Viewer stole from my house?

Calcaata · 18/10/2025 20:29

I have a Diptique candle, 3 wick and cost £180. I’ve had two house viewings today, not done by myself but by the estate agent. I’ve come home and it’s missing.

Aibu to expect the estate agent to reimburse me?? I won’t be able to contact them now until Monday.

I thought something similar - report it to the police and get a crime number, and then tell the EA there’s been a theft during one of the viewings and ask could they contact the people who viewed to ask if they know anything about it. Hopefully that would prompt an anonymous return at some point, but without camera footage from a ring doorbell or something it’s going to be difficult to prove, but I wondered if the candle is on any of the brochure photos.

Yes, this. 👏

Which bit?😂

My first reaction was nearly £200 for a chuffing candle! Shock But then again, me, and DH have spent money in the past on our hobbies and collectibles. Multiple 100s (and even the low 4 figures) on some things in the past, and people would be shocked if they knew what we'd spent. Difference is that they won't melt away or be eaten (like a meal out or a candle,) and they have grown in value. But people are allowed to spend their money on whatever they wish, so in that respect you can buy whatever you want @Calcaata and don't have to explain yourself. Smile

Re; the candle theft. You could report to the police as it is theft, but contact the estate agent first and tell them to tell the people to return it. However, I'm not sure you can prove anything. Unless you have a photograph of the candle in your house, and the receipt.

Actually, as a few people have said, it may have been the estate agent who took it!!!

You know you can get the same scents, same size from small businesses that are a fraction of the cost? Their £58 log fire candle I got from an Etsy Seller for £12 plus postage. Ditto their Pine Tree and their Pomador?

All these candlemakers buy their scents from the same 2 wholesalers 😂

You're literally paying for some snazzy labelling. I'd be mortified if I paid £180 for a candle just because it's got a particular label. 😂

Edit: Just to say, the point is good luck getting anything back for something that has an actual retail value of £18 quid...not £180 😂

Edited

Keep telling yourself that.

I can't believe how much this thread has derailed because of jealousy on what OP spends on her candle. Welcome to Mumsnet I guess!

Sadly quite common on here.
On the tip of my head a few come to mind and always end the same way:

OP with the expensive pen,

The one with the expensive crockery set,

OP's husband who spent >£800 on guests,

The OP who wanted to spend £1600 on a bed and the competitiveness went down to £25.

I love seeing how pther people spend their money.
A previous thread got me into buying the best cutlery set we could afford and using it for everyday instead of keeping for when guests visit.
As long as people can afford it, it's no one else's issue.

Blimey !!!!

Did you report them.

What happened to them
?

She’d obviously had her eye on them because she came prepared with a large empty carrier bag, which she filled. My DH sent the camera footage to the EA and asked if they would knock the price of the peaches off our bill !! We got a crawling apology and were assigned another member of staff. Never actually found out what happened to her, but I can’t fathom anyone doing this because there are cameras everywhere these days.

Or the EA was the thief
( see above post )

Could be. Interesting!!
At the moment nobody knows so maybe Op needs to check any ring doorbells and then report to the Manager of the EA, not the person who did the viewings and let them know they are going to report this to the police.

myrtleWilson · 19/10/2025 13:02

Who gives a flying fuck how much a candle costs. If Op wants to spend her cash on candles that’s up to her.
Sone of the spitefullness and jealousy on this thread is horrible.
I gave heard that Diptyque candles are amazing though. I would love one.
Theft is theft and this needs to be reported to the Estate Agents and the police. The Estate Agents should have names of all the viewers (unless they were sneaky and gave false names).

This is what makes me think it was more likely to be the EA themselves. The Diptyque candles are quite big and bulky - especially the three wick ones, and they’re usually in glass or pottery containers, so heavy. Unless the viewers had a big shopping type bag with them it would have been impossible to hide - whereas the EA would stay behind after they’d gone, to lock up. This is how we caught our EA on CCTV, stealing peaches from the tree in our back garden before she left !!

I’d also advise to all sellers. Never leave small objects on shelves that can be easily popped into a pocket

Something akin to themselves by the sounds of it !!

I was viewing a house once when I opened a kitchen cupboard at random and found a gun in it.

Was this in the US?

I can’t afford to burn it? Sorry do you have access to my bank accounts. It has been used,/burnt on multiple occasions.

But there we go with the snarky comments because someone took it personally that a stranger spent their disposal income on a candle. I honestly couldn’t live such a draining life where something like this would ever bother me.

With a massive class-based chip on her shoulder. Impressive she managed to type ;-)

DancingNotDrowning · 19/10/2025 12:33

The person the OP aspires to be wouldn't have mentioned the price at all, let alone on mumsnet, and that person would find the loss of 180 quid a very minor inconvenience

this is a weird take.

the price is relevant because value is inherently relevant to how we perceive theft.

if the OP had said she’d had an item worth £150 stolen this thread would have been detailed by people asking what it was and how big/small/easy to lose/conceal it might be.

if you weren’t so chippy @asmallbluething then you’d appreciate that, but you’re too hung up on attempting to call OP out for her “wannabe ways”

I wish I could day drink, but unfortunately I had to stop that because it didn’t sit well with the chemotherapy I’ve been having for the last five months. They are the only drugs I do these days, and the cancer that will eventually kill me is the only source of my mental health challenges. There now. Feel better ?

Why can’t she light it? And how do you know she can’t afford it. You are really reaching. You can reuse a bag or a car etc but the more you do the more it devalues so same situation imo.
