To believe we can retire the word "shagging"?

I was a teenager in the 90s, and the word for casual, semi casual, or run of the mill sexual congress was "shag", as in "shagging" "have a shag", "quick shag", and "shagged em".

I just think, this word has had its day. It has connotations with vintage rugs, thick carpets, unruly beards, and perhaps panting sheepdogs, that are uncomfortable. Other words exist. I don't want to be the self declared Word Police, and appreciate there will be other points of view on this very important topic, but please can we all consider never using it again?

I mean it’s better than ‘doing the deed’ or ‘rutting’. I worked with some Aussies who all call it rooting which is horrific.

Nothing wrong with a little shag.

That’s definitely fit for a thread on its own.

What about if someone is an absolute shag?

Teanbiscuits33 · 13/10/2025 22:46

I haven’t heard romp for years, apart from in a tabloid headline about celebrity affairs

AhBiscuits · 13/10/2025 22:45

I'm open to hanky panky.

Having it off?

This phrase always makes me think of Mr Lucas from Are You Being Served.

AhBiscuits · 13/10/2025 22:41

Banging is my preferred term.

InOverMyHead84 · 13/10/2025 22:41

No. The word is a classic and deserves to be respected as such.

SwedishEdith · 13/10/2025 22:41

Bonk is awful. Like a Sun word.

I think you're replying to the wrong poster. That phrase isn't in my helpful (Googled) list.

Shutuptrevor · 13/10/2025 22:39

Shagging is by far the best/easiest way to refer to it!

Snogging each others faces off, and feeling each other up!

reversingdumptruckwithnotyreson · 13/10/2025 22:39

Gross sounding word to me, but to be fair I’m ESL. I never use it and probably never will.

Runnersandtoms · 13/10/2025 22:39

I personally love a good rogering lol.

Zov · 13/10/2025 22:38

Nah, it's funny! 😆
