She’s as beautiful on the inside as she is on the outside” is that ok?

It’s my DD’s 18th Birthday tomorrow and we have parties planned etc but of course social media being so big I will acknowledge her bday on my SM platform.

I was planning on putting the title on my post tomorrow but wanted to get your opinions first. Is that ok? She is stunning and beautiful btw, though I’d put her main attributes first, funny, loveable, beautiful personality etc…

I'd buck the trend and not wish her happy birthday on SM.

Set a new trend of saying happy birthday to her in person.

This.

It's not very original.

LakotaWolf · 12/10/2025 02:19

Do you even care about how your DD might feel about you posting about her birthday on your social media, or is it only about how YOU feel and the fact that YOU want internet attention?

RiaRumaiver · 12/10/2025 02:16

I post this sort of thing on my social.media, & friends pass on their best wishes.
It's entirely up to you what you put on. Say whatever you want. I tend to avoid mentioning their physical attributes, & mention their strong character traits but that's me. (They've been feisty since they exited my womb. Not that I'd put that either!)
Enjoy the celebrations!

This.

Yes buck that trend. Social media, it’ll never catch on. No siree. I mean who at 18 looks at the socials
Of course, you’re taking your own advice and saying all this in person..,,oh hang on..

Lots of my friends make FB posts for their young adult kids' birthdays. They often put a baby pic next to the birthday pic, with a couple of lines on how exciting/inspiring/surprising/awesome/terrifying it's been to see their paragon through to adulthood.

I don't think there's anything wrong with your first thought, OP, but my friends don't actually call their kids beautiful - youth is beautiful and, anyway, there'll be long string of slightly creepy comments on her looks. They tend instead to praise their brains, ambition, wit, creativity, achievements, etc. My favourites are where they include something like 'piercing sarcasm' or 'can charmingly put anyone at ease, or crush them with a hard stare'.

Point being, they're personalised. And they ALWAYS say they're proud of the person the kid's become!

Its not embarrassing op. My mum passed away when I was 18, i still love reading the fb posts she put on my birthdays

Edited

Aww I’m so sorry to read this @Stephybris62 that’s really sad and just goes to show that whilst some may cringe about a SM post, others would appreciate it more than anything. My Mum passed away when I was a similar age so I understand what you’re going through 💕💔 Thank you for you post, it puts things back in to perspective for me x

I knew you’d get flamed for this OP! This is Mumsnet after alI - there’s a zero tolerance policy when it comes to things like birthday celebrations and the notion of physical beauty.

I think it’s an absolutely fine and normal thing to say to and about your DD. You’re overthinking it.

Thanks for this fab reply! I love it and it’s why I love this site. My god there are some knobs here but these nice replies often stand out to me, the supportive ones that understand where you’re coming from.

So thanks again lady, much love ❤️

How embarrassing! Please don't. Just say happy birthday with a photo. Not 10 photos and a gushy message. Her friends will take the p out of her.

CoffeeLipstickKeys · 12/10/2025 01:31

Oi, that’s not how it goes on AIBU. You don’t graciously thank posters, and reflectively depart
You’re supposed to get defensive, argue, calls us all cows and then flounce
I demand you retract your reasonable reflection and give us all the fight we expect

This is why I love Mumsnet - you get some twat* but you get lovely funny good spirited posters too, like you and @manicpixieschemegirl who I will tag separately.

Thanks both, you’re what the world needs! X

Oh, in what way? It’s an 18th remember?

It sounds cringe and cliche. Can’t you think of something else? A simple happy 18th is better.

SocksAndTheCity · 12/10/2025 01:34

If you're not going to see her to say Happy Birthday in person, surely you can phone her and say it? Or write it in a card?

Why does she have to receive her birthday greeting via some third party app?

Eatinghurts · 12/10/2025 01:34

maybe focussi on her now being an adult. Happy birthday to my amazing daughter looking forward to sharing the future with you.

a newborn pic with 18 years old today I did not dream of all the fun we have had. Excited to see what adulthood brings! Happy birthday.

I genuinely have no clue what you’re trying to go on about.

Just post what you want to post. Starting a thread like this is so strange.

This is Mumsnet after all, so it can’t be surprising to find out Mums ask for opinions about anything and everything… It really isn’t strange in the grand scheme of things

Every parent has stunning, beautiful and smart children. Our eyes couldn’t see anything else.

Kindly, I have to agree though that focusing your message on your daughter’s physical attributes will look a bit cringe. I never say happy birthday to my kids on FB or any SM.
I put what I want to say in a card and then it comes from the heart and doesn’t look like some sort of boast.

rodarrrach · 12/10/2025 01:27

If your first inkling OP was what you posted originally...just go for it with confidence...as it is from your heart. 💖
It's so lovely and heartfelt. Happy 18th Birthday to your beautiful daughter 💖
(Don't overthink it!!) Xx

As much as I want to disagree in this situation as my daughter is stunning 🤩 I think it’s right that I asked for opinions as l think they are right (fucking reluctantly 😐🙄) and it’s best to keep in simple

What would you put for advise then?

Advice? Do you mean you want advice on what to write? Or you want to include some life advice on your post? If that’s what you meant, please don’t do that; SM is not the place for that.

If you really want to make a big thing over it, then put a couple of cute baby photos up that won’t embarrass her in front of her mates, tell her she’s wonderful and that you’re very proud of her, and leave it at that.

CandleMug · 12/10/2025 01:19
