Bloody jellycat teabag

AIBU to be completely done with the Jellycat teabag madness? Honestly, who knew a small stuffed teabag could cause such chaos. The minute they come out, they’re gone – poof – straight into the hands of people who don’t even like them, just want to flog them on Vinted for triple the price.

I wouldn’t even care normally, but my daughter has been utterly brainwashed by this Jellycat cult and now apparently her collection will be incomplete without a pretend teabag. Meanwhile, I’m sat ringing around and scanning social media like a mug while Janice from Kent is selling 5 of them for 65 quid a pop.

And don’t even get me started on the Aldi wooden toys. Blink and you’ve missed them – unless, of course, you want to buy them off someone online who’s decided they’re now luxury limited editions.

Can we not just let kids have toys without turning it into a side hustle? It’s a cuddly teabag, not gold bullion.

Also for judging the ethics of a company like this... What is that company doing when a product sells out?

If that company increases the amount, and make sure there is more for their next product = ethical

If the company keeps the volume low, actually reducing even more restricted items as their popularity grows = exploiting the fear of missing out and being left behind in mostly younger people.

These images sum up why I love Jellys. Some may call me sad, but they make me smile so much, especially when my life is chaotic and full of turmoil.

So would you happily bu knock off designs?

I've seen plenty that are 99% identical. They would do everything that your pictures say. Same weight, same feel, same eyes, same cute designs etc.

Equally most cuddly toys would do all of the things you mentioned, because none of that is exclusive to jellycat toys.

The branding, quality through pricing, and fake scarcity strategies are though...

NJLX2021 · 19/10/2025 02:59

I seem to be in the vast majority.. but for me it's time to teach your daughter not to be suckered into trends, and fooled by scarcity. Teach her now, and hopefully she won't be pray for them for the rest of her life.

Jelly cat is awful though. Pure greed. I walk through our local shops cuddly toy section and there are all different brands, all different brands. Jelly cat is 4x the price of anything else, and 10x harder to find. Even compared to other high quality well made toys. Why? Because they know that people will see scarcity and price and equate it with desire and value.

14 is old enough for this to be a great critical thinking moment, of questioning why she wants it so much, and what it will actually add to her life. Also she should be old enough to accept that something is sold out, and to be able to understand that paying scalpers is not a great ethical decision.

(Awaiting the replies that this is joyless and heartless etc... you can have a lot of joy and fun, not at the call of a company that is exploiting teenagers fear of being left out, and scalpers looking to profit off desperate parents )

Great. Now I want one! 😆

Imagine your joy in life is provided by a major retailer that deliberately restricts their toys to generate demand?

Seriously, please look at your life if this is the the case.

Collecting lovely things is fine. But the above is just a bit sad

As we said…lots of things can provide joy. Please stop judging!

Like when people collected erasers or my little pony or sylvanian families or a million other things? Collections have always been a thing

See above. Nothing to do with an issue with collecting.

XenoBitch · 19/10/2025 01:47

Some people enjoy collecting things. We all differ in what brings us joy.

Collecting is fine. Hankering for something being artificially held back to generate a panic is just sad

Crazes are one thing. Artificially designed rarities are another

That’s so sad. Life is for experiences and people and living. Not for collecting material goods

You can get joy from so many different things! No need to feel sad for me :)

No. No it’s not. Life is not for feeling ecstatic because of something a company is selling you

You are missing out!

IridiumSky · 19/10/2025 01:37

Never heard of it/them.
Sounds like some stupid marketing gimmick. Tell your daughter that’s what it is and that only idiots fall for such nonsense.
This is called education.

buffyreboot · 19/10/2025 01:08

Surely it’s the same as anything from years ago? Everyone wanted a mr frosty or that Cadbury thing that dispensed mini chocolate etc, there were crazes for putting things on your bike spokes, pots, tamagotchi

jellycat is just the new version, I don’t think children (or teenagers) need teaching a lesson about it!

Have you never been obsessed with a product range just because it’s beautiful/ sentimental/ you just love it? It’s so much fun…the anticipation, finally getting it, displaying it. Life is for shit like this!

No. No it’s not. Life is not for feeling ecstatic because of something a company is selling you

thisisthebiscuit · 19/10/2025 01:18

Salemsplot · 19/10/2025 00:29

I’m not doing that. If anything I’m pissing on reseller’s chips. I love cuddly toys, I love hobbies and passions. I don’t love companies restricting product to make a trend and making people panic that they can’t get said product.

But that’s always been the way of it, I remember the Thunderbirds/Strawberry Shortcake/Teletubbies hype, parents driving halfway across the country on Christmas week to toy shops out in the sticks!

DrowningInSyrup · 19/10/2025 01:12

At least they look nice. Labubu's are tiny, look cheap and seem to retail for about £50. Do they actually do anything other than sit there looking crap?

I want a Jellycat toilet roll 🥹... and I am 61!

Littlemisscapable · 19/10/2025 01:07

What's with all the misery on here ? It's a teenage collectable thing, they love them. It's cute. Let's just find OP the teabag and stop making people justify what they spend their money on..honestly. good luck op ! There must be one somewhere?!?

XenoBitch · 19/10/2025 00:58

JudgeJ · 19/10/2025 00:42

Surely if parents weren't feeding this fad by ringing round etc. it would die a death quickly.

One of the Jellycat toys I have seen is a golf ball. £20 or so for a little plush golf ball.
I can't say I know any children that are into golf.
I know adults who love Jellycat toys and buy them for themselves.

XenoBitch · 19/10/2025 00:57

They are just a new version of Beanie Babies. People went mad over them too.
In a few years, it will be something else.

SALaw · 19/10/2025 00:50

Teasforfears · 18/10/2025 18:54

Lol, why didn’t I think of this.

“Im sorry you have bought into the hype that a global conglomerate has whipped up but it’s time to grow up and not want things because a lady on mumsnet blamed me for enabling your interests”

😆

Isn’t that a message that can be reasonably delivered to a 14 year old though?!
