To feel like the tide of public opinion has turned against the pro-palestine protestors

Every social media feed I have is full of irate people commenting on pro-gaza protestors.

From people commenting on Greta Thunberg sharing the picture of the starving hostage and claiming it was a Palestinian (wtf was she thinking?!) , to the student saying Israelis should 'go back where they came from', there are thousands of angry comments. Lots of the protestors hiding their faces too, and on a local Uni group people are trying to name the protestors seen today and get them removed from their courses

I'm disgusted with what I've seen today, and it feels like the tide is turning and people are seeing these protests for what they really are: an opportunity for hate-filled morons to get together and intimidate people. I feel like they've completely ruined their cause just because they couldn't wait a day to protest.

Yes, but those opinions tend to be based on misogyny. So it’s quite easy to write them off as stupidity.

Misogyny?..I don't think that word means what you think it means.

I am not basing it on my friends etc. I am basing it on the media landscape, on worldwide opinion, on the millions who turned out all over the world, on polls on British opinion, on the fact that people have seen starving and blown up babies and that there is the biggest amputee population in the world and also on the fact that the UN and every single charity on the ground and genocide experts have said there is a literal GENOCIDE. Most normal people realise that the feelings and opinions of a few who are not outraged and disgusted by this are irrelevant.

So no, the tide is not turning against normal people who protest this depravity. And frankly if your feelings of discomfort are trying to dictate to others not to protest the genocide then seriously ask yourself why you are so depraved and soulless? One day you will Be ashamed of your views and if you did it publicly it will come back and haunt you.

And this post is both vitriolic and threatening and a little bit testerical propaganda-ish.

Generally the conflict has roused awful feelings against Jewish people. I’m listening to a father talk about a Dr who tweeted about supremacy etc for vulnerable patients. Really terrible stuff.

Father is Brian Leveson, Times Radio

On other threads about this topic the pro-Israeli posters have been very open in saying that they believe some human lives have more value than others.

Who said that and what did they say?

Mumsnet is genuinely one of the most extreme places on the internet/social media to be honest and the tide is very much anti Israel. Most people who are not extremely biased or quite racist can see that what Israel has done is one of the most heinous things in our lifetime - more uniquely so because our government has backed them to do it. Any kind of concept that liberal democracy type values are superior has been destroyed. I’ve seen people I would never have imagined be so anti Israel and angry at what they have seen. You’re probably looking at your own echo chamber - most people worldwide are outraged. Most people admire the bravery of Greta and the flotilla. Most people would read your post and be quite disgusted. But not on mumsnet.

So to summarise ..
Mumsnet is full of extremists and/or racists, Israel is the worst country in the world (??), it's all the UKs fault, liberal democracy is finished and everybody thinks Greta and the futilla are the bravest thing ever.....

Meh...not really, and your post sounds sinister.

It’s very unfortunate that the resources to these two groups are in direct competition. They are two very separate issues - British Jews have nothing to do with what is happening in Palestine, saying one group is more important than the other suggests the police get political with their resources.

Yes, I hope that the majority hold more nuanced positions.

Police forces should be freed up to protect the UK’s Jewish community, not diverted to protesters who will achieve nothing positive for suffering Palestinians.

Oh I don't doubt that there's widespread condemnation of Israel because what they are doing is objectively awful.

But 'everyone I know thinks Greta is brave and the flotilla is marvellous' is definitely a feature of the algorithm.

I could pop on Twitter now and find you lots of people who think that Greta is a tit and should have stuck to climate change campaigning. I could find you lots of people circulating the fact that she posted a picture of a starving Israeli hostage thinking it was a Palestinian prisoner. Lots of posts about the arrest of a Holocaust denying member of the flotilla who was arrested on arrival back in the UK.

Have you considered that MN is one of the very few places on the internet where you cannot curate what you see? Where content isn't fed to you by an algorithm to present you with stuff you agree with? Where you don't follow friends and see their content first?

People need to think before posting 'everyone on my social media agrees with me'.

That goes both ways, no?

on the CITME threads you really do see the split of peoples opinions. But the difference is, it’s about the same five posters who are incredibly pro-Israel. It’s very different posters each time who are anti-genocide.

Planning to protest on October 7th, following through after the Yom Kippur murders in Manchester, marching with faces covered….

It sure looks more like antisemitism than it does a peace protest.

Also not sure how protesting in London helps. UK has already decided to recognise Palestine as a state. What do they expect Khan or Starmer to do? What does it do other than frighten and harrass our domestic Jewish population?

I expect them to sanction Israel, put pressure on Netanyahu to stop the bombing, declare a genocide, publicly support the arrest of Netanyahu and halt all arms sales to Israel.

Where are all the anti Hamas marches.

