Unopened sanitary towel

Currently got my period. When I got home from work yesterday I dropped my bag by mistake and everything fell out. I put everything back (or so I thought) but then around half an hour later 9yo DS found one of my sanitary towels on the floor, picked it up and asked what it was. Just to clarify, it was unused (obviously) and still in the packet. I must have missed it when I was picking up things from my bag.

DH then shouted at DS to put it down (literally shouted at him) and then shouted at me asking why it was there. I explained to him what happened and he said it’s weird to be leaving things like that lying around.

I asked him to explain why it was “weird” but he couldn’t answer me.

AIBU to feel hurt by this? I don’t understand his reaction.

Your husband is being very odd about this and you really don't want his old fashioned weirdness (IE that periods are something to be hidden) to rub off on your son.

Normalise periods. Seeing a sanitary towel is a perfectly normal, every day occurrence. Just like having a period.

Your DH needs to get the fuck over it.

Dh has a strange opinion of them. I know one mum who has four boys who made sure she left her pads out saying her boys may have girlfriends and wives at some point and need to just accept them as they are similar to a toilet roll.

That's exactly what I did. Also say their sister had menstrual cramps, I'd say things like 'she's just having a lie down because her period is giving her cramps'.

Their Dad is super weird about this stuff, to the extent he called me to say our DD had a ran out of pads. I live an hour away from him and he expected me to do something! I was like, go to the bloody local shop! Think he sent our son in the end.

I wanted them to know it's completely normal and not something shameful when (if) they have girlfriends/daughters,

take10yearsofmylife · 10/10/2025 13:47

It's one of those thing some people are conditioned to believe, having period or breast feeding are disgusting therefore women should hide these away 🙄

Hankunamatata · 10/10/2025 13:44

Well your dh is weird

Iv boys and they have known what periods are and sanitary products form when they were small. They have sat on bathroom shelf for years

CalmTheFuckDownMargaret · 10/10/2025 13:37

What a silly man!

Jollyhockeystickss · 10/10/2025 13:36

When you son is in another room id be inclined to serve him his dinner with an un used on top of his dinner!!!

Perfect28 · 10/10/2025 13:30

You should probably talk to your kid about male and female puberty

TheBlueHotel · 10/10/2025 08:23

What a weird and misogynistic man you're married to

This!! What an asshole!!

jeaux90 · 10/10/2025 13:23

Make him do 10 laps round the garden with the towel stuck to his forehead! (Seriously your DH is a dick)

AgnesX · 10/10/2025 13:18

What age is your DH? Its an incredibly antiquated outlook.

He needs to get a grip. And it was wrapped!

MyDeftDuck · 10/10/2025 13:15

FFS…yet another bloke who thinks menstruation and sanitary products are dirty words!!!!
Tell the twat to get over himself and start living in the 21st century.
And explain to your DS what is was and what it is for……and reassure him that he did nothing wrong.

Your DH needs to get a grip.

^^ this. Succinct and to the point

ThreePointOneFourOneFiveNine · 10/10/2025 13:08

Is you DH normally a massive dickhead? Because I’m struggling to believe this is the only example of this sort of behaviour from him. He is massively out of order and unless he apologises profusely and comes up with a plausible explanation as to why it happened (eg him having just received some awful news and being extremely stressed and it all came out in the moment), I’m just going to skip the waiting to hear all the other ways he’s a nasty abusive arsehole and go straight to LTB. Decent men do not shout at women for dropping sanitary towels.

Illbefinejustbloodyfine · 10/10/2025 13:02

Jesus christ what a massive over reaction. How has your 9 year old got to 9 without knowing? Tell him what it us, and take the opportunity to explain tampons, moon cups, period pants and there is nothing weird ir embarrassing about any of them. And then tell your husband to get a fucking grip!

Needlenardlenoo · 10/10/2025 12:57

Ooh maybe a graph for Brownian and non Brownian fluids?!

Needlenardlenoo · 10/10/2025 12:56

Science innit!

CrostaDiPizza · 10/10/2025 12:54

@Megifer , why would you want to check how good sanitary products are at mopping up gravy or custard? If you need them to have good gravy absorption, I suggest you have a word with your GP.

Anywherebuthere · 10/10/2025 12:54

Is he of a culture where any period talk is considered taboo? It's a very extreme weird reaction.

I think I time to start leaving them out in the open so your DS and DH get used to seeing them and realise its not a taboo subject.

MinnieMountain · 10/10/2025 12:51

I generally use reusable stuff but I have some tampons in the bathroom.

I have taught DS that if a future girlfriend asks him to buy her sanitary products, the correct response is to ask exactly what she needs and to come back with her favourite treat too.

Needlenardlenoo · 10/10/2025 12:36

You win the Internet today.

I don't have periods any more but I'm going to buy a box of tampons to experiment with DD over half term now!

It was a lot of fun actually, if a little boring with some of the liquids as they took ages to soak up. We used:

Gravy of varying thicknesses
Fabric softener
Water (obvs)
Custard (rubbish)
Milk
Cornflour+water
Fairy liquid
Gaviscon
Cif

Enjoy!!

SandrenaIsMyBloodType · 10/10/2025 12:47

How very unattractive of him.
If he’s that squeamish about the ordinary workings of your vagina, he probably shouldn’t get too close to it!

LBFseBrom · 10/10/2025 12:47

Your husband needs to control his reaction. We are not living in the 1950s when such things were never mentioned in front of men.

Periods and sanitary wear are a normal part of life.

Many years ago I was at a wedding with my husband. We were sitting down and I opened my handbag to get a tissue and some tampons fell out of the little box I kept them in, they went rolling down the aisle. Your husband would have loved me :-).

Clarefromwork · 10/10/2025 12:47

Wow so he has just made it into a bigger deal with his reaction than if you had just explained to your son what it was.

C8H10N4O2 · 10/10/2025 12:38

Well obviously DH is a knob but the conversation with him should be about not passing on his weird hangups to his DC (of either sex).

If you are keeping them in the bathroom cupboard, as most do, it seems even weirder. Does he have similar hangups about loo paper or nappies when the DC were small?

Needlenardlenoo · 10/10/2025 12:36

Megifer · 10/10/2025 08:53

This has reminded me of the time when my DS at about 6 saw an advert for tampons and was asking q's about them, so we set up an experiment with mine seeing how absorbant they were with different thickness of liquids 🤣 they are rubbish with custard btw.

DP walked in and just 🙄 at us and carried on making his brew.

I have them in our first aid box just in case for deep cuts.

Your DH is so very strange and id be having words with him.

You win the Internet today.
