To dislike being called "ladies"

It seems to happen on here more recently and there's something about it which just grates on me! It makes me want to swear and announce "I'm no lady,"
It also reminds me a bit of David Dickinson when he used to say "Ladies, may I call you girls" in that sickening sleazy way.
Much prefer just being called a woman.
Anyway fairly light-hearted just a late night ponder.

Hello there. Hi friends, folks, everyone. I loathe being called a lady.

Oblomov25 · 23/10/2025 18:31

I quite like ladies. Don't mind any of them actually.

OonaStubbs · 23/10/2025 17:57

I am going to start using "humans" - that cannot offend anyone surely?

@OonaStubbs my friend refers to everyone as Bean. She always has. She says that we're all "human beans". She might be onto something 🤔 not much to get offended over by Bean is there? Plus gender neutral as far as I'm aware!

@CurlewKate when I teach it’s female dominated (usually only women) so it’s never been an issue, I guess I might use Gents or possibly chaps, mixed group I might go for folks. 🤷🏻‍♀️

To me 'Hi there' sound quite rude, certainly not how I would be expect to be addressed as a customer.

Depends where you are. "Good evening" would suffice in a more formal situation. I don't need to be good eveninged in the pub.

spoonbillstretford · 23/10/2025 15:30

I'd rather girls than ladies. It's at least not a behavioural judgement.

MNLurker1345 · 23/10/2025 14:51

I love the term and do consider myself to be a “lady”, I say in my most highfaluting accent!

Hundslappadrifa · 23/10/2025 14:49

Why do people get so offended about shit like this these days? Haven’t you got anything better to worry about? 😂

TheoriginalMrsDarcy · 23/10/2025 14:22

We need to hold onto what ever womens rights we have left. If that involves being called a lady then so be it.

Missey85 · 23/10/2025 14:20

Is that all you've got to complain about today hey? 😂😂😂

OhDear111 · 23/10/2025 14:14

@Greysowhat No but so what! Ladies are still ladies so it’s a correct description. Maybe they should just be labeled as something else? It’s about time people stopped being offended so much. Who cares what the men’s game calls itself?

Of course there’s the phase “ladies and gentlemen”. I prefer it to “men and women” when being addressed by someone.

I hate it .
An example for me is the class WhatsApp group ( all on mute - then deleted .. but that’s a whole different thread) , whereby a person will ask a question and the response will be “‘thanks ladies”.
Fuck off.

I have really thought about it ( that’s how much it pisses me off ) and about what I would prefer the response to be and I’m a bit stumped - as ridiculous as it sounds .
‘ guys/ chicks / girlies ‘ Nope, not for me.

So fuck knows but yeah, agree with you wholeheartedly OP.

A plain old ‘hello’ or ‘thanks’ will do for me, nothing else needed really.

I personally don’t have a problem with ‘ladies’. Nothing wrong with being a female and ‘women’ sounds a bit more misogynistic to me. ‘Hello women, [come and do your women’s work, or do some thinking, for me]’. ‘Thanks, women [for performing your lowly duties]’. It’s those vibes IMO.

‘Guys’ I try and avoid as I know it pisses some ladies off.

‘People’ sounds like you’re pissed off at who you’re talking to.

‘Folks’ make me think ‘folx’ - way too woke. Trying too hard.

‘Girls’ again I avoid as it pisses some people off.

I’ll just stick to names or a plain greeting 😅

FanFckingTastic · 23/10/2025 13:25

Honestly, I could not care...As long as I'm not being spoken to a rude way then crack on!

Raspberrymoon49 · 23/10/2025 13:21

Hate it too, like something out of the Victorian age, makes me squirm

dontcomeatme · 23/10/2025 13:19

Greysowhat · 23/10/2025 13:10

Person offends nobody. Why would you be offended by being referred to as a person?

Sorry, I'm confused. If you are "clearly female" then why would someone not be able to tell what your gender is??

None of this makes sense.

@Greysowhat well person offends me so you just assumed it offended nobody which isn't very inclusive?

I said, using the word person implies to me that they couldn't determine the gender of someone so went with the safe option of "person". And the reason I personally would find that offensive is because I am clearly a female.

But we both have the right to an option, neither is right or wrong, everyone is an individual. However I feel like you just want to argue so I'll bid you good day, thanks for your opinions.

SweetnsourNZ · 23/10/2025 07:24

When I was young calling someone a woman was considered disrespectful. It implied she was too loose or common to be called a lady. That was in the 70s. Times change. I used to think girl was insulting but don't now. Female is probably the worst one now because that seems to be what the misogynists use a lot.

Interesting. At a girls' secondary in the mid eighties we were outraged at being addressed as ladies by a male teacher, and left him in no doubt that we considered it sexist.
Ithink the idea that women is somehow rude is deeply misogynistic.

Greysowhat · 23/10/2025 13:13

It isn't to do with one dislike trumping another. It is the support of stereotypical terms used to refer to women. And by women too! If people can't bring themselves to say woman then use person. But stop using the outdated ladies and the infantilising girls as terms for grown ass women.

I love girls, at 50 it makes me feel young and is most often used by women IME. Please don't tell me what I'm not allowed to like. Ladies is also the most polite way to referring to women IMO and not stereotypical - that's frankly ridiculous, stop policing other people's language, honestly why do you think you get to decide what is and isn't ok. I hate Ms because i think it's pretentious but I'm not going to tell other people they shouldn't like it or use it or that it's wrong.

Funnywonder · 23/10/2025 13:15

Becky028 · 23/10/2025 13:13

People hate 'ladies', people hate 'girls', people hate 'guys' - it's all ridiculous and petty IMO. As long as I'm not called 'cis' anything or a cervix haver then I don't care.

Couldn’t agree more!

@Greysowhat it wouldn't be rude if I was very androgynous, but I am clearly a female so it would bother me if someone "couldn't tell". I am a female so have no issue with lady or woman.
But disliking something / being offended is very individual. Some people don't like lady, some do. Some don't like "guys", some do. So no matter what term I use I'm offending somebody 🤷🏻‍♀️ so I don't think either or is ruder. Depends on the individual surely.

JoshLymanSwagger · 23/10/2025 13:09

At one point at work we got "Guys and Girls", "Folks" and "People".
What's wrong with "Colleagues" or "Co-workers" in that setting??

Anyway, I hate "Women". If you're going to split sexes, I'm Female.
I don't always look womanly or ladylike.😁

Oh, I forgot the low of "Chaps and Chapesses" 🤦🏻‍♀️ now that was bad.

helpfulperson · 23/10/2025 13:09

Greysowhat · 23/10/2025 11:21

How is it rude? Surely it's ruder to refer to women as ladies when a lot of us dislike it so much. And so what if someone can't tell your gender???
