To deeply dislike my grandmother (TW)

NC as I’ve discussed things about her before. There’ll also be various triggering topics below.

i somehow feel an immense guilt writing this. I do believe she’s severely mentally ill and she’s had a very tough life but more recently I just feel myself not being able to tolerate her and I feel I might lose it on her (by this I mean really kick off and give her a piece of my mind, nothing physical obviously)

if she wasn’t my grandmother I’d think she was a disgusting human being (and I do now but won’t admit it). She says a lot of the way she acts is through love for her family what she sees as protecting.

examples;

she is incredibly racist towards certain (but not all) ethnic groups. She ostracises ethnic neighbours, will set prompts to make sure she can get to the door to glare at them during the school run, intimidates and insults given any opportunity. She treats shop workers as lesser if they are of certain ethnic groups.

she’s cruel to animals, regularly kills cats and birds that go in her garden with poison, she shoots at birds with my uncles airsoft BB gun type thing. she’s picked up dog mess from outside her house and rubbed it in the owners face (who was picking it up, but in her eyes she shouldn’t be doing it at all). Pours bleach over cats etc.

she’s homophobic and we have multiple gay people within the family, actively dislikes their partners and coins them as not being good enough the lace XYZ relatives boot. Makes no issue in pointing out she’s disappointed in them for being “queer”.

shes sexist and believes women have a place and so do men. She’ll actively hurl abuse at little boys who play with “girls toys” or “squeal” when playing near her bungalow. She will tell their parents to make them behave like proper boys and they should be ashamed. She doesn’t necessarily believe in ALL women’s rights and raises an eyebrow if mothers within the family leave their kids with their dads for a night out for example.

she has (and claims she would continue to do so) physically abused kids in her care. If they’ve been mean to one of her GC for example, she would slap them or not give them snacks but give them to the DC. She would make them feel bullied and excluded. All of this would happen after being the sweet caring GM inviting her DC friends around for a play date. She says she wanted them to feel as hurt as they’d made her GC feel.

We live in london, she is constantly comparing how many white people she’s saw to XYZ nationality. she has never worked and really excessively rages about “hand outs” foreigners are getting.

she doesn’t speak to a large portion of the family and has plotted the most evil things against her brother (who’s DC weren’t biologically his unbeknownst to him and she revealed the secret) she’s had his house smashed up and has said horrific things about her infertile sister and slept with her husband.

she is overbearing and over opinionated (obviously). On a personal level she is unbelievably over dramatic and protective of family, always plotting some sort of revenge on anyone we’ve had a run in with. Overly complimenting us always as if we are gods gift to earth and won’t have it said otherwise. I get this can be general biased grandparents but it’s to another level. She’s generally extremely difficult to be around.

of course on a family level she has some positives and I do think she’s sort of a victim of her own upbringing and/or mentally ill. But I really find myself not being able to tolerate her nastiness and evilness and I find it exhausting calling it out every single time. That said, she’s pushing 80 and her health is declining. Would you cut her off? Would you put up and shut up? Would you feel guilty if something happened to your GM and you’d cut her off? I don’t know what I’m gaining from this I suppose I’m just venting but what a mess.

I’d just keep in touch by phone and letter. 👍

Why? She'd be dead to me.

NimbleDreamer · 20/10/2025 18:15

I can't believe what I've just read. This is one of the most upsetting posts I've read on MN.

You're absolutely crazy to continue to have contact with her and to let her see your kids. She belongs in prison or in a mental institution WTF.

longtompot · 20/10/2025 18:12

I'm actually gobsmacked!

Ok @Spokebefore what will happen if your children come out one day? Do you think she will still love them as she does now, or will she react how she has done to other gay people?

I would not speak to anyone who behaved in the way this woman is, and she needs to know she is being completely inappropriate and offensive in her behaviour.
If I knew someone was poisoning wildlife, including cats, then I would report them to the police.
Just say she is mentally ill, does that excuse her behaviour? Or should she be somewhere where she can't harm anyone?

MaurineWayBack · 20/10/2025 18:11

To quote my therapist, ‘if going NC was the right choice for you just agd one you wanted to embrace, you’d know it’

You clearky aren’t ready to cut her off.
But I feel you really need to put boubdaries in place. She is a nasty person, you know it. She is also not a good example for your dcs. Them seeing her behaving that badly (towards, NDN, staff is shops etc….) isn’t good either. ESPECIALLY if they also dint see anyone standing up to her (which I’m guessing is what happens too).

I would step back. You know she isn’t a nice person. She won’t change.
Go LC.
See her on your own if you want to but not with the dcs.
Do NOT leave the dcs unsurpervised with her. She is getting too old for that anyway.

Middlemarch123 · 20/10/2025 18:11

She’s evil. But why are you even starting a thread saying you “deeply dislike “ her? Of course you should hate her. My kids wouldn’t know of her, because I’d have wiped her out of my life years ago. What the hell were you thinking even having them breathing the same air as her?

crazeekat · 20/10/2025 18:09

The minute she killed an animal she would be absolutely cut off. Actually I would keep in with her, kiss her ass and hope u get a good cut of her inheritance and give it all to cat and bird charities for her evilness. And she is evil, there is no doubt. If no inheritance coming ur way to do charity trick then cut her right off dont tolerate her another second. Some pensioners are (as my husband calls his awfully similar stepmother) self entitled old c u next Tuesdays . Ur gran is also one of them. The world will be a safer and nicer place with her gone. Poor cats and birds.

Mealy82 · 20/10/2025 18:04

If you think she's severely mentally ill and she pours bleach over cats and has physically abused children, how do you know she won't do something extreme to your children? Why would you leave your children unsupervised with her?

