People using the word gosh, or golly gosh.

I have never in real life heard anyone other than MN posters and Disney princesses use gosh. It's absolutely vile.

It can get in the bin along with moist, supper and plonk (wine).

(Lighthearted of course)

Americans absolutely love a "bloody". I was moaning about the "bloody printer" once and an American friend in the room asked me if I could say it again so she could record it.

That said I felt similarly when she said "y'all", though nothing compared to how overjoyed I felt when my French housemate actually said "ooh la la", which I'd always assumed was a stereotypical myth.

Oh, yeah, the French really do say "Oo, la laa". I love it.

Sandy483 · 07/10/2025 18:34

I say gosh and yikes sometimes. I also say fuck and twat.

Minimili · 07/10/2025 18:34

I HATE the word snack.

The worst thing is that when it comes up in a conversation or someone starts a thread on here it’s usually repeated over and over until my blood pressure goes through the roof.

“Doris was asked to buy snacks, she didn’t ask what everyone wanted so got the wrong snacks.
I sent Walter to get some better snacks but then Clive didn’t like those snacks as he prefers different snacks.
I told them all in future I wasn’t providing snacks unless they all agreed on a snack they liked”

I heard “I could care less” a few times on something my DP was watching last night. I got so irrationally angry that I said I was turning it off and he wasn’t watching any more if I heard it again 😂.

It was some reality tv programme with people in their late twenties/thirties (love is blind uk) and so annoying that I kept getting drawn in.

Every second word was “like”. Most sentences started with “literally” or “basically” with a slight American accent.
One conversation was someone saying “so yeah, like, basically…” over and over and the other person nodding.
I noticed the sentence never did get finished 😂.
(If anyone else watched it then it was when Tom had the conversation with Tash at the mixer).

There was also lots of “ohhh myyy gosh” and “a red lip” that boiled my blood but the “I could care less” was the worst.

It doesn’t make sense! I know Americans use it and so it’s another annoying phrase like “vacation” “y’all” and “mom” that are being increasingly used in the UK.

I find it reassuring that it’s not just me that gets so wound up about words, my DP says I’m irrational and doesn’t understand it at all 😂.

This isn’t a word it’s something I see and instantly I just cringe.
It’s the men going into yoga in their shorts and no socks!! I know it’s completely unreasonable and unfair and I love that men do yoga and are into strengthening and conditioning with a bit of mindfulness, I think it’s fucking brilliant.
but seeing them in their shorts and bare feet lined up going in makes them look like kids at school about to do gym and I have to turn and face the other way.
Maybe this is a really weird one but it just grosses me out a bit 🤢
And truly sorry to any men doing yoga, keep on doing it!!

I did laugh but yes I agree!

'Blimey' always makes me think of Sid James!

Melonmango70 · 07/10/2025 18:11

I say "oh my goodness", and people laugh - including me! I may use "Oh my gosh!" occasionally....😆

Doggybroc · 07/10/2025 15:14

Why is one “fake” and the other isn’t?

Yes, what is wrong with saying to a child gosh that's a big teddy bear. Oh are we fake if we don't say fuck that's a big teddy bear? Bizarre.

Gentlydoesit2 · 07/10/2025 18:01

"Ick", "vile" and "get in the bin" are worse IMO

Darner · 07/10/2025 17:59

My niece is a very successful influencer. I love her but everything she says on her TikTok grates on me. Is there a phrase book? They all say the same bloody things -

‘Gatekeeping’
‘Run don’t walk’
’I’m obsessed with/lowkey obsessed with’
‘It’s giving’
‘Main character’
‘Hot girl walk’
’Manifesting’
‘Vibing’
And every thing’s ’the best’. The best cookie, coffee, yoga class, meal…

It drives me to distraction.

AbbeyGrange · 07/10/2025 17:55

'Holibobs' is another made up word that should be banned for all eternity...

Nana4 · 07/10/2025 17:55

I’ve always blamed Bob Geldof for the decline in the English language and increase in the acceptance of swearing in general, the F word in particular.
Swearing was generally thought of as the domain of low and uneducated people, and probably all male groups, but certainly not in public.

Given that I have, this afternoon, had a conversation with my 4yr old granddaughter, who has only been at school for a month, as to why it is unacceptable for her to be looking for her “ fucking horse” I wish we still had some standards.

SonicBoomInTheRoom · 07/10/2025 17:53

Hospical (hospital) or bockle (bottle). Stop it.

gottalottodo · 07/10/2025 17:46

Yes I’m with you. It sounds like toddler speak!

The same as anyone over the age of 5 using the word 'tummy'

ToWhitToWhoo · 07/10/2025 17:48

I like gosh; my dear late dad used to say it.

Don't mind the other words on your list.

My detested words are 'holibobs',. 'famalam', 'Chrimbo', ;making memories'; and 'Happy birthday' if its said to me!

AInightingale · 07/10/2025 17:47

BauhausOfEliott · 07/10/2025 17:36

‘Panties’ is so repellent. If a man used the word ‘panties’ to me, my legs would snap shut immediately, never to part again in his presence. It’s so prissy and unsexy.

What is the most acceptable word for these...garments? I hate them all. Though I don't mind 'drawers' actually.

And 'gusset' is monstrous.

gottalottodo · 07/10/2025 17:46

Doggybroc · 07/10/2025 14:45

Personally I’m not keen on “Ick”!

Yes I’m with you. It sounds like toddler speak!

Sharptonguedwoman · 07/10/2025 17:44

augustusglupe · 07/10/2025 14:54

I’m actually with you but I wouldn’t call it vile, it does make me cringe. It’s so bloody twee.

I worked in an environment where swearing was absolutely not acceptable. I used golly and the like. A bit Enid Blyton but harmless.
if we’re talking ick then hubs, hubby, hubster, veggies can join the ick list please.

NotMeNoNo · 07/10/2025 17:43

Going on about things giving you ick is way worse, so YABU.

I think Gosh is one of those things I say occasionally but wouldn't write down. And I've never heard anyone go on about ICK in spoken conversation. Language evolves.

  • grim
  • narcissist

The very worst would be a hearty nourishing soup. Ideally consumed out of a mug held with both hands, like a giant toddler.

Yes and don't forget to make sure your jumper sleeves cover half your hands..all so bloody predictable isn't it...

CoffeeCantata · 07/10/2025 17:40

Thought of another one. I don’t like ‘brew’ for a hot brown drink. I cannot tell you why - but it really grates on me.

BunnyLake · 07/10/2025 17:39

Unorganisedchaos2 · 07/10/2025 15:57

I use gosh as a replacement for fuck, apparently it isn't appropriate to curse like a sailor once you have a small child and I couldn't think of an alternative

Fiddle dee dee? (courtesy of Scarlett O’Hara) 😁

CoffeeCantata · 07/10/2025 17:38

Shodan · 07/10/2025 17:14

Moist is a splendid word, one of my favourites. I especially like it in conjunction with the word towelette. Moist towelettes were very popular when I was young.

One word that should be banned is munch or munched. And Jamie Oliver should be prohibited from using turmeric, as he pronounces it 'chewmeric'.

Aaarrrggghh - and people who say ‘nookular’ for nuclear.

Some Americans do it. It’s so illogical. Nuclear is the adjective from the noun nucleus.

1one · 07/10/2025 17:37

I say gosh all the time and I have been known to use the occasional golly. Blummin eck and blimey.

I'm no saint but wasn't brought up to swear (or eff and jeff as my mum used to say). I wince when I hear folk say the see you next tuesday word. My manager sits at her desk effing constantly and she is a lot posher than me, but swears like a sailor! I get the 'ick' listening to her.
