Motherfucking fireworks

How is this allowed past 8pm, I don't understand.

Cat is terrified, kid took 2 hours to get to sleep only to be woken up 10 min ago by more frigging fireworks.

how on earth is this still allowed??

I hate this time of year.

It's f** triggering. These twats should go and help in Gaza, I'm sure they would not be firing frigging fireworks after that experience !!

thanks for listening :( :( :(

Some idiots were still letting them off at 2:30 this morning. No consideration for other people.

Pets improve your quality of life IF you like them, they can and do reduce the quality of life of other people, who might be scared and or irritated or inconvenienced by them.

Its not comparing a firework with an animal, obviously, it’s comparing the affect on others of them.

The point is that your opinion of a cat or a dog or a firework, isn’t any more flipping valid than anyone else’s - and I can’t believe, as a dog owner myself, that anyone can suggest that dogs do not bring a fuck-ton of negative consequences to society as a whole, far more than fireworks do.

I am actually terrified of dogs so they don’t bring any benefit to me personally at all, however, I would not even start comparing dog ownership to setting off fireworks left right and centre at any time of your choosing. It’s just anti social.

ThisGentleRaven · 21/10/2025 09:57

I do love fireworks but I agree, they should be reserved for specific and advertised public events, banned for all private sales.

It would be a fair compromise and everybody would be happier.

It's not difficult to implement either, if fireworks are banned, they can't be sold and it's easy to prosecute and stop those who would buy some on the black market. Why are we not doing that?

I love your user name and the song you’ve taken it from!

Thank you, it’s a great song! I heard it for the first time in a while the other day and remembered how much I loved it. 😊

But they are a living creature, they have a right to exist as much as humans. Fireworks….nope, completely different.

I can’t believe people compare having a cat or a dog with fireworks.
Having pets improves your quality of life (if you like pets). Fireworks are totally unnecessary to anyone’s quality of life.
I quite like the organised events, but apart from that they should be banned.

Fireworks and pets are equally 'unnecessary'. Fireworks and pets both bring joy. Fireworks and pets both cause injury.

Only very entitled people would think they had more right to be alive than an animal we share tge planet with. Humans domesticated some animals but it’s very shit to just think that a living creature doesn’t matter or only as much as an explosive.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 21/10/2025 09:36

It’s a hard one because I believe they’re a big part of the tradition for Diwali, as of course they are for bonfire night, which is in some ways as close as we come to a “national day” (no one ever celebrated St George when I was young - edit to this - I am Catholic before anyone says “oh it’s anti Catholic”)

On the other hand pets are terrified and even more importantly veterans who fought for this country can be profoundly affected by them, as can refugees from war torn countries.

I would propose no public sale of fireworks and only to be held on specified days. I know Diwali is several days, but I think it would be ok to specific one or two, and then one or two nights for bonfire night (maybe the 5th and the nearest Saturday).

There’s no need for an entire firework season from mid Oct to mid Nov.

New Year’s Eve doesn’t need fireworks in my book - that’s another newish thing anyway.

I think that’s a fair compromise.

I don’t agree with keeping them to very early evening - I think for Diwali there’s a significance to the time and also children are only very little for a brief time and occasionally we have to suck up a bit of noise.

Edit - btw I personally love fireworks.

Every flipping year, the same complaints.

”my dog/cat is terrified”

well you chose to have them - and I guarantee fireworks were a thing when you made that decision, so you decided to give a dog/cat a home in an environment where there would be potentially scary things happening multiple times a year. No one forced you to.

Also, there are thousands of ppl, adults and. children, who are terrified of dogs, and, unless they stay in their house, can’t avoid them 365 days a year.

“it stops my child from sleeping”
well can you honestly say your child has never disturbed someone else with crying, either thru the walls of your house, or in a shop/cafe? Plenty do, and again, you choose to have a child.

Im saying all this as someone who has a dog, who, while decidedly not happy, isn’t really terrified by fireworks, and a cat that definitely is, but that’s my job to manage, cos I chose to home them in a housing estate where fireworks were let off at times during the year.

My point is that none of us have an absolute right to never be inconvenienced by other people’s life choices, and our life choices aren’t magically better or more important that someone else’s, regardless of how trivial we think the are.

Cat having a right to roam, dog ownership, fireworks, and even having kids, can all potentially impact others negatively, yet are all legal, and all will be important to some, and an irritation to others.

Deal with your choices, live your life, and let others live theirs.

Well let's flip that around by saying that none of us have an absolute right to inconvenience others with our life choices....

