To not want to send children to school when there’s a storm

Bestofbothworlds19 · 23/10/2025 07:52

It’s rotten today where we live. Throwing it down with rain all night and this morning, set to continue all day. Winds are strong too, I can see one of the trees along our road has lost one of its branches (not a small one either) which has snapped into the pavement and is partly in the road. I then worry about anything like that happening close to us when walking to school. Fairly certain my youngest won’t even be able to hold her own in this wind anyway lol. I’m not talking about a typical windy rainy autumn day here, it’s far worse than that where we are. Would you keep your children off or not? (Mine are primary school age but question applies for any age really)

Her kids did go to school - the OP updated to say this

BooBooDoodle · 25/10/2025 10:00

I live in Cumbria. Storm alert central, especially at this time of year. Big coat on and get the wellies out. Send your kids to school and crack on.

EleanorReally · 25/10/2025 09:04

is it a yellow or red warning?

Roobarbtwo · 25/10/2025 09:02

HoskinsChoice · 25/10/2025 09:00

Exactly, a very impressionable age. If the child is already being taught you can just not turn up for stuff and that a mild breeze is a great excuse to stay in bed, what chance does it have in real life?

Where did the OP say that the child would be staying in bed if they didn't go to school

The OPs child is 4 years old

They will also take this lazy attitude into their working life, every day will be a potential duvet day or a mental health day off

It's half term

Not everywhere, our children's half term is next week, other children have had two weeks, this and next.

OP I suffer from anxiety - ignore the rude posters they don't understand.

Hopefully this post has helped you realise your thoughts are on the extreme side, and you are able to recognise them as just thoughts, not realities.

I would send them to school, otherwise every stormy day they might be looking for a day off!

So you have PTSD, not anxiety.

I am not taking anything away from what you are suffering from

But every Tom Dick and Harry saying they have anxiety is taking away the seriousness of your condition.

I do suffer from anxiety. Which is mostly under control but was very bad in the aftermath of me being harassed - and I was put on anti anxiety medication. Anxiety can be crippling - I wouldn't wish it on anyone

UsernameMcUsername · 24/10/2025 09:13

Take them in. I grew up on the west coast of Ireland and we'd have missed a LOT of school if we'd taken that approach.

Storms have been named like this since at least the 1800's...

To some degree yes, for the really extreme ones

What has changed is the requirement to give a media friendly catchy name almost every half decent low pressure system...

As a result what used to be described as "an area of deep low pressure crossing the country" (which often meant a mass shrugging of shoulders) has become "storm Windy hits the UK"....(anxiety triggering for some).

Really? I have ptsd because I was relentlessly stalked for 15 months - death threats. Photos of my house and and my address plastered all over twitter. Doxxed hundreds of times. Packages sent to my home. Threats to maim and kill me. I lived in fear for years.

You don't have the first clue about people if you think "straight talking" cures anxiety

That's clear. Tone deaf isn't the word.

Catandmousemam · 23/10/2025 21:39

Unless a school decides to close due to the weather children should legally still go to school

Sorry, but no one has been rude or nasty!

Quite honestly maybe you wouldn't all suffer from bloody anxiety if you'd all had some bloody straight talking in the first place!

Some of these posts are just plain nasty. People calling the OP pathetic, lazy, it’s ridiculous etc clearly don’t suffer from anxiety.
Would you tell somebody with depression to just pull themselves together? No. And if you did, you’re a dick.
@Bestofbothworlds19has explained why she has anxiety and that she is working on it.
Ffs, some people are vile.

Oh my!!!!! Heard it all now, of course they should go to school, book yourself an appointment with your GP for help with your mental health.

Just going to say that for people suggesting the OP goes to a GP for mental health help. It can be very difficult to get support for anxiety (speaking from experience).

GPs do not get a lot of training on mental health - and even if someone is referred on to other services they can wait months or longer. I suffered from work related stress for a long time - I got given anti depressants, nothing else and when I had ptsd and I was really unwell - I was given medication and put on a waiting list for therapy - which took 8 months. Some people wait a lot longer. My GP at that time was very supportive but others weren't. For a long time I had to battle on on my own because my doctors basically didn't care - that's the reality for some people

CBT might help the OP - but that's her choice.

Yellow weather warnings are a nothing ..it's British weather.

PixieandMe · 23/10/2025 13:50

I think this might be one of the most ridiculous things I have ever read.

If the reason is anxiety, then I understand and would seek counselling or familiarisation with the facts on incidences of accidents caused by adverse weather. The news reports these stories because they are so rare. It might be beneficial to look at statistics.

WhatNoRaisins · 23/10/2025 13:41

I can see how all the weather warnings we get make some people anxious. For me it's more a let down when I get a thunderstorm warning and nothing actually happens.

Tretweet · 23/10/2025 13:22

Just wanted to say well done OP for checking on here and not letting your anxiety get the better of you. You sound like you’re a lovely Mum. Lack of sleep can send anyone’s head to weird places and if your childhood was having someone worry about your overly all the time it is a hard thing to fight against in your own parenting!
