To think people are naive re cocaine

I see threads on here all the time where women find out their husband has been doing coke etc and are absolutely floored.
But it always amazes me how oblivious people are to how common it really is. I’m childfree and in my late 20s and i go on nights out almost every week so you get to know all of the other regulars in the bars. I do not know one person that I’ve met through going out that doesn’t do cocaine.

These people have professional jobs Monday - Friday. Some of them I know are teachers, nursery staff, work in the passport office. It is so common.

I also see a lot posters describing a change in behaviour and people suggest it could be drugs. But unless you’re doing things like heroin or spice, cocaine does not make you act in the ways people suggest.

Do people really not know how common casual use of cocaine is in this country?

Why do people do ketamine knowing the bladder damage risks? I assume with cocaine if you stop slowly slowly your body goes back to normal

If you stop instantly your body goes back to normal, as it does with ketamine if you’re not a regular user with either or an addict. They use ketamine regularly in hospital (particularly in paeds) and cocaine in dentistry so it’s not inherently dangerous, it’s the quantities and regularity they’re used that causes the issues, like alcohol, but alcohol is worse as it’s only medicated in a hospital setting if you’re an alcoholic.

Cocaine is often very normalised in certain social circles, but that doesn’t make it harmless. It’s extremely damaging to both physical and mental health, and the supply chain is riddled with exploitation and violence. I used to be around it often, and sometimes you need to remove yourself from those circles just to get a reality check. People who do it just make excuses.

You told us earlier didn’t you? Because they’re badly brought up?

dottiehens · 19/10/2025 17:51

Well if it is so common then only a few people left to be naive. Shame we are surrounded by losers then. I hope the twats doing it at nursery schools places get what they deserve.

Sorry should of been more clear she doesn’t know why she’s infertile but she’s late thirties so probably indirectly drugs because of the mindset that you should spend your youth drinking and drugging and anyone who doesn’t is a loser.

rounds of ivf on the nhs cost millions that’s fine just ironic after talking about me behind my back being a waste of tax money

yes I probably sound bitter. I’m not though just pointing out that not “everyone “ is a secret drug addict a lot of people have genuinely never even been interested in drugs

No, her infertility is not from drugs. That is not something you can measure.

and yes, you sound unbelievably bitter and unhappy.

My background is in health research and there is clear evidence that regular cocaine use is associated with increased aggression in men.

Can you point me to any studies showing this? It would be helpful for my job (most of the perpetrators I come across are using cocaine and it does seem linked to their perpetrating behaviour).

So you're the 'cool' neighbour who lets her DH & son do drugs at yours,,, well done.
🙄🙄🙄

What are you talking about? Point out where I've said this happens?

Ombof · 19/10/2025 17:43

So glad I don't voluntarily ingest harmful substances to feel high.

It is common in DP's social group, but not mine, because our social backgrounds are very different. He's a tradesman, I'm educated & my friends are mainly professionals. I've seen a clear social gradient to its use. Many of his friends use it and several have had their lives blown apart by it. The number of relationships destroyed after one partner gets into coke is notable. Amongst my friends, I know a few occasional users but none from the very ambitious / very successful group.

I think this is less class related more trade related. The building trade is, and has for a very, very long time been, swimming in illegal drugs.

I agree almost everyone I know uses cocaine to varying degrees. Some very occasionally once a year etc. Some habitual and have a problem (although not obvious to anyone ) and I have a very wide circle of different age groups, careers.

So many people coming out of the toilets together in bars holding the queue up . Very obviously sniffing

@JurassicPark4Eva what are the signs of a user to look out for pls? The only ones I know about are sniffing lots and chatting lots of shit fast.

You only sniff lots if you snort it. You can swallow it, rub it into your gums (if you’re not bothered about your dental health) and inject it if that way inclined. But yeah, talking fast, lots of energy , very focused and dilated pupils. But the full effects only lasts about 10- 20 minutes.

DEAROP · 19/10/2025 09:09

Not sure where you're going with this. Nobody is saying for you to think that is fine or healthy or whatever. But when you are totally oblivious to how common it really is, it shows you as out of touch and yes, naive. Like my neighbour who thinks that only the poor and the common take drugs.

So you're the 'cool' neighbour who lets her DH & son do drugs at yours,,, well done.

Huge pupils.

Croakymccroakyvoice · 19/10/2025 17:27

I know it is common. I see the affect it has on children in the school where I work. They get pulled into county lines, fry their brains to the point they can't do any work in lessons and generally have their lives destroyed.

