Viewer stole from my house?

I have a Diptique candle, 3 wick and cost £180. I’ve had two house viewings today, not done by myself but by the estate agent. I’ve come home and it’s missing.

Aibu to expect the estate agent to reimburse me?? I won’t be able to contact them now until Monday.

@WigglywagglyWanda I was gripped with that one, also. I wonder if candle thief will take a picture with it?

Witsendneedhelp · 19/10/2025 21:31

I’d say some of the people criticising you for your candle are the very ones that wouldn’t think twice about spending £180 on a ‘haul’ of cheap sweat shop made tat from primark/shein that will sit unworn in the back of their wardrobe before eventually ending up in landfill. The candle is £180 and burns for up to 180 hours, so £1 per hour for something that brings you joy. We’re here for a good time, not a long time. There is an insatiable appetite for fast fashion and plastic crap at the moment, I think it would be a good thing if consumer trends shifted towards buying less but rather buying good quality, special items. Glad you’ve found a little luxury that brings you happiness and hope you get a new one when this is sorted out!

Does it actually burn for 180 hours? Am I the only one wanting to now buy one of these candles😁

No fair enough

I was really responding to a pp who said that her higher tax bracket DD had gasped at the very thought of spending that much on a candle. The judgement pissed me off so I made a stupid point

As a total spendthrift myself, I think people should spend the money they earn on whatever the hell they want and it’s really no one’s business.

I agree with you entirely.
I missed the memo where we're meant to be doing a straw poll of the views of our family members but I'm seeing my auntie and uncle tomorrow night so will ask them. Hopefully they won't gasp too hard as one of them is asthmatic .

My life's so boring that the case of the candle thief has me gripped.

Im almost as gripped as the designer glasses theif a few months ago.

She got em back, for the record.

Op do update us

WigglywagglyWanda · 19/10/2025 22:52

idri · 19/10/2025 22:48

I would ring the estate agents tomorrow and go from there. Can you update us tomorrow please!

Everyone is going mad about the price of the candle but I actually want to know how they deal with this sort of thing!

Yeh that was my point too

Until all the stealth posts about how they COULD buy an expensive candle but goodness how twee.

i really couldn't give two fucks about the price of candles. I would like to know if the CF is apprehended, though.

Differentforgirls · 19/10/2025 22:50

Thankfully, I have never, and will never, sell a house. I have bought one, and that has been it for me. I love my house. Good luck OP.

I buy £300 perfume. I earn minimum wage. I use it very very sparingly and buy other things very very cheaply.

Do you really have nothing more interesting to discuss with your daughter? I’m sorry I actually laughed at the “she gasped” - she must be easily shocked.

Diptyque as a company make a reasonable profit each year. Can’t imagine that’s based on the one candle I bought this year.

I dread to tell you what I recently spent on a lamp, you’d probably speed dial your daughter to tell her and then you’ll likely both get a touch of the vapours and so I couldn’t possibly subject you both to that.

We once spent £650 pp on a MEAL. Yes food that I would eventually flush down the loo.

Worlds gone mad 😂

I am not going to bash the OP for spending £180 on a candle, as it's up to her what she spends her money on. But let's not pretend that 'most people will cough up £180 for a candle if they have a decent amount of surplus income.' Most people would not. There was a thread on here the other day about the £200 beef wellington from M & S, and people were talking about it like it was just normal and regular for people to spend this on a beef wellington, and how 'it's only £33 per person, per portion.' 🙄

DH and I are solvent, no mortgage, upper working class, well-educated, live in a rural middle class village, both reasonable earners, plenty of savings, and decent pensions, and no way would we spend this kind of money on a candle, or a beef wellington! We can afford it but we wouldn't spend it. We'd spend on tangible things that will grow in value yes, but a candle and a beef wellington for £180 to £200? Just no.

My 2 DC (aged 30-ish) are high earners (high income tax bracket, 6 figures,) and have decent savings, and surplus income, and they would never spend this kind of money on a candle either. I told the one about this earlier, and she gasped, and said 'like hell would I spend that on a candle!' So it's a myth that anyone who can afford it would buy it.

As I said, the OP shouldn't be mocked and derided, but let's not kid ourselves that it's normal to spend £180 on a candle, because it's really not. The majority of people wouldn't spend this on a candle ... Even people who have a good amount of surplus income.

It amazes me how people on mumsnet are still amazed that people are different😂.

i fully accept that someone will value ca candle that much. I don’t - but clearly there is a market for them.

i spent £600 on a cat tree! Worth every penny to me but most people would be horrified and think I am mad! That’s okay. Niche product, niche market. But clearly people out there buy them.

I am sure we all have things that others wouldn’t dream of spending the money on.

My neighbor pays a company to come out every week and valet his car. It must be the platinum plus service - it takes four hours - every week! Would I spend that sort of money every week to get a car washed and Hoovered. Not on your Nelly. But best of luck to him!

Agreed. Im agog reading this thread, dont know why im surprised but bloody nora theres some strange posts!

The thread is literally about something being stolen and what the next step should be. Instead we've got fecking pages of faffle about how much money should be spent on what.

Folk are different, their priorities and likes are different. My sister buys a tenner bottle of perfume and mine is 100, she earns twice what I do.

On the other hand her car cost a squillion squid where my little tootler probably a tenth of hers.

The point being bloody hell can't folk just answer the question and help the OP without all the useless debate about a candle? My mum has a valuable watch, if it gets stolen lets tell her she should use a timex🤪

Op its a difficult one, Id be inclined to email the estate agent saying you want to hear what they are going to do about it. If one of the buyers did it its a bit of a mess as how can the estate agent approach both asking questions, accusations really?

But then they should have been paying attention so its on them to try to rectify it. I think they should offer to take 180 off your bill , as I can't see a neat ending to it. Horrid for you.

But I don't think anyone, and especially not the OP has said it's normal to spend so much money on a candle or that anyone who could afford to do so would (I could afford it, but I wouldn't do it. Although I may well start doing the same as you, @Differentforgirls and squishing the remnants of my burnt down scented candles together because I love the thought of the multi scent it would emit).

If the OP had come on and sneered at people for not stumping up a vast amount of money on a candle then they may have been fair game for a pile on, but they didn't and many of the responses they've got have been unfair and unnecessary.

This. Just all of it. The idea that you can either work out what someone seems based on one purchase or determine that some things are worthy of money and other things aren't because that's what you think therefore that's what it is is laughable.

DancingNotDrowning · 19/10/2025 22:07

People (usually the ones with more money than sense) would leave all sorts of shit lying around on the side - cash, jewellery, expensive make-up - that could be very easily misplaced

im putting my house on the market next year and this thread has been enlightening. It hadn’t occurred to me to pack away anything let alone make up etc, but truthfully I probably have a couple of thousand ££ worth of make up and perfume on my dressing table.

Insane to think of someone viewing the house and pocketing my stuff.

Or people with friends or employers in that super wealthy bracket.

I have a very wealthy aunt. She will buy strange but very expensive ‘tokens’.