I agree in part, but fireworks provide so many negatives and very few positives. They are something that is unnecessary, it’s silly to compare them to living, sentient creatures that we share the planet with. I know 3 people that have scars from fireworks, one severe facial scars. I don’t spend much time thinking about them, but when I do, it’s crazy to me that they’re not banned

  1. It's Diwali, so there's a clear reason for them and you know when they'll be and can plan accordingly.
  2. The biggest public celebration (Leicester) was cancelled due to safety fears. So people can't just go to public celebrations. There are also far fewer of them.
  3. Because Diwali is a new year celebration, they can go until 1 am, just like all new year celebrations in this country.

If we're going to get rid of one of the fireworks days, I vote for New Year which only recently acquired fireworks or Bonfire Night which celebrates a failed attempt to kill the king in 1604 and is therefore far less culturally significant.

How the fuck is a Hindu festival more culturally significant than a historical English event that goes back centuries in ENGLAND?!
The fact you'd cancel an English event to replace it with a foreign event in England says it all really....Ignorant and entitled.

I also hate fireworks. Always have. All that money going up in smoke. I also have cats and When it’s New Year’s Eve and fireworks night, I know the date so can plan for it and keep them in. With Dawali, it sees to go on for a week and it’s not just one date. So inconsiderate.

Everywhere I’ve lived in the UK, it’s not just one night for bonfire night or new year, it’s weeks either side. There are generally fireworks from October to January.

It is Diwali, the festival of light...mothefucker.

Yes, festival of light, not festival of bang bang bang. Lights couod be candles, silent fireworks etc. Or limited to certain times. Yes people can give their animals meds to cover an hour or 2's fireworks, but that wears off before it safe to be able to give again. When it 6 non stop hours of it like we had last night that's a bit excessive

Really? Is that where we are now?

RegulationHottie · 21/10/2025 08:53

agree with PP who said we've complained our way out of every bit of joy this country has.

all the posters whining about traumatising animals.. animals are traumatised every single day. They are killed for our food. They are killed by our cars on the road. They are taken away from their mothers so we can have said animals as pets. They go through so much in life for our 'benefit' that really a set of fireworks for a few weeks collectively over a year is the lesser of two evils.

sod your cat, I can't wait for the local display. Most children love them and only a very small amount of children are frightened of them. Again, the world shouldn't stop for the minority. Do you wish to ban driving so we don't end up with injured or killed animals? Do you eat meat?

get your kid some ear defenders and be done with it.

that being said I do think they should be kept to organised events at that.

lets all protest for the fireworks to be banned for the OPs flippin cat 👏🏼

I drive, eat meat and love fireworks.
but then again I'm not a misery and don't believe the world should stop due to my anxieties and contradictory theories.

viques · 21/10/2025 08:52

When I am finally acknowledged as the Supreme Ruler of the Known Universe ( not long now, not long) the first thing I will do is ban fireworks. They were going off until 1.30 around here, and not little pretty fizzy ones either, those huge banging ones that sound like a cannon. We even had someone with one or two of those ready loaded boxes letting them off literally in the middle of the street next to cars on Sunday, and they left all the rubbish behind afterwards.

Another few days of Divali, then a couple of bangs for Halloween, then a week of November 5 th. Then a break until Christmas and New Year. Grrr.

thecatneuterer · 21/10/2025 08:37

They were still going on at 2am round my way. I don't give a fuck about their religious celebrations - it doesn't give anyone carte blanche to be a twat to the neighbours.

Staringintothevoid616 · 20/10/2025 23:01

The only dates fireworks should be allowed is Nov 5 and the Saturdays either side.- organised events only. Or a well publicised public event eg a national celebration.

Fireworks are a huge thing in East Sussex, and have been for well over a hundred years. Even small villages have their own "bonfire society", and the various societies travel en masse to each other's "nights" from mid-September to late November.

There'd be riots if they tried to restrict it to Nov 5th. It's a significant aspect of local culture, involves thousands of people and raises money for charities.

People here often have professional standard fireworks for weddings, big birthdays and other celebrations because the local bonfire societies have pyrotechnicians who have the necessary skills to put on professional quality displays for a fraction of the cost of hiring a professional company. They even have them at wakes for people involved in bonfire.

Any firework haters would be well advised not to move to East Sussex.

ApplebyArrows · 21/10/2025 08:05

The problem is that it's not only particular days, it's those days plus a window of week or more on either side (not every day necessarily, but some random subset of them), and at unreasonable hours of the night, plus random ones going off in the daytime too.

And every immigrant community thinks they can do it for their celebrations, so round here you get them for 4th of July and Chinese New Year and Diwali and goodness knows what else.

I would be very much in favour of restricting it to licensed displays.
