviour.

MsAmerica · 25/10/2025 23:57

Sure, it's rude. But I guess you caved? So they'll just do it again.

EdithBond · 25/10/2025 23:43

Why are they coming to stay? Can’t they visit another weekend?

Just say no, Zammo!
