Viewer stole from my house?

Calcaata · 18/10/2025 20:29

I have a Diptique candle, 3 wick and cost £180. I’ve had two house viewings today, not done by myself but by the estate agent. I’ve come home and it’s missing.

Aibu to expect the estate agent to reimburse me?? I won’t be able to contact them now until Monday.

I've read some mind blowing threads on here before but this one truly has been a shocker. I can't believe some of the criticism aimed at someone spending their own money on something they like.

Poor OP for daring to spend £180 on a candle and having it stolen and then being slagged off for spending so much money on it.

It's her money, how she chooses to spend it is entirely up to her, the thread is about it being stolen by someone who came to her house not how appalling some of you think it is to admit to spending that amount of money on something so frivolous.🙄

It's the same scents. That's the entire point - so it's not about the quality of the scent. Or even the quantity, since the maximum fragrance load is 10% - anything above is illegal in every EU state and the UK. 😀

Not sure why it's hard to understand that people are happy to pay for the brand name, it's their money and clearly don't feel like a "mug" doing so.
If you're happy buying cheap candles, what is it to you that others want to spend more?

Someone might buy an apple from Selfridges instead of Sainsbury's, nothing wrong with it as long as they can afford to.

What makes you so unhappy about OP spending her own money to her choosing?

How better are they than, e.g. The White Company? I love scented candles.

I find the scent to be deeper / stays for longer even when the candle is not on.

Kuretake · 19/10/2025 15:12

Why do cheap ones smell worse then? Is it just a choice? Genuine question!

This. I've tried many brands of scented candles and my favourites are Jo Malone, Diptyque and White Company. I'm always buying cheaper ones in the hope of matching the quality but I'm always disappointed. DH bought one of the Aldi dupes today (he said it smelt nice and it was only £9) and guess what? There's barely any scent.

JediNinja · 19/10/2025 15:16

I bet it was the state agents, since (as others have said) that candle is heavy, not something you can fit in a pocket easily? About 4"-5" width/height? I would ask your neighbours, if they have ringbell cameras, if they can see anything.

It's ridiculous that some people cannot understand your spending choices. The logic is absurd. Would have people reacted the same way if they had stolen a Crème de la Mér moisturiser? Clinique bundle? A big bottle of Channel n5 perfume? A Kate Spade wallet? There are cheaper alternatives for all of those, even £5-£10 versions at Aldi. Some pople spend that much in a hairdresser appointment that you have to rebook 8 weeks later. A few drinks and a taxi on a night out. Why judging so much?! The candle will give a pleasant smell for months, both when lit and when uncovered, plus it functions as an ornament. Nice smells can create a comforting and welcoming ambient in a home.

They're literally not. See my posts above about where all these sellers source their 'materials' to make their candles. 😊

buffyreboot · 19/10/2025 15:11

I earn 28k and spend £60 on a candle. It’s a scent I love, made by a perfumer and it makes me so happy every time I light it. Only need burning for 30 mins and the whole house smells of it
scent is a huge thing for me whether it’s a cleaning product or perfume or candles. If I love it I’ll use it whether it’s a £3 bottle of method floor cleaner or a £60 candle

Some of the responses on here are absolutely insane.

The OP has had something stolen from her home because the estate agent didn't supervise visitors adequately but apparently its her fault for spending her money as she pleases and being happy just burning a match for 3 seconds 1 every 6th full moon.

I hope you get a resolution from the estate agent and can replace your lovely candle at no cost to yourself.

Now, I must go donate everything I own to charity because I recently decided to treat myself to some lovely Jo Malone hand wash so clearly need to observe some kind of penance for spending my money in a way that makes me happy.

Differentforgirls · 19/10/2025 15:05

SushiForMe · 19/10/2025 10:13

As a PP pointed out, lots of people wouldn’t think anything about spending this amount on a night out so not sure why spending it on a candle is different.
Diptyque candles are lovely, way nicer than other brands even the « fancy » ones.

Who gives a flying fuck how much a candle costs. If Op wants to spend her cash on candles that’s up to her.
Sone of the spitefullness and jealousy on this thread is horrible.
I gave heard that Diptyque candles are amazing though. I would love one.
Theft is theft and this needs to be reported to the Estate Agents and the police. The Estate Agents should have names of all the viewers (unless they were sneaky and gave false names).

Well yes, exactly.
I wouldn't spend that on a candle but I'm not OP. It's her money.
Regardless of that, something has been stolen, and therefore should be chased up appropriately.

Nope, the difference is the quantities and quality of scents used, which you should know.

Surely you’re allowed to be shocked, though.

I learn new things every day from MN. I just couldn’t get past the candle to the main issue!

I mean - would you actually light this thing? 😄 It’s an education for me!

You would be better just apologising for being so judgemental instead of doubling down and taking the thread off topic.

It literally is from the same wholesaler. I would know, I sell soaps. I buy the same materials, from the same wholesaler, as White Company.
Most of them buy their scents from Candle Shack, or Supplies for Candles. Who also do products for Soaps that I make.
Don't believe me? Look at the CLP label on the candle, it will contain the exact same ingredients and information as the Etsy Seller, or Pintail Candles, or Next, or Boots. Why? Because the fragrance oil used all originates from the same place 😊
So, you are completely, irrefutably, 100% wrong.

^ Just copied what I put above. Given I am in the business, so to speak, I imagine I know a bit more than you.

FWIW, I could afford to spend £180 on a candle. I just don't, because I'm not a mug.😂

😂😂😂

TheHillIsMine · 19/10/2025 14:51

It's so disappointing, as well as pathetic, to have all the comments about spending so much on a candle, buy a cheaper one so it won't matter, plus did you spend so much? as if the poster can't read, etc. Awful and missing the point. Not bright either.

@Calcaata I hope it turns out to be a mistake and it was just moved but if not, go to town with the estate agent.

Years ago, I remember house hunting with my parents (not in UK) and the gardener telling us to help ourselves from the fruit trees, even giving us a carrier bag. I was then even more gobsmacked when the estate agent opened the fridge and passed out bottles of beer.

Oh my Lord!

When my parents had viewings they had someone steal an avocado out of their fruit bowl.

Serves them right really with their middle class aspirations and spending their own money on an avocado when they should have been satisfied with a mangy apple when others can't afford avocados. That's why this country is going to the dogs.

ETA- true, They did have an avocado stolen.

I thought I was being so with my £3.99 candle from TKMAXX, until someone mentioned a £2 candle from Tescos!

There are no 3 wick candles for these prices. Not in Tesco, neither in TKmaxx

The focus on the candle cost is so stupid. I have never had a candle close to this price range but I can understand the appeal. A diptique candle looks nice in itself so it’s a beautiful ornament. I imagine it will give many hours of pleasure by burning a nice scent chosen by the OP.

Many things cost money that I would not pay for. I don’t drink alcohol. I see cocktails costing over £10 each, and it seems so expensive to me. But people enjoy them and that’s fine. A few nights out could easily cost £180 if somebody is drinking. I bet the OP gets more hours of pleasure from the candle.

People are so silly by getting so worked up about the cost of a candle. This thread is about the theft of an object of whatever cost from somebody’s house. Yet bitter and jealous people are getting oh so exercised about the cost of the candle. It’s pathetic. And boring.

I don't think it's jealousy tbh. It's just people with no filters and a judgemental attitude to how other people spend their money. It's HER money!