Yay recreational drugs.

Ponoka7 · 19/10/2025 17:25

MinimumRage · 19/10/2025 15:25

Thanks for the whataboutery @Ponoka7 - all the things you raise are valid but not on topic.

And your example of healthcare workers being on drugs is spot on the reason why random testing should happen.

It’s slack standards to turn a blind eye to it - doesn’t matter if you’re a government, a company or an individual.

It isn't whataboutery. Companies cannot decide that some modern day slavery matters and others don't, especially when some of us are only in the UK, or rather our G/parents had to come here because of the poverty and modern day slavery inflicted on them, by England. Influcted poverty in Africa might be far removed from your life, but it isn't the case for all of us.

AutumnCosy2025 · 19/10/2025 17:24

JurassicPark4Eva · 19/10/2025 09:02

I don't give a fuck if it's common.

I think dramatically less of anyone who uses it, including my 21yo BIL and SIL who used it in my local pub when we took them out for a meal. They will never be invited again.

I have been in law enforcement for over 20years. The misery of drug dealing, county lines, associated sexual abuse and rapes, the extreme violence, the importation, the dumping of drugs into water courses, the impact on the countries of origin for the drugs..... And people are also only now hearing the risks of things like ketamine and the effects on your bladder, the use of extreme synthetic drugs like nitazenes which has an extraordinarily high risk of death - and you wouldn't have a clue what the substance actually is until your body reacts because you assume your nice drug dealer knows what it is (and most of the time they don't know what it is).

All so some twat can sniff an unidentified white powder up their nose on a Friday night in a quiet local pub because they think they are cool?

Nah, fuck off.

Are you still in law enforcement! (Police!?)

if you are how could your BIL & SIL justify putting you in that position? Even if you aren't, how could they justify it in YOUR local??

Did you say anything at the time??.

Only people on Mumsnet, most other people know at least one person that does it, I don’t btw, I find it too expensive!

Werp · 19/10/2025 17:22

You certainly are naive regarding cocaine OP. About 3% of people in the UK use it regularly. If you’re in your twenties or early thirties and many of your friends take drugs habitually then you are just waiting to see who matures out of it and who takes damage or dies. I’ve taken various drugs when younger, including cocaine, and I would be shocked and would almost certainly separate from my partner if he was regularly using cocaine now that we are older and have a family. I am not shocked to discover that various people I know have or haven’t tried various drugs. I would be shocked if any of my friends took it up again in their 40s (perhaps beyond a one off at a festival type scenario, which I would not think a good move but is still very different to the kind of situation people post about).

Doingtheboxerbeat · 19/10/2025 17:18

andweallsingalong · 19/10/2025 17:03

I think it's you who are naive to suggest cocaine doesn't link to problematic behaviour.

Much of the alcohol related DV / pub violence is linked to and in many cases exacerbated by cocaine taken with alcohol.

I'm not minimising any of what you say, but I think what others are saying is that there's a million miles of difference between the guy who's punching walls and nutting people in the pub versus the frazzled, slightly stressed head teacher who you just assumed had just had a row with their partner/teenage child/boss .

Some people have the kind of temperament where their poor behaviour/life choices doesn't affect a wider community just people in their personal lives.

Dappy777 · 19/10/2025 17:17

MrsAmaretto · 19/10/2025 09:59

Yes it’s very common across society but people don’t seem to be linking it to the increase in poor mental health. I just don’t get why it’s not being discussed.

I suspect you’re right to link them. I’m sure cannabis is just as bad - maybe worse. I have noticed a change in my mood when taking supplements from Holland and Barret. In fact, I have chucked several different supplements in the bin because they increased my anxiety or made my insomnia worse, so wtf does cocaine and skunk cannabis do?!

Catsandcwtches · 19/10/2025 17:16

JurassicPark4Eva · 19/10/2025 13:03

I've been in law enforcement careers for two decades. I know exactly how common it is.

I also see the users every week in the pubs, restaurants, the street and even during the day amongst my neighbours.

I'm not a bloody idiot and the signs of a user are very very obvious to anyone who understands what to look for.

No one is keeping me "in the dark", including my foolish 21yo BIL and SIL who think people don't know they are using when they nip to the loo at a family meal.

People don't discuss it with me because I have no desire to discuss Class A drugs use with anyone. I no longer have the power of arrest, but it doesn't change any of my personal morals or integrity. And I judge users very hard indeed.

@JurassicPark4Eva what are the signs of a user to look out for pls? The only ones I know about are sniffing lots and chatting lots of shit fast.
