Motability cars - should they be UK made?

Pandersmum · 18/10/2025 09:49

Motability cars are currently in the news with suggestions VAT will be added. I realise they are a lifetime to some and a perk to others. They are a huge annual cost to the tax payer.

AIBU to think that all motability car choice should be limited to those manufactured in the UK? This would support British manufacturing worker jobs and increase UK business tax revenue whilst still providing cars for those who need them?

I honestly can't keep up with it all. I still have no idea if the Government is going ahead with the changes to the point scores, with the daily living part of PIP, and now this is being touted about Motability. They seem to not realise that this all causes a lot of worry for people living with disabilities, and of course their carers.

I can’t see that Motability will agree to pay the VAT on the new cars themselves. IMO, they may either ask for the VAT at the time of the advance payment; or they may spread it over the 3 year lease through the lease payments.

That may be ok, for some people who are well paid by work? I can’t see most people, living just on benefits being able to take a £2,000+ cut per year in their benefits, on top of COL increases, especially people who have to pay VAT on adaptations on top.

I think Car Wow are right to say the future of the scheme hangs in the balance. It could collapse?

I was told by someone on another thread that we should use taxis - as if a taxi driver is going to want someone liable to have a seizure and wet themselves/be sick in their cab!

That's exactly what I have to do. Yesterday it was close to £30.

I will put a claim in but I'll probably get about £2.50.

I'm on the 'two week pathway' so in a short mount of time I have had, a colonoscopy, an endoscopy, a chest X-ray, an ultrasound and next week I have a CT scan.

I thank the goddess of debt for my credit card.

I at least changed my mind after hearing people's stories on here.

That is good to hear. Those posters who are so honest about their struggles with their own disabilities, or those of their loved ones, have not bared all, to just be dismissed.

That doesn’t really tell us much. I don’t understand how it would work practically if this is implemented.

It would cost more for people who have to have adaptations, is what I have understood.

Car Wow discusses how disabled people could be profoundly affected:

It's the same people on every thread like this making arsehole comments. They change their usernames (because they are cowards) but it's noticeable from their content and phrasing that it is the same person.

What is beyond my comprehension is what kind of idiot is jealous that DD1 gets a new Motability car every three years, when she can need to be taken to A & E three times a week, if she weren’t living in a specialist care home with onsite medical staff (which we expect Reform to close down); and she can die at any time, either from Sudden Death in Epilepsy or non stop seizures - as she’s in the highest risk group.

She has also been suffering massive cognitive deterioration since the age of 16 - it’s very like she’s got dementia!

I’ve spent my working life among wealthy people; and I don’t get jealous. Likewise we have seen friends, earning say £350,000 pa and accumulating £10 or £20 or £100 million - way more than we have earned or could accumulate, because we have a disabled child, who has stressed us out and taken up so much work time with appointments and meetings. We don’t get jealous.

It’s as the Director of Children’s Mental Health in our county, used to tell us, at the twins club

”Life is not fair and no parent can make it fair for their children!”

Why are people jealous of a disabled person’s fairly average new car; but not the ultra rich who may have 20 very expensive cars? It’s pathetic!

I know it makes no sense my 15 year has never spoken a,word in his life he's severely autistic has severe learning disabilities need, 1:1 supervision will never live independently, but yeah we have mobility car.

There really are some thick cunts around aren't there ?

How does someone who cannot leave the wheelchair manage ? That's a black cab only. (Although big shout out to Uber Access who are slowly spreading into the UK).

Lots of people do though. There will always be people who have a problem with those, that they see as others. The thing about disability, is that it can happen to absolutely anyone, not just those born with a disability. They tend to forget that.

I'm also wondering where all the extra Patient Transport ambulances are coming from to get all these sick and disabled people to hospital appointments who usually drive/are driven there in their Motability cars that they will no longer be able to afford to have.
No way could my DD have gone on public transport to appointments even if there had been any public transport available.

Yep.

I usually bring up on these types of threads that my son wasn't born disabled but then all of a sudden, he was. Life can change in an instant.