Down with Hamas

Free the people from Hamas

Where is the strong government rhetoric to say that Palestine could be recognised as a state if Hamas are disbanded?

Instead Palestine, with its leaders are recognised as a state. I dont agree with this and think this sets up a course that will lead to more danger and warfare.

overwhelmedsinglema · 08/10/2025 07:04

@Strangerthanfictionsgenuine question, where is your collective outrage for the other genocides and horrific human rights atrocities that are happening around the world? Where is your outrage towards Hamas for exacerbating the situation and using its own people as a weapon? Where is your outrage for Egypt for not openings it borders to help the people trapped in Gaza?

user1471453601 · 08/10/2025 03:39

I don't think it's helpful to say that x did this to y, because y did such and such. Because reasoning at this level resolves nothing but does lead to more bloodshed.

So in this particular case, the horrid thing that person did in Manchester could be explained as being a reaction to the Israeli government actions in Gaza. The Israeli action in Gaza could be explained by Hammas actions on 7/10, which in turn could be explained by a reaction to "settlers" in the West bank forcibly evicting Palestiens. And on it goes.

In the end, people are dying in Gaza, Israel and Manchester ..... because?

Is it because some humans just cannot say ok, enough blood has been shed, let's forget the who started this and why. Let's concentrate on stopping it.

of course, it doesn't help that the Israeli president would likely be in jail now on corruption charges, if he wasn't President.

If a group march or don't matters not at all when you compare it to the death of someone. Albeit that someone lived in Manchester, Gazza or Isr ael.

I think there is a great bulk of people who feel something like this. They think what is happening is gross, they aren't happy with how Israel has handled things, but they also think Hamas has done a lot to create - maybe deliberately - the situation.

These people haven't been the ones being heard, it's all people who are much more strongly on one side or the other.

I think now there may be more of these moderate people inclined to speak out against those who seem to support Hamas, whereas before they maybe assumed the good intentions of those people. Whereas people's view of Israel has remained more like whatever it was before.

Yes, this was an awful mistake. A lot of moderate seemed to disbelieve the awful reports/videos etc of marchers chanting anti Semitic slogans. Hopefully no longer...

I would like to think that most people understand that the situation is incredibly complex and nuanced, and that neither side is blameless.

I would also like to believe that most people are horrified by the suffering and loss which has been experienced by innocent people on both sides of the conflict. The stories from both Jewish and Palestinian victims are heartbreaking.

We don't have to reduce everything to simple soundbites. We don't have to pick a side. We should remember our common humanity.

BewaretheIckabog · 08/10/2025 00:59

If protesters really wanted to make a difference they’d demonise both Hamas and Netanyahu but I’m hearing less about the shitty Israeli government rather than attacks on Israel overall. I wonder why that is?

SumUp · 08/10/2025 00:51

TigTails · 07/10/2025 23:30

I feel like there’s a whole other conversation here about what can people who DO want the UK government to stop arming Israel but who don’t hate Jewish people or want to cause public unrest actually do?

If the current way of voicing our views isn’t effective or is causing distress to people who aren’t to blame and who can’t take action (aka the average Jewish person living in Manchester or wherever) then what’s the alternative?

Quite.

If protesters genuinely wanted to make a difference, they would press their MP for greater investment in aid for Gaza and more substantial peacemaking strategies for resolving the conflict. Trump should not be leading on this. And yet 25% staff cuts were recently announced for the FDCO.

There should also be a conversation about diverting the UK economy away from weapons design and towards more benign ways of adding to GDP / providing skilled employment.

Not only are the protests ineffective in preventing genocide in Gaza, they are providing a fig leaf for antisemites to hide behind , creating conditions that make the UK’s Jewish community feel less safe.

Don't blame me for the facts not aligning with your post. Like I said if you are so concerned about what is happening in your country you are pretty quiet about it. You couldn't even bring yourself to comment on the awful anti Muslim attacks I highlighted which is pretty strange indeed for someone as concerned as yourself.

Like I pointed out. There are attacks on Jews daily, and on a far wider scale. I could counter also that there are lots of attacks on women. Attacks on disabled people. Attacks on middle aged white men. This post is about pro Palestinian backlash though. Not about attacks on other members of our society. Maybe you could start another post on it so this one isn’t derailed?…...

CrossChecking · 08/10/2025 00:41

But you feel strongly enough to comment on it. You don’t have to actually live here to post on MN about concerns about something you’ve read. You seem pretty vocal about the subject, and obviously concerned enough to source information and figures, so I don’t understand why you didn’t post about it at the time. It’s a bit of a cop out to say you didn’t feel it was your place to start a post on it, when here you are…...posting about it.

Edited

We’re all supposed to separate Hamas from ordinary Palestinians but Israel is a terrorist state - not the Netanyahu government but Israel as a homogeneous mas?
