Why am I so stupid?? Mistake booking flights

MrsFinchleysFlan · 19/10/2025 21:22

I was booking Ryanair flights earlier to fly home for Christmas. I usually use the app, but I wanted to check I had the best price by putting the same flights into the Ryanair site in incognito mode. I did it quickly and put some random letters in for the names.

For some reason the baggage was cheaper, so I went ahead and booked the flights though the browser in incognito mode (after logging in to my account) after carefully checking I had the right dates.

BUT DID I CHANGE THE NAMES?? NO I DID NOT 😵😲😲

They apparently allow name changes for free up to 48 hours after booking, but only by 3 letters! So now they want £400 to change the names!

Their customer service opens tomorrow morning. What can I say to beg them just to make the changes for free??

And why was the baggage cheaper in incognito mode??

You could literally be in on fire at the boarding gate and they wouldn’t help you.

MrsFinchleysFlan · 19/10/2025 21:30

@Gonk123 4 names wrong 🤦‍♀️

@CloudSky I wanted to see if there would be a price difference! And there was!

I just don’t understand why you’d be surprised when you clearly suspected it was a possibility 🤣 irrelevant really, just struck me as odd lol

TeenLifeMum · 20/10/2025 20:52

Ryan air did change them for us but it was one flight. Friend booked it for our group and used the wrong surname for one friend (her upcoming married name but she was 2 months pregnant marriage). We only clocked it in the taxi so ran to the desk and begged. He initially said it’s a £60 charge but then did it for free. I think we looked that pathetic he was clearly feeling kind. So frustrating. But we all need some silly stories to tell the grandchildren.

pontivex · 20/10/2025 20:40

The thing is when only full service airlines were around there were complaints of how expensive they were. List the benefits of them; customer service, flexible ticketing policies, free seat assignments, manned check in, liberal luggage policies, included food and drink on the plane and there were cries of ‘I don’t need that so I don’t want to pay’.

We seem to forget that when booking low cost airlines. You are paying for the absolute base cost and anything additional you feel you want you pay for on top. That includes ticket flexibility and the org understanding that errors happen and willingness to fix . The cheapest price is the most restrictive terms and unfortunately you make your choice at the time.

Dontlletmedownbruce · 20/10/2025 19:39

Change your names to the names now booked and get a set of new passports and then redo the proceed after. You can be known as jdjs amsnnrk for the holiday.

Seriously though, it's horrible but it happens. We've all done something similar. I had to pay 100s to a mobile phone operator about 2 years ago because I had a low data limit I wasn't even aware of cos I don't use much, and one of my kids streamed something while the Wi-Fi was turned off. It really upset me. They didn't even notify me either just took the money from my account and I found out when I hadn't enough for something important, thankfully I had savings elsewhere but it was horrible. The worst feeling.

@MrsFinchleysFlan have you actually seen this rule in their terms and conditions?

I ask because I once accidentally bought extra luggage I didn't need and they wouldn't refund. I asked them to quote where this was written in their terms and conditions and they couldn't. So they refunded me. Worth a shot?

I bet they amended their T&Cs immediately after that, though!!

I'd guess they'd claim that they had potentially already turned away other people wanting to bring extra luggage, owing to weight considerations on the plane, hence you had to pay for reserving that capacity.

Just like if you booked a table in a restaurant and didn't turn up: you couldn't just say that you didn't order any food, so they lost nothing, if they had turned away other customers who could have used your table.

AppleStrudel16 · 20/10/2025 13:13

Do they really rinse them though?

they have low cost seats. I’m flying home from Milan with them for €94 - with a carry on bag. That same flight would’ve cost me £130 minimum with easyJet.

I'm not saying that there aren't bargains to be had if you know exactly what you're doing, stick rigidly to their rules and firmly avoid any of their additional income streams (some of which would normally be seen as quite basic and not luxuries at all).

In the same way as you can get a decent deal on cinema tickets and see a film for a reasonable outlay; but they obviously work on the basis of hoping to tempt customers (and pester power from kids, of course) with their horrendously overpriced munchies.

I made a mistake on Ryanair's website once. I put my details in instead of flying a decent airline. By decent I mean literally anyone else. Including Air North Korea.

AppleStrudel16 · 20/10/2025 15:16

That’s because they want you to do it right the first time

Yes, don't we all. Don't we all.

@ChillBarrog Will a name change involve anyone taking some time to do some work? I think it'll just be a case of updating the system. But even if an employee was required to do something, would it be £115 worth of work? Per person?

I fly with them because they are generally the cheapest and generally have the times that suit me the best. I appreciate their model means fees. It just seems unreasonably high for this.

That's how they work. When you follow all the rules, you get very cheap flights. When you don't, you get high charges. That are published and transparent.

It's annoying, it's expensive, I'd be pissed off too. But it's not unfair. It's not a con.

Ah, there's an extra fee if you want English!

😂👏🏻

notimagain · 20/10/2025 15:00

Probably not, but they don't have to justify the amount, that is almost arbitrary.

If they can clobber everyone (number unknown) who makes a mistake with a three figure fee it's more income for Ryanair and allows them to keep the basic ticket price down whilst still making a profit.

notatinydancer · 20/10/2025 14:53

Soupdragon3 · 19/10/2025 21:28

Cancel the flights and rebook

You lose the money on Ryanair if you cancel.

You pay peanuts you get monkeys

No, you pay peanuts you accept that they don't do things like name changes for free.

Ryanair are very very cheap. They are so cheap because they stick to their policies, that you sign up to when you use them, which they are very transparent about.

So sick of people using Ryanair and whining about it.

AutumnCosy2025 · 20/10/2025 14:06

Yellowe · 20/10/2025 09:13

That’s the deal, though. It’s cheap, and these days pretty reliable, but the pay-off is no customer service, no cancellation/rebooks, draconian luggage policies. D a no-frills experience.

Sorry, OP. Everyone’s done similar once in their lives.

Well I didn't say otherwise, but my point was it's completely irrelevant to say 'x airline did xyz' and expect that to translate to a crap airline such as Ryan air.

AutumnCosy2025 · 20/10/2025 14:02

MrsFinchleysFlan · 20/10/2025 09:13

@AutumnCosy2025 apparently "prices are dynamic" 🤔

Did they offer an explanation in English rather Wankspeak??

MrsFinchleysFlan · 20/10/2025 13:46

@AppleStrudel16 actually, they go down and up so every time I come to buy flights I get locked in a game of chicken with Ryanair to see if I've bought them at the right time. I check the cost, check the cost, decide to buy, then keep checking the cost to torture myself if I've bought them "too soon" 🙃

Well at least there's no deadline for changing names (up to 2 hours before the flight I think?) so I can sit it out and see if rebooking will end up cheaper than paying the name change fees 🫠

Tickets never go down in price. Only up

exactly - i am flying to Dublin for half term with my daughter and we got return flights for 85£ - hardly feel like im being rinsed! its an amazing price! We only need a small carry on each as we going to my mums and we leave stuff there so we dont usually need luggage when we visit!

@AppleStrudel16

Agreed.

According to their last financial report they made around £8 a head on an average passenger over the year, pretty much the norm across a lot of the industry these days...
