Why do British people (at least on MN!) Have such issues with adults celebrating birthdays?

This has always been really striking to me & I've been on this site on & off for at least 15+ years.

The idea that adults like to celebrate their birthday brings out such negative reactions. I've never understood it!

Is it a cultural thing?

I'm Irish & we generally love to celebrate & speaking for me & my circle, we see the joy in marking these occasions as so many dont get that privilege.

But MN is another world when it comes to this!

Why is that?

It's usually an attempt to suck some joy out of the OP or another hapless poster who mentions celebrating.
Also, it occasionally involves having a drink, which is Very Bad in the mumsnet universe, almost as bad as answering the front door.

LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway · 18/10/2025 20:10

@DontGoJasonWaterfalls Ha, ha, totally!!!

And don't forget, when someone says they do a certain thing, and another poster does it, that other poster must say 'are you me?' 😜

😂

DontGoJasonWaterfalls · 18/10/2025 20:05

It's just one of those weird Mumsnet things. To belong on Mumsnet you must:

Make a small chicken last a family of six for a week
Be unable to eat a children's meal at a restaurant without being so full you feel physically sick
Have six foot tall rugby playing sons with hollow legs
Hate your mother in law (but call her "D"MIL anyway)
Secretly judge fat people (and openly judge them on here)
Start every thread with "is it just me...?"
Complain that people decorate for Christmas too early, on Christmas Eve

And, of course
Think that adults celebrating their birthdays are incredibly childish.

LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway · 18/10/2025 19:59

To be honest @BlazesBoylansHat I don't know a single person in real life, who thinks it's odd to celebrate birthdays as an adult. I'm sure there are a few, I just don't know any!

I'm not arsed myself as I'm an old gimmer, and CBA with my own birthday. But I don't think there's anything wrong with celebrating birthdays as an adult. And I love making a fuss of others. My DC, my DH, my extended family, and my friends etc... Flowers, chocolates, wine, smellies, socks (for the men, never for the women - why is that?!) 😆 And multiple other goodies that they like!

I like putting up birthday banners, and getting a cake for them, and lots of treats! What's not to love? Only on Mumsnet do people diss adults celebrating birthdays. It's a batshit parallel universe on here!

SumUp · 18/10/2025 19:56

I don’t have a big celebration for mine because in my culture it isn’t a thing, but each to their own. If someone wants me to help them celebrate their birthday I am happy to take part.

Because it's childish, and I don't like being the centre of attention?

I'd much rather celebrate something communal, like Christmas, where everyone gets gifts and it's about being together.

So it’s a you problem.

I don’t like being the centre of attention either but I still celebrate my birthday (go off and do something solo) and others’ birthdays however they like (within reason) because why not celebrate the day you were born and another year of life and possibilities.

I think people are a bit more ridiculous and dranatic (especially with the emotional manipulation) when it comes to Christmas. The amount of moaning about it on MN alone is way more compared to birthdays.

Do you think everyone who celebrates is childish ?

LOL what? going out for a birthday meal celebration is "childish" and yet sitting around a Christmas tree festooned with baubles with presents delivered by a fat man in a red suit trimmed with fur in a sleigh is, what- "mature"?

LOLOL

Oh FGS birthdays are such over the top attention seeking crapology, especially when they are celebrated like a wedding. Honestly what goes on in people's heads to think that anyone but yourself is even remotely interested in how many candles you need this year. I'm sick of it.

But I don't believe much of what is said on various threads, so roll your dice about the above paragraph. 😊

I don't know any 'British' people who object to adults having birthday celebrations. I've never met anyone in real life who thought it was odd.

MN is full of weirdos (who may, or may not be British)

It's full of women who are resentful martyrs, or who don't like celebrating birthdays but have no emotional intelligence to realise it's their issue, not because it's a terrible thing to do.

I have a real challenge celebrating mine but am acutely aware that it's a me issue not that I am right and therefore superior.

