To think people are naive re cocaine

I see threads on here all the time where women find out their husband has been doing coke etc and are absolutely floored.
But it always amazes me how oblivious people are to how common it really is. I’m childfree and in my late 20s and i go on nights out almost every week so you get to know all of the other regulars in the bars. I do not know one person that I’ve met through going out that doesn’t do cocaine.

These people have professional jobs Monday - Friday. Some of them I know are teachers, nursery staff, work in the passport office. It is so common.

I also see a lot posters describing a change in behaviour and people suggest it could be drugs. But unless you’re doing things like heroin or spice, cocaine does not make you act in the ways people suggest.

Do people really not know how common casual use of cocaine is in this country?

I think it must vary greatly between social circles. It certainly isn't used by anyone I socialize with. We drink and some smoke weed.

Your husband and you are happy to tolerate illegal drugs. Did he miss the AML and POC training?

Edited

Yes weed smoking is common in her social group. It doesn't mean she smokes it.

Peridoteage · 19/10/2025 12:49

It probably is quite common but is not among my friends

I think its a sign of the times.

Happy people don't need drugs to feel good. People turn to drugs when life isnt giving them what they need/want.

Digdongdoo · 19/10/2025 11:59

Um what? Part of what problem? We don't smoke weed, we know some people who do. And they grow it themselves FYI.

In fairness to @Ombof the regular drug users I know have had very difficult childhoods. I think the "right" vs "wrong" is too simplistic, but I don't know any drug users who've had a nice happy childhood. Including "recreational" users.

The vast majority of recreational drug users I know have had perfectly happy childhoods. Coke is a party drug

I think that’s a bit of an exaggeration. I wouldn’t laugh at a parent who didn’t know her kid takes coke. It’s not really funny.

A lot of people would if they're sat there Lording about how only the worst people.do it and it doesnt happen in their nice home. They'll be pissing themselves with both pity and amazement at their total ignorance.

They just won't tell you and you'll look like an idiot when people know your husband and sons' are in the toilets doing lines and you think they don't even drink. Everyone will be laughing at you.

Good. I am absolutely a "judgeypants" of people who cannot seem to even have a MEAL out without sniffing random crap up their noses.

People truly need to take a long hard look at themselves. Unfortunately it usually takes a death for reflection to happen in , however people will still say it'll never happen to them / that person wasn't careful enough / it was that person's comorbidities which caused it.

The total lack of personal responsibility by people who take "recreational" drugs is absolutely astonishing. It's always justifiable as "only a bit of fun", "I get anxious, this helps me have a night out", "it's no different to alcohol".

Missing the point again. The reason you are oblivious to how common it is is because the people around you who indulge know you are judgemental so don't tell you. It isn't that it isn't going on around you, it is just everybody keeps you in the dark because they know how you think and act.

I’d like to add:

If you haven’t been invited to the hen do / party / birthday meal, there’s a chance it’s because some of your mates want to enjoy their weekend without judgeypants around.

Call me 'judgypants' if you want. I was assaulted at work by people on cocaine on several occasions. I don't want to be around people who do it, that's my choice, and I've left jobs over it.

The point of my post was to highlight that the people doing it, and the places where they do, are often not young clubbers or seedy men in nightclubs and cocktail bars that a lot of people are (clearly, from this thread) picturing. It can and is regular people in village pubs, nandos and at dinners with friends.

When people use drugs and enter these places (that are not set up with bouncers and police nearby) they place other people in danger. If people want to pretend it's a harmless little boost, they can, but they're wrong.

Pregnancyquestion · 19/10/2025 12:43

I think it’s always been common, I remember being at a house party in my 20s and someone belligerently trying to get me to take coke after I told him i didn’t do drugs, until eventually I had to shove him away and another person intervened. People on coke are insufferable.

