What’s your prediction of the next cause the ‘activists’ are going to move into, after Gaza?

Seems like they’re getting bored of Palestine now that it’s a bit awkward talking about Hamas killing Palestinians in the streets.

so what do we think the next big cause is that they’re going to move onto? Do we think they'll finally bother to start talking about the awful crisis in Sudan? Or is there a trendier topic emerging?

We've seen the protests and moral panics come and go over the last few years - Brexit, Covid, BLM, climate change, Ukraine, trans and Israel. In some cases they arguments were absurd, in others the cause might have had virtue but the far left did it no good by making the loudest noise from the most insane base.

I wonder if the next big thing will be something quite different: It'll be demands that anyone richer than them (ie £10 million to billionaires) pay much higher rates of taxation to fund them not working and taking medication for their mental health issues (particularly ADHD). The left openly despises the working class and poor now, but they need to have a reason to tax the rich heavily, and that could well be it.

After all, everything wrong in the world is down to people with more wealth than you and mental health

It's odd to call all those causes moral panics., especually wars and climate change.

Most involve huge suffering and genuinely severe problems,,even if extremists have hijacked them.

Trans is a hard one as trans people do suffer a lot of genuine issues but otoh it's very hard when all the lobby groups are pushing to destroy women's safety and privacy and for hormones & surgeries for teens.

I didn't see much extremism in the Ukraine protests. That seems an odd one out.

There's also valid reasons to support a wealth tax apart from laziness & feigned illness. Fwiw, Reform voters seen to support one as a group, not exactly the demographic you mean! 🤣

68k dead including 18k children. Largest number of child amputees in the world. Aid agencies thwarted at every opportunity. Silencing of journalists. But yeah, thankfully, nothing really terrible happened there and anyone who objected was just trying to be trendy.

Yes.

The banning of journalists is one of the serious issues I DO have with Israel. I fully support their right to exist, but nit all of Likud's tactics

I agree with your comments about protesting for digital I’D. The OP asked what the next cause would be. Not what we thought the next cause should be.

The pro hamas protests were mostly attended by those who go with the latest fashion rather than deeper beliefs. We can all agree that a ceasefire is a good thing,

I think pro digital ID and support for net zero will be the next fashionable causes.

I do think some protestors for Palestine Action were there on principle that it's a bad organisation but that the banning could stand an anti democratic slippery slope.

But probably a minority.

Carla786 · 18/11/2025 19:52

OonaStubbs · 21/10/2025 00:05

They'll keep banging on about Gaza as the ceasefire won't last for too long. Hamas will break it, Israel will retaliate and we'll get all the wailing and gnashing of teeth at those horrible Je... ahem, "Israelis" once again.

It's possible to condone retaliation from Israel but still believe some of their tactics have been immoral. Are Jewish critics (eg in Haaretz) all anti Semitic? Of course self hating Jews exist.

Carla786 · 18/11/2025 19:50

Whammyyammy · 20/10/2025 18:54

Totally agree. The hair dye brigade used to march round Bath on a Saturday morning, chanting about rivers to sea and beating a drum, whilst expecting people to get out of their way.
Achieved absolutely nothing towards peace.

Edited

Why do people say protestors should protest Nigerian or Sudanese atrocities, then? The RSF or Islamists certainly won't listen.

You know the answer. Sensible protestors aim to pressure the UK government (an Israeli ally) and raise awareness of charity initiatives.

I accept the people you describe though are probably just woke idiots.

TessSaysYes · 18/11/2025 19:48

This is the kind of post coming out of a military silos in Israel, people working 9-5 dropping posts into social media.
I think most people/the public are upset by, or object to genocide, right? Activism is a lawful and useful facet of a healthy democracy. Would you rather live in Putin's Russia?

Carla786 · 18/11/2025 19:46

AnyoneWhoHasAHeart · 20/10/2025 18:27

What rubish.

What good do you think marching in London is doing exactly? That’s right. None.

The only thing these protesters are is virtue signallers or thugs. Take yer pick.

There is absolutely nothing to be achieved by protesting to “free Palestine” or whichever country it is they might protest about next when they’re doing it in London. Or do you think that the Israeli government are out there thinking “there was a protest in London on Saturday, a few thousand people were there. Terrifying. We’d better declare a ceasefire.”?

It's clear that Palestine Action are probably a terrorist supporting group, so I have no sympathy with people there on that account.

However, you're being disingenuous. There are plenty of reasons to protest about a foreign event despite not being able to directly change it. To raise awareness for charity, for one thing. To pressure the UK government: Israel does take notice of foreign suppprters' views at least somewhat.

I hope you aren't someone saying Gaza protestors should protest about Sudan instead ('as well', yes). That would be hypocritical, since protests are even less likely to move the murderous RSF..

bythebanksof · 20/10/2025 17:22

For the UK protesters, I'd like to see the same level of focus on the Iranian role. There has been really minimal public understanding of their role for decades in funding and guiding terrorism in the middle east and beyond.

If you read any of the "sentiment" surveys then you'll see how people's understanding of, and attitude towards, Israel has changed - worldwide. People know more about Israel as a state. This will have a long term impact. Hopefully such groups can do the same for Iran?

For the other Gaza protesters who want to annex it and remove Palestinians. They'll just have to carry on as best they can. They are in government, and have very large support in Israel. www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/2025/08/right-wing-israeli-settlers-annex-gaza/683776/

I agree re Iran.

Do you agree with forcibly removing Palestinians?

I was in London at the weekend. All the noise outside Downing Street was about Digital IDs.

Don't you think there are at least concerning aspects to having digital ID?