ComfortFoodCafe · 20/10/2025 18:02

& now she deals weapons? Honestly op you have no idea how crazy this even sounds!
Your so used to the violence & drug dealing your behaving like its a day out at Ascot when you visit her! You need to go & speak to a therapist.
You need it.

Mealy82 · 20/10/2025 18:02

How many cats has she poured bleach over? Don't the cats get terrible burns and die slowly and painfully? Why did nobody do anything?

Some people are just evil. I don't have what sort of childhood someone has had...this woman was born this way - no-one could create this monster.

I agree some people are born like this...the amateur psychologist in me thinks those who are born that way but have decent childhoods are more likely to receive the socialisation which means they are able to hide this side of them and at least behave within the law. Those who are born bad and have awful childhoods go on to do terrible things. But this is my own armchair observations and thoughts

ttcat37 · 20/10/2025 17:59

Spokebefore · 20/10/2025 16:48

That doesn’t feel fair. I’m not as bad as her. I can tell her how disgusting it is and actively tell her to stop poisoning animals but not reporting her to the police does not mean I’m as bad.

Yes it does. All those cats that she regularly kill and tortures that you could have prevented. You’re complicit.

Dontcallmescarface · 20/10/2025 17:59

Why are you allowing your DC to be around that witch? Get a grip for their sake if not your own.

A lot of the crimes she’s committed are justified to her by her fierce protectiveness. Example killing the cats, DGC will step in their mess and it’ll harm them or they’ll be upset. therefore they must be taken out.

she’s dealt weapons in the past because my uncle “needed them or he wouldn’t be safe” that sort of thing.

This has to be a wind up

Murder only applies to human, if killing animals was murder we'd not be able to eat them would we.
When she kills a pet she is destroying another persons property.

No. I think they're trying to change the law so that stealing pets is not just treated as theft of property.

Whether we should kill animals to eat is complex and I think we probably shouldn't. However, deliberate cruelty to any animal is obviously very different to damaging someone's property and if you can't see that then you are slightly insane. Animal cruelty is psychopathic behaviour and it's one of the first things that would be asked when assessing someone for psychopathy.

bumwoes22 · 20/10/2025 17:53

I’m shocked that you allow your children around this woman to be honest. She sounds unhinged and dangerous. You are acknowledging she’s awful but also making excuses to continue seeing and not reporting her.

I would say calmly to her that you deplore her views and her behaviour is criminal and if she doesn’t change you and your dc will be having no further contact with her. I doubt after a lifetime of being so vile she will miraculously change her views and behaviour at this time of her life so be prepared to stick to your word.

My grandparents have some fairly un-PC views but there is only so much you can put down to ‘being from another time.’ Child abuse, killing animals and outright abuse to others is not ok in any generation.

Spokebefore · 20/10/2025 17:52

I won’t be engaging any further with people questioning the validity of what I’ve posted. I’m sure enough will have reported it that MNHQ have already seen it and know I’m not a troll.

chunkybear · 20/10/2025 17:50

I’d get her sectioned to be honest!

PoliteSquid · 20/10/2025 17:50

Spokebefore · 20/10/2025 17:36

My DC absolutely adore their nanna. She’s “fun nanna” who allows them to do whatever sort of thing. I don’t often leave them unsupervised (probably 3 times in their lives) and it’s only because evil as she is she’s fearlessly protective over GC (to their detriment actually).

there have definitely been a few “decks” to the poster that mentioned it but it’s usually her initiating the fight. People were scared of her. Probably not so much now in her older years. I feel in a very tough position. My DC are autistic and have already had a major loss last year and suffering for it. That’s probably the main thing stopping me from cutting her off completely to be honest.

I really hope you’ve made all this up. If it’s true, even one of the purely evil things she’s done, then I question your ability to keep your children safe.

Mealy82 · 20/10/2025 17:47

Finding this very hard to believe, sorry.

She tortures animals, rubs faeces in people's faces and abuses children. But other members of your family love her because she's fun?

If this is true, you need to go to the police.

AppleStrudel16 · 20/10/2025 17:46

Spokebefore · 20/10/2025 17:42

That’s fair, I guess it’s hard to articulate how I know they’re safe with her. But as I said they’re 7 & 10 and she’s had them about 3 times unsupervised

Your violent, racist, homophobic grandmother with suspected learning difficulty has been left alone with your children?!

PoliteSquid · 20/10/2025 17:44

Spokebefore · 20/10/2025 17:20

Out of curiosity, it’s been long suspected that she has learning difficulties. Would this in any way change some of the views here if it were proven to be the case? It wouldn’t for me personally but I’m interested to know

Nope. Learning difficulties don’t make people above the law.

This person is racist, sexist and homophobic… openly expressing those views is illegal.

She kills pets - destroying other people’s property, also illegal.

She rubbed dog shit in someone’s face - that’s assault.

People like her have no place in society and no place in a family. I can’t believe you let your children near her! Stop enabling it.

MistressoftheDarkSide · 20/10/2025 17:43

I honestly am having difficulty with what I'm reading here.

The personality type is similar to my SM, with whom I'm NC after 40 years as her frankly diabolical behaviour directly contributed to my Dad's death, not that I can prove it.

However, she has always stopped short of doing anything "serious" enough for the authorities to properly get involved as she has a long history of "mental health issues".

However, in this case, hate speech, cruelty to animals and assault via dog poo and child cruelty all are criminal offences, and should be pursued as such as she is clearly a danger to others and by extension herself. She's crossed so many lines that even if "she can't help it" for whatever reason, she needs to be protected from herself, and those she comes into contact with also need protecting.

OP I seriously urge you to get official involvement before someone dies, especially if it's true shes dealing her medication! That's a huge offences on its own.

They will never be safe with someone like that. Never.
