To ban YouTube completely for 6year old?

My DS (6) watches little TV, he doesn't even have a tablet and I make sure that we have a huge amount of time crafting/ outdoors. However he really loves watching a bit of these Minecraft clips and also some of these daft vidoes where youtubers do all sorts of rubbish - some of this stuff is so ridiculously stupid that I just had to try it off the other day, my dS absolutely exploded as wet mad that I turned it off. AIBU to complete my ban YouTube and only let him watch TV/ or Disney? Or will that make him want YouTube even more?

I only allow YouTube with the restriction of a handful of safe channels I've allowed. It's tricky to figure out how to do it, they really should make it easier. And you do have to keep an eye on the channels to make sure they don't suddenly start publishing crap.

I wouldn't hesitate to ban it if it were causing problems though. My six year old knows if he complains about turning it off he won't have it again until I decide - usually a few days.

mumofoneAloneandwell · 17/10/2025 19:33

I removed YouTube for my dd(6)

It just has a weird, unsafe feel

YANBU - I banned YouTube for my 6yo for exactly the reasons you say.
She can access YouTube kids which is a vast improvement on what she was watching, but there is still rubbish on there and I can only stand her watching so much of it before I turn it off.
At 6 they can enjoy Disney movies etc, so there’s other options.

KittyRannaldini · 17/10/2025 19:22

Mine is 7, never had any YouTube or a tablet or been allowed to watch anything on my phone. She has TV when I'm with her.

themerchentofvenus · 17/10/2025 19:21

My DS is Y10 and YouTube is blocked. I only unlock it temporarily if he wants to use a backing track for music/band.

He also isn't allowed TikTok or Social Media.

Personally I'd ban under 15s from having Smart phones.

avocadotofu · 17/10/2025 19:18

I think that’s totally reasonable; our seven year old has never watched YouTube.

Zanatdy · 17/10/2025 19:11

I would. When I last saw my 3yr old nephew he just wanted youtube on TV. Not educational cartoons like mine used to watch, but some rich russian family doing random stuff - vlad and nicky or something. Total brain rot. When he was younger they banned all TV so I was amused things had changed so much. He doesn’t have a tablet apart from travel but knows how to ask for it on living room TV.

KeenGreen · 17/10/2025 19:10

Nope ban it! Do it prepare for the battle though he’s seen it and now you’re taking it away.

DS is 5.5 never seen YouTube has a tablet with NO YouTube access I'm keeping it that way as long as possible! I feel that’s easier in many respects than giving it and having to take it away though.

cannynotsay · 17/10/2025 19:08

Take the YouTube away! He’ll get over it

Amethystanddiamonds · 17/10/2025 19:05

It's banned for the children to access on their own in our house. There is absolutely no unboxing or Minecraft allowed. It's not banned completely though there is some good educational stuff on it which they watch with us. They're currently eating pizza whilst learning about relativity.

Ilovepastafortea · 17/10/2025 18:51

My DD & SIL carefully monitor what their children (aged 11 & 8) watch on TV & their on-line access. They don't have phones, no TVs in their rooms and use the internet on parent's devices only whilst a parent (or DGP when we're baby sitting) is in the same room and can see the screen. They're encouraged to play outdoors, visit friends and have friends visit to play, take part in lots of activities such as sports, drama, dance, Brownies etc.

I regret that my DS & DIL are less assiduous about protecting their children (of similar ages) who have Smart phones, TVs in their bedrooms and rely on parental controls to police their access to the internet. But that is their choice and I wouldn't ever criticise as it's not my place to tell them how to bring their children up.

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 17/10/2025 18:22

Banned in our house. Dh has to do some wizardry with a firewall if he wants to watch some video on how to repair stuff, or give temporary access because the bloody school has set homework which starts with a video hosted on YouTube.

Kids are 15 and 12. Can immediately spot if they've managed to get access because their behaviour goes to sh*t. They are argumentative and horrible. Their attention span suffers and it's a back hole of rubbish including Kids Youtube. Plus you can switch on Youtube Live and basically broadcast yourself which is impossible to lock down - that was an edifying moment in a school cyber security talk.