But I don’t think it’s as invisiable as you think. I think there are signs of a come down and people can get really sucked in by it all. A lot of the people that I know who have taken Coke have ended up with serious issues. One guy used to go on benders fri-sun, he’d spend mon- weds at work absolutely miserable on a come down until he got sacked and I know a couple who used to do it every weekend and they’d stay out all weekend partying and barely see their kids, one of them ended up moving on to smoking crack and they broke up. So I don’t think it’s naive to think that it’s a problem

While cocaine use is common, it’s extremely patronising to suggest that anyone who says people in their social circle doesn’t do coke is wrong or naive. There absolutely are plenty of people who don’t use coke. I don’t, none of my family does. I know people who do or who have done, but that doesn’t mean that because I say I know that the people I mix with don’t do it that I’m wrong.

It’s the same as the “all men watch porn” argument, all men absolutely “don’t” watch porn, even if many do.

Yes, I'm not naive enough to imagine that coke use isn't rife in many walks of life (including amongst some individuals I know), but I also think it takes a certain lack of knowledge of society to know that there are significant numbers of people who are cautious, prudent and reserved in their choices, regardless of their social circle.

They're not nuns who live in a cloister either - they drink, they party, they have fun. But the "just say no" message stuck with them, because that's the sort of personality they are.

DEAROP · 19/10/2025 12:40

EmeraldShamrock000 · 19/10/2025 12:26

Okay. Yet you are trying to educate people with your zero experience. 🫣

I don't need experience in taking cocaine to understand it. As I said, I come from a background of sellers, not takers. That's how I know a shitload of women spend lot of money on coke to give to people to be their friends and don't actually have that much of a coke habit at all. They're just lonely and nobody but the people who can use them want to be around them for whatever reason.

anniegun · 19/10/2025 12:40

About 1 in 60 according to some studies. That makes it reasonably common but not ubiquitous. I think the OP just moves in a social circle that finds drug use acceptable. I would not socialise with a Class A drug user

Bambamhoohoo · 19/10/2025 12:37

Ombof · 19/10/2025 12:35

I've taught my kids what's right and what's wrong. They've never done drugs and never will. I don't even drink myself.

You’re saying that like it means something. Don’t you expect them as adults to develop their own sense of right or wrong, and accept that might be different to yours? It’s either controlling or naive, and you don’t actually want to give it too much thought because then it might apply to you

Naive to the extreme. You really think they’re going to phone you up and tell you? Honestly, have a think.

TryingToBeHelpful267 · 19/10/2025 12:31

Yes it’s common but it’s obvious when people take it. All illicit drugs cause behavioural issues.

As does alcohol!

cakewitch · 19/10/2025 12:35

Horrible, horrible drug. Thankfully ive grown out of it now, but i had far too many indescribably bad comedowns, vile self loathing, and lost days because of it.

Ombof · 19/10/2025 12:35

Bambamhoohoo · 19/10/2025 12:31

This is a really very odd take. Do you think every decision taken even by someone well into adult hood comes back to “being brought up correctly”?
You must know all sorts of people has drugs and there is no commonality in the way their parents would like to believe they brought them up.

Applesonthelawn · 19/10/2025 12:34

It depends what social bubble you are moving in. I'm as sure as I can be that none of my colleagues or close friends take it, nor DH. You are moving in circles where it's common, but in other social circles, it isn't.

kkloo · 19/10/2025 12:31

Lighteningstrikes · 19/10/2025 12:27

You need to look at statistics to appreciate the very real problem there is in today’s society.

Yep I quoted the statistic in my previous comment.

Powder cocaine use has remained steady in the last year for people aged 16 to 59 years (2.1%) and 16 to 24 years (3.8%), compared with year end March 2023

So as I said, it's still very much the norm to not do coke, and if people know a large amount of people who do it then that's just the circle you're in, it doesn't represent the general population.

Bambamhoohoo · 19/10/2025 12:31

Ombof · 19/10/2025 12:28

It suggests me to they haven't been raised correctly. None of my kids have ever done drugs. DH and I have never touched it