It's like the odd person who told the woman who was thrilled to have been upgraded to business that she must not show any excitement at all - why?

Tigerbalmshark · 18/10/2025 19:42

Birthday celebrations are great. Birthdayzillas aren’t (kicking off because their present wasn’t good enough, somebody didn’t cancel their wedding to come to your non-milestone birthday, somebody didn’t intuit you wanted them to organise and pay for a massive bash for you and all your friends, somebody couldn’t afford your 9 day overseas birthday extravaganza and made their excuses…)

It’s birthdayzillas who I see getting their arse handed to them on here. Not somebody just having a normal birthday celebration.

Itiswhysofew · 18/10/2025 19:34

Every adult I know celebrates their birthday. DN always treats herself to a few days away for hers. DS always does something, as do I. I don't drink alcohol, so wouldn't go to the pub, but I do go out to eat, get pressies and have a cake.

Okay Hmm

It’s just competitive misery. No celebrations, no heating, and no eating except a massive salad.

So true hahahaha, also so much hate if you have any nice things or like your life - or MIL!

Cakeandcardio · 18/10/2025 19:26

I am starting to realise MN is just another world full stop! Such bonkers attitudes on here it really is quite incredible. I am with you - celebrating birthdays is great!

ImWearingPantaloons · 18/10/2025 19:25

God knows!! I don’t just have a birthday, I have a birthday week!!

Ghhbiuj · 18/10/2025 19:24

It's fine to celebrate birthdays but on here people seem to get a bit hung up about their birthday being "perfect" or presents being right.

I find it weird that they care that much.

GingerPaste · 18/10/2025 18:55

In ‘real’ life, I’m sure that most people celebrate birthdays. On MN (especially for the unknowing few that make the mistake of posting on AIBU), there’s a bunch of people sprinting faster than Usain Bolt to be the first to criticise and humiliate anyone who posts about having a birthday celebration, or about their birthday being ruined - usually by their third rate partner.

I love celebrating my birthday, even to the point of buying myself presents.

Houseoftrouser25 · 18/10/2025 18:55

I think it's more that a certain amount of posters HAVE to disagree with any Op just to be arsey .
They are usually full of their own anger

OutingHobbiesAgain · 18/10/2025 18:53

At my 50th, I loved the short but funny and loving speeches from my husband and adult kids. I like that my kids can see me as a person with a history and friends and as someone who can be celebrated. It was a fantastic evening. We looked after the guests very well too. So much food and drink!

FlatErica · 18/10/2025 18:53

We don’t! At least me and my friends don’t. Who are these miserable buggers who don’t enjoy celebrating each other’s birthdays?

mindutopia · 18/10/2025 18:52

It was my birthday two weeks ago and I’m still celebrating. I had birthday dinner round 2 last night. All the birthday banners are still up. I went away last weekend (not for my birthday, it was for a meeting), but I took my birthday cards with me and decorated my hotel room 😂). I celebrate my birthday for like a month. I wouldn’t expect anyone else to, other than Dh and dc who come along for the ride, but life is short. We should be having fun while we’re here.

Americano75 · 18/10/2025 18:48

stclementine · 18/10/2025 17:44

God knows. Any excuse to celebrate is my attitude. Life’s hard and stressful, why not take an opportunity to have some fun?

This. Life is short and the world can be a horrible place, we need as much joy and good vibes as possible. I never did the whole baby shower or gender reveal thing because it's not my thing, but I love watching GR videos on Facebook.

Hohumdedum · 18/10/2025 18:31

I don't mind people celebrating birthdays, especially significant ones. I don't like making a big deal of my birthday though because:

  1. I have a massive fear that no one will come to my party and I'll feel pathetic with no friends.
  2. Gift giving is definitely not my love language. I don't need random stuff. I don't like the stress of trying to remember other people's birthdays and buying them random stuff.
  3. I don't need a reminder that I'm getting older.

All of this.
