Had so much exposure on TV? He’s really really unfunny, he’s a crap stilted presenter and just makes everything awkward.

Then they went bankrupt

Yep.

TheClanoftheDook · 14/10/2025 08:22

God it’s absolutely fine to not find a comedian funny but dirty and scruffy? Really? Is that necessary?

TheClanoftheDook · 14/10/2025 08:18

Oh I won’t hear a word against Miranda I absolutely love her 😆

I think he went to private school until he was 12. That has nothing to do with poverty mindset.

Then they went bankrupt

What do you like about him? Genuinely I don’t find him funny. I mean I don’t dislike him as a person, he seems fine. But just not funny and an awkward presenter

I disagree with everything you've said. Which comedians make you laugh ? How would you describe your sense of humour ?
I have never understood how Miranda Hart has made a career out of making people laugh. I just do not find her funny, at all.

mjf981 · 14/10/2025 06:59

I don't really 'get' him either. It's the always grumpy look and slightly awkward nature of him. I don't find him easy to watch. There are plenty of others I'd put in the same category - Katherine Ryan, Ricky Gervais, James Acaster etc - they're just not my cup of tea at all. But I appreciate they must appeal to a lot of others.

Give me David Mitchell, Alan Carr, Micheal McIntyre, Maisie Adam, Jack Whitehall any day of the week.

To each their own I guess!

lollylo · 14/10/2025 06:50

He has what used to be called a sardonic sense of humour. I really like him on the radio. It’s sort of the opposite of slapstick, which I tend to dislike - I did not get Miranda at all for example.

He went to elite private schools - even after his father was in prison.

What bollocks!

Millions? Where did you get that stat from?

He's sold out multiple tours, added extra dates to the O2 this year, and touring america.

Everyone finds different honour funny, actually seen him live and thought he was hilarious.

Bonsaibaby · 13/10/2025 22:52

I think he’s brilliant I love listening to him on radio 2, he has me laughing out loud. He plays good music too, he seems more real than a lot of presenters and isn’t scared of looking ridiculous

SprayWhiteDung · 13/10/2025 22:50

Also fears of poverty aren't necessarily driven by any likelihood of actual poverty.

Even some billionaires seem to spend an awful lot of their time worrying about how to hold on to and increase their money, in spite of the fact that the numbers are now just academic.

Entertainers and TV personalities aren't biologically restricted to lucrative but relatively short careers in the way that professional sportspeople and athletes often are, but they know very well that they can fall out of favour and become unloved old chestnuts quickly, so why wouldn't they eagerly grab all of the opportunities that are offered to them whilst they're still in high demand, to set themselves up comfortably both for now and the likely several decades of their lives when they're no longer much in demand?

As this thread clearly proves, there are plenty of people already who really don't like to watch Romesh on TV (like most celebrities); so why would he turn down lots of lucrative offers now, at the top of his game, only to potentially find in however many years' time that even his current fans also find him hackneyed and no longer 'fresh', and he can only get work on the end of Cromer pier?

I'm no fan of Mrs Brown's Boys whatsoever, nor of the Love Island/reality TV lot; but again, I don't blame them for grabbing whatever they can get whilst it's still there for the taking.

He didn't go to elite private schools. Elite private schools are your likes of Eton and such. He went to an independent prep school that went up to 12.

showmethegin · 13/10/2025 22:32

They lost everything and he joined state sector. He talked about it on desert island discs. I find this kind of thread ever so odd. I don’t find Michael mcyintyre funny in the slightest but it’s not a mystery. People find different things funny.

Pretty sure the box ticking comment was a joke. I can think of several other comedians who have said similar- Zoe Lyons for example.

And I suspect Ramesh works so much for the same reason that Rob Beckett (and my DP, although he’s not a comedian!) do. Poverty mindset.

Couldn't disagree more. He's actually a very good presenter and very funny. Love seeing him on things.

hideawayforever · 13/10/2025 20:45

Totally agree with you OP, just not funny and seems full of himself

I don’t know. I don’t know him, so I don’t know why he said it. None of us are mind-readers.

Well supposing you were well-known by all your colleagues for being utterly useless at your job, but you knew you'd only been given it (and hadn't ever been sacked) because you had a protected characteristic and the boss thought it gave them some kudos having you there as a token to make up the diversity numbers... would YOU keep reminding your colleagues that you only got the job because of your race/disability/sexuality or whatever?

Chiaseedling · 13/10/2025 17:03

I like him, he’s great live, but agree he’s overexposed now.

user2848502016 · 13/10/2025 16:49

I quite like him, he’s got a dry humour which I usually enjoy

Redpeach · 13/10/2025 16:47

Rainymoondays · 13/10/2025 11:28

Nowhere and at no point have I mentioned his race or even alluded to it.

He does look grubby and dirty to me. But then as someone else above said, Joe Wilkinson does to her. It’s a massive stretch to say I think that because of his Sri Lankan heritage and probably says more about your perceptions than mine.

This is what he used to look like versus now. He looks like he needs a good hairwash, haircut and beard trim to me. End of.

That s not what he looks at when presenting his latest shows, but if you're desperate for him to be a grubby little man, then so be it

JHound · 13/10/2025 16:42

I find him very funny.

Romeshs mum is exactly like this in real life. Romeshs dad went to prison when he was a child and the family had to move into a BnB. They were living in one room.

Anyway his dad died at some point so think he's quite protective and involves her as she's on her own.

Crawley has a big fish in a little pond mentality like many small towns and I think Romeshs dry self deprecating humour is kind of what you develop to survive in those kind of towns.

I love his Mum and I think she fits in perfectly to the format of Parents' Evening.

Neither of them are trying to sell her as an amazing superstar - she just nicely balances the fact that all the celeb contestants are in parent/adult child couples and occasionally makes witty observations or acts as a foil for Romesh's gentle teasing at appropriate times.

And not that she is there just 'ticking boxes' any more than he is - after all, it's hardly surprising that Sri Lankan Romesh will have a mother who is also Sri Lankan and a generation older than him - but elderly Asian women are hardly over-represented on TV, are they?