Well you see Fuww, if someone says something completely hateful, and you point that out it's actually you that's the hateful one. Pointing out that racist/disabilist posts are racist /disabilist is hat speech and a reason we can't have civilised discourse in this country. Humph and the bleeding heart lefties like to think they're the kind ones. Etc etc

Yes, the Nazis certainly found that aspect of the holocaust pretty lucrative! I'm loathed to invoke Godwin's Law but, given that so many comments on these threads have a faint but unmistakable foul whiff of eugenics about them, I'd say comparisons to Nazi Germany are fair game on this and similar threads!

If you can't beat them, buy shares in (foreign) chemical companies. The ones that are suspiciously cheap.

Everlore · 21/10/2025 12:21

SerendipityJane · 21/10/2025 12:10

Not to mention the fact they think it would save money is laughable.

Well if you steal peoples valuables and seize their property before dispatching them, you could turn a profit.

While it may not be possible or even desirable to shut down every thread that may offend people, MN has moderators for a reason and they can, and do, delete posts which are considered to contravene community guidelines on discriminatory language and hate speech.
My point is that the MN threshold for actually removing disturbing and offensive content about disabled people is so absurdly high they allow the most reprehensible slurs and suggestions about disabled people to remain unmoderated and brush off any reports they receive. I would hope that they wouldn't take this laisser-faire approach to blatant and unapologetic hate speech aimed at other groups, but it seems perfectly acceptable when only disabled people are the targets.
In case you think I am hyperbolic and at the risk of sounding like a broken record, MN has continued to allow this thread, which advocates for the forced removal of disabled children from their families and their incarceration in state run institutions in the name of saving the government money on DLA and carer's allowance, to remain unmoderated, despite multiple reports from concerned members. If a thread advocating the forced segregation and detention of all disabled people, including children, is not deemed unacceptable then it is all to apparent that the MN authorities consider extreme ableist hate to be just fine. The situation on here is so dire that I doubt that even a post going full eugenics advocating the compelled sterilising or termination of disabled people would be deleted at this point.
If you wonder what the harm in leaving even a thread as toxic as the one I am linking to could possibly be, may I advise you to read the comments, if you have the stomach for it, in which similarly-minded posters, emboldened by the OP's revolting original post, gleefully chime in with their own abhorrent thoughts, including suggesting that spending any money on the care and education of disabled children is wasteful because they will never be able to contribute financially to society and are therefore worthless and other comments revelling in the imminent starvation and death of disabled people when the welfare state inevitably collapses.

Quite honestly if my son lost his Motability car the knock on effect would be awful for him and we’d have to make significant changes to mitigate that.
Firstjy it’s his access with the outside world and without it he would have a smaller life.
Secondly it would mean to get him out we’d rely on my husband’s vehicle. This in effect would remove my transport to work, I’d have to leave my job for something closer and likely less well paying,

Okay none of this is the end of the world until you consider I am the breadwinner. I pay the bills my husband provides the care our son needs. We would be poorer and likely have to claim benefit top ups . We’d survive…we always do,

Oh and should Keni Badenoch be reading….nobody gets Motability vehicles for ADHD alone as you bloody well know so STOP with that rhetoric. My son has Level 2 autism, he is learning disabled, he also has ADHD so it goes on his application but that is NOT the reason he reaches the Mobility higher rate threshold. ADHD alone would be a bloody dream and mean he could likely work as his intellectual capabilities would not be impaired. Silly woman:

I can tell you ADHD is no dream! My family members have it, co morbid with autistic traits, OCD and severe anxiety. The impact on executive functioning can be severe, which really affects day to day life. The ability to do a job can be questionable, what with the OCD, lack of attention and impulsivity. They can just walk out of jobs. Really, they need a partner for the organisation of modern life, otherwise they’d end up in the gutter.

I find looking after DD1 with a congenital brain abnormality, severe epilepsy, complex learning difficulties and disability (functioning around 18m to 4y) and challenging behaviour easier than looking after DD2 with ADHD, OCD, severe anxiety and probably undiagnosed autism.

Exactly it's infuriating, Apparently ADHD can now be considered a diagnosis for the incomplete or arrested development of the brain component under SMI however as we know it's far more complicated than just having a diagnosis of ADHD and anyone who believes that needs to educate themselves.