Carla786 · 18/11/2025 19:40

Dangeos · 20/10/2025 16:25

I volunteer at a soup kitchen in town most weekends.

But anyway yes the people who suspect that Digital ID is going to become the new thing, I reckon you’re onto something there.

Don't you think there are valid concerns about digital ID?

Carla786 · 18/11/2025 19:37

FrenchBunionSoup · 20/10/2025 08:17

My guesses would be:
A) anti-AI and/or pro-Universal Basic Income; and
B) Disability discrimination, but in a way that is going to make things much worse for disabled people.

There are valid issues with AI though.

How do you think protests might worsen things for disabled people?

Carla786 · 18/11/2025 19:36

WeAreOnTheRoadToNowhere · 20/10/2025 07:11

They will be waiting for instructions re what their next belief should be. Friend of mine (socialist worker) gets bused around the country marching.
Never was useful idiot so appropriate
I think it is about appearing virtuous and believing themselves to be a 'good person'
Once they have decided who is the oppressor and who is the oppressed they can justify any behaviour. That's how they shout at and abuse women who are meeting to discuss women's rights. They are oppressors so all abusive behaviour is acceptable

They don't sound very helpful, to say the least.

But why be friends with someone you clearly look down on (with justification, it sounds)?

Carla786 · 18/11/2025 19:34

MrsSkylerWhite · 19/10/2025 23:16

Absolutely. It’s crystal clear. Both “sides” are equally heinous. Why is it so difficult to hold both truths in your head at the same time? Seems impossible to many people.

This. Though I do think Hamas are worse. Likud has some evil people though.

Carla786 · 18/11/2025 19:32

Gloriia · 19/10/2025 20:57

Oh perhaps this should be our guide. See who the petunias are for next.

It's down to the media really. It depends what they focus on to whip up those easily whipped up.

They really should try Nigeria or Sudan. The marchers do not seem to care about African countries for some reason.

Tbf that's the case for a lot of MN..on Sudan threads I've seen a lot of posts saying they have compassion fatigue because of decades of terrible news from Africa. The fact many migrants coming in small boats, including criminals, are from Africa, probably exacerbates that

Ironically global village style news often makes us less compassionate.

Pollqueen · 19/10/2025 19:16

Back to the poor trans folk, throwing paint at stuff and gluing themselves to roads i suspect

There are so many worthwhile causes around the world, genocide in Sudan, Yemen, the Uighars, FGM and rights of women in so many parts of the world, to name a few, but for some reason these get totally overlooked

Trans people are often in vulnerable and mentally unhealthy states. There should be a movement to help.

It's very hard though when the majority wany atrocious things like access to women's spaces and the wider movement is crazy. But it's wrong to say they don't need help. They're getting the wrong kind.

Carla786 · 18/11/2025 19:24

OonaStubbs · 18/11/2025 19:20

Why don't they protest about something that affects British people? They might get a lot more support and sympathy? Protest against the TV licence or against tax rises. Or against the wrong criminals being freed from prisons.

Presumably they felt that we shouldn't just care about British causes?

But I agree most people have enough to worry about here right now- and Hamas supporters basically ruined what could have been a legitimate protest urging humane treatment of civilians.

Rexinasaurus · 18/11/2025 19:23

It’s hard to imagine these days. Who’d have thought, we’d ever be in the position whereby there’s a ‘cause’ telling us men are women. Where we would get cancelled for saying men can’t be women. Luckily it’s over now (in the uk). But on that basis who knows what’s next.

Digital ID? Well that’d be a worthwhile one. We shouldn’t have mandatory digital id and should all refuse to have it foisted upon us. Our own personal data is worth millions to others and we should keep it to ourselves. They can’t arrest all of us.

Carla786 · 18/11/2025 19:21

HailCeaser · 19/10/2025 16:41

I think it will be something around protesting against old people owning property, you see a lot of that sort of rhetoric amongst those types,

You do realise that most of the people arrested protesting for Palestine Action were over-60?

OonaStubbs · 18/11/2025 19:20

Carla786 · 18/11/2025 19:19

Lots of Reform voters hate digital ID, among others. I don't know why it keeps being cited as a woke omnicause thing.

Tiredofwhataboutery · 19/10/2025 00:37

I assume it’s back to energy protests or digital ID. I do think the next big thing will be China occupying Taiwan in the next year or two. Do you support a people wanting to be independant who are also responsible for pretty much all the chips that fuel AI which is incredibly energy intensive.

Decisions, decisions …

Does Taiwan's energy use mean they don't deserve independence?

And if China control them, does that necessarily mean they'll use less energy? I doubt that.

Carla786 · 18/11/2025 19:17

BlushingBrightly · 19/10/2025 00:13

They were probably at the one against digital ID today. It's Saturday afternoon, it's central London, it's this week's outing for the omnicause.

Don't you think there are valid reasons to be concerned about digital ID?

Notmymarmosets · 18/10/2025 23:31

Something that they have absolutely no influence over. And that winds people up for a good march, but involves no actual self sacrifice. So possibly no more kings, or abortion rights in any country other than their own.

Don't you think at least more scrutiny of our monarchy is a worthy cause given the revelations about the extent of Andrew and Sarah's wrongdoing & the tolerance of it?

Yes, we have relatively little influence over our monarchy, but that is completely wrong, and should be changed. And it's an issue that does directly concern our country.

sabababa · 22/10/2025 17:18

Yes, im sure individual soldiers have as have soldiers in every conflict including many British soldiers in each.and every conflict they have been involved in and those individuals should be held accountable. That was never disputed.

Unfortunately the IDF, members of the government and individual soldiers have committed war crimes.

Neither "they started it" nor "I was following orders" is a defence.