Kill it, you won't regret it. I warn you now though, it is so addictive they will turn into expert hackers

YANBU YANBU YANBU

Make sure you have also blocked the youtube website as otherwise they can just access it via the browser!

UsernameMcUsername · 17/10/2025 17:08

I banned my youngest from Youtube very soon after letting him try at at age seven. I've always limited screentime reasonably strictly anyway, but for some reason Youtube really impacted his behaviour. He'd get properly stroppy about turning off, imitate some of the more bratty ways of speaking on it etc. I let him have it again around aged 8.5 and he was fine with it.

Kindlealltheway · 17/10/2025 16:50

We don’t let our similar age child watch YouTube. Occasionally we will watch specific YouTube videos with him but if he’s going to watch something while we are doing something else, even in the same room, then we use a proper paid streaming service. If we know what show or movie he’s chosen on Netflix then I’m happy I have a good idea of what he’s being exposed to and just need to check in now and then to make sure he hasn’t switched over to something unsuitable (unlikely anyway since he’s on the kids Netflix profile). YouTube is the fucking Wild West. I know there’s a kids’ mode but an algorithm is not a replacement for responsible adults reviewing the content before it becomes available to watch.

FuzzyWolf · 17/10/2025 16:48

YouTube is banned in my house unless it homework related or an actual tutorial on how to do something (crochet or drawing an animal). It’s been banned for a few years now and I have no intention of changing that in the immediate future.

I’ve just gone cold turkey on all screen for my almost 4 year old. It’s been nearly 3 weeks now. YouTube nonsense was her favourite. I’ve seen such a positive improvement in her behaviour.

Ive done the same for my DD who’s the same age as yours, it’s been 4 months and her behaviour is soo much better. We watch films as a family (and she watches football with her dad as he loves it, now she does too!) but she doesn’t have any screen time apart from that

Plinketyplonks · 17/10/2025 16:44

My 11 year old only has it on the telly in the sitting room, it’s passcode protected so I have to put it on. He seems to watch football tips on if. My 7 year old doesn’t have access at all.

Yes , DS behaviour has gone downhill as well, I'm hoping that will improve with no screen time!

I don’t let DD5 watch any short-form videos that she can scroll through indefinitely. She can mainline movies on the TV all she likes, or 15 minute episodes of a kids series, but she happily asks questions & engages with DH or I if we’re watching those types of things together, which she doesn’t do on You Tube, she just mindlessly consumes it.

Damn sorry I should have marked the images as sensitive but I don't think I can now.

JillyGiraffe · 17/10/2025 16:40

Banned in our house too!

I have deleted YouTube from the tv as the kids would watch the same videos over and over and then spend lots of time begging me to let them watch some nonsense that it went on to recommend. It was driving me mad. They watch way too much tv regardless so getting rid of you tube at least restricts them a bit.

Oh gosh this exactly!! Why on earth do they keep watching them over and over??

BertieBotts · 17/10/2025 16:39

The algorithm on it defaults to some really alarming stuff, so if you want to let them use it for the positive stuff, do this under direct adult supervision or you can make a note of the channel name and allow it under a kids profile under the "restricted" setting - that will then only show the channels that you expressly approve.

The other kids' profile settings are still chock full of absolute trash, some of it is brainrot nonsense, some of it has really obnoxious behaviour you don't want them emulating, and some of it is actually scary/disturbing. I have to go through every couple of weeks and block 90% of the channels. I took some screenshots the other day of the absolute weird inappropriate stuff that comes up - the "spider" one was on the preschool setting (age 0-4) and the "nuke" one was on the young child setting (age 4-7). The thing that prompted me to go through and cull again was that I found my 7yo watching videos of people getting sucked into escalators and injured.

Not to mention the weird stuff I can only assume is fetish adjacent that somehow makes it through the filters, like the obsession with showing various children's characters pregnant, or receiving gigantic injections/dental treatments making them cry. (I don't have screenshots of these as I blocked them ages ago but they pop up again every so often).

Very close to just deleting the entire app unless I can get the restricted mode to work again.
