Motability cars - should they be UK made?

Pandersmum · 18/10/2025 09:49

Motability cars are currently in the news with suggestions VAT will be added. I realise they are a lifetime to some and a perk to others. They are a huge annual cost to the tax payer.

AIBU to think that all motability car choice should be limited to those manufactured in the UK? This would support British manufacturing worker jobs and increase UK business tax revenue whilst still providing cars for those who need them?

Just a heads up

@Pandersmum is all over mumsnet talking about PIP and benefits cuts just as you’d expect from an Op who starts this kind of thread

Ah, thanks.

Gingernessy · 18/10/2025 15:11

Does he work?

Yes, however that doesn’t matter as PIP is not and has never been an out of work benefit.

I think there will be huge reform of the scheme to come in general to be honest, with changes made to the vehicles etc. They don’t need to be £30k cars for a start.

Can you find a car to take two children, one adult driver and one adult in their powerchair (they can’t transfer) under £30k with adaptions completed?

HRTQueen · 18/10/2025 15:12

Kirbert2 · 18/10/2025 15:03

But the only people who are going to be paying the higher advance payments for those cars are those who can afford them because it isn't covered from PIP or DLA money.

So why does it matter?

Edited

But the higher rate pip is going towards the car in some cases

what is the need for the higher range car

most of us would like a higher range value car than we have (I would love a golf but not in my price range) but we can’t have one

so we have a car that does the job that we need it to

while I appreciate than many people will feel they are being got at the system isn’t working, it’s not working well enough for many who need that extra support but it’s working too well for people who play it

and that absolutely needs to be addressed

TeaAndTattoos · 18/10/2025 15:12

So because they are disabled they should be limited in choice like they already are with most
things but if your able bodied you can have your pick of any car. Do you know how disabilist that is.

My wheelchair bound paralysed friend is a parent of two, so according to you as he can look after his own children he doesn’t need it.

Does he work?

Timeforabitofpeace · 18/10/2025 15:10

(And, clearly, fit for purpose)

Timeforabitofpeace · 18/10/2025 15:09

They should be cost effective.

Gingernessy · 18/10/2025 15:09

MsPavlichenko · 18/10/2025 09:56

Why should disabled people, who already face limited choice and opportunities have fewer options than non disabled people when choosing a car to lease? The level of PIP fraud is almost zero, and you need a higher level award to use the Motability scheme.

Fraud is only zero because we don't have the technology or man power to check claims once awarded.
All claimants should have to agree to periodic surveillance to ensure what they can't do is genuine.

Harriet9955 · 18/10/2025 11:31

I know one has claimed it for over 10 years for physical problems ( fibro etc ) yet works as a cleaner for 40 hours a week, rides a huge motorbike etc. Know a few who claim not to be able to walk more than 20m yet can look after very young grandkids for days on end etc. They really need to be assessing people more thoroughly for this benefit.
I don't think changes should be made to the motorbility scheme though it's a lifeline for many. They just need to make sure the people who genuinely need it are getting it.accessing it.

I believe UK manufactured cars are Toyota, Nissan, Vauxhall, Mini, Jaguar Land Rover plus other prestige marques. Quite a range

That really doesn’t surprise me - they went very quickly to talking about benefits for disabled people and moved on from having an issue with a charity scheme that enables people to use it to lease cars at an (almost) affordable rate. It’s actually a very expensive scheme for the lease holder but there a few choices when you need a WAV.

Overthemhills never mentioned British made

I mentioned higher range value of cars

not everyone who gets mobility cars is in need of a car that needs to be adapted for their needs

this is where PIP is problematic the mh issues and the physical needs issues sometimes they cross over

and other times they do not but people know how to work the system and this is where they are trying to become tougher but it’s impacting many who are not playing the system

But the only people who are going to be paying the higher advance payments for those cars are those who can afford them because it isn't covered from PIP or DLA money.

Overthemhills · 18/10/2025 15:02

@HRTQueen
Can you explain how the scheme is open to abuse. It isn’t at all obvious - please explain.

Overthemhills · 18/10/2025 15:01

I’m still hoping that there’s some good intentions behind people who would prefer Motability (a charity) didn’t exist.
I can’t imagine how it would be well-intentioned though.
As it’s a SCHEME (how it operates) not a car manufacturer or stockist ie much like a bank if you like - why that is objectionable.
I expect the resentment that people have are from “stories” (using that loosely) about people with acne (!) getting free cars and so on.
The issue with Joe Acne is actually a problem with the DWP then as it’s the DWP that awards the qualifying benefits..
And/or the medical professionals who can’t decipher if conditions are debilitating in an individual’s life.
And once again for those at the back - should everyone on universal credit be monitored on their legitimate use of the funds they receive. Should they be forced to have vouchers to spend on specifically British grown food or pay rent to only British landlords or buy British cars or British clothes

Ford aren't manufactured in the UK. As said, neither are some of the Vauxhall models that are good for carrying wheelchairs and oxygen etc. My DP decided to buy his Ford Eco Sport outright (with his private critical illness payment), they are ideal because they are slightly higher and the boot opens out sidewards, many disabled people struggle to close boots. But they aren't made in the UK.

My point was about higher range value of cars that are on the scheme

i personally do no know what cars are and are not manufactured in the UK

I know higher range of value cars are available on the scheme and available to people who do not need it to be adapted to them. How can the be of course it’s open to being exploited it’s a ridiculous situation

Yes they should

What is wrong with having a Vauxhall or Ford (as examples of lower to mid range cars)

why are larger higher range BMW’s and Mercedes even on the list

and there is plenty of PIP fraud what there is also is people who are desperately needing the extra support not quite reaching the threshold which they absolutely should do and having to fight for it

the PIP system and benefits in general is a mess

we have 1 in 4 young adult’s on long term sick with a huge increase in PIP applications/payments of course something is very wrong

@Cantbleedingcope
But no one can just walk into a car dealership and buy a car, using the Motability scheme with someone else’s award.
The scheme - as someone upthread complained about - involves paying the insurance on that car.
When I applied to Motability the contract had to be checked with medical records supplied as well as DLA award and the contract to swap DLA was made between Motability and the DWP. Allied Mobility then supplied the WAV.
Admittedly I don’t know if there’s much option to look at cars of huge variation but the context of the young people using granny’s award (which one I wonder) to o secure funding either had GRANNY as the fraud and the card dealership as lunatics they can’t distinguish an older woman from two young men

Well that's it you need proof admittedly we didn't take my son with us when we signed for and later picked up.l his mobility car ,but I had proof I'm his appointee and I had to take proof that he gets HRM my DH also had to bring his driving licence as the named driver and only certain makes and models are available certainly no sporty little numbers

How many cars?

I just looked at the site. Not choosing any filters eg seat number, transmission type, fuel type, looking at no down payment, there are 41 cars to choose from. So not the massive free for all!!
