To be concerned about my neighbours?

My neighbours are a young couple with a toddler. I normally seem them but I haven’t for 3 days now. All their lights and curtains hahe been drawn but their cars are still on the drive and haven’t moved. Or am I over thinking? It just seems a bit unusual. We are rural and you can’t really get to anywhere without a car, not even local shop. Also they’re not abroad or anything, as I actually spoke to the lady neighbour the other day and she said someone from the council was meant to be coming round

OP says they share a drive and they walk past her front window regularly. That's not watching, it's noticing. It also might be that she only recognised their regular patterns when they stopped (akin to only realising how busy the skies were with planes when they pretty much stopped during hard lockdown).

It was more of a joke tbh

I wouldn't be surprised if they're avoiding you because you're watching them too closely.

Whenever there is a news story about someone being found after lying dead in their home for a week, or a child killed even though everyone heard the screams or any other numer of things where you think, how didnt anyone notice, this thread explains how.

Catwalking · 08/10/2025 11:05

Maybe the neighbours went away to avoid any possibility they could be stranded without electricity during or due to the storm? We lost electricity for 20hrs, it hasn’t happened in this area for 38yrs or so.

Daftypants · 08/10/2025 09:58

I am glad you’re looking out for them .
I would definitely knock and /or ring doorbell .
Where I live we have a WhatsApp group for the street and for the estate .
Not everyone is in the groups but it means I have a way to contact neighbours .

I think the police would make a judgement on that.
It really depends....I don't have much of an idea of the comings and goings of one of my immediate neighbours so while I may note that e.g. the lights are on all night and curtains open (unusual), I wouldn't act upon it.
The other neighbour is an elderly women living on her own, very, very set in her ways. I know what time of day it is by her actions - calling the cat in for the evening, lights all off as she's gone to bed, car out 2 times a week for a few hours, hearing normal noises through the wall. An absence of that would cause me concern and I would act upon it.

Oh, I would definitely check in on an elderly or lone disabled neighbour. No question.

I don’t think you have come across as a nosy neighbour at all OP.
I am relieved you don’t now need to take any further action, and all is well.
Who can say when any one of us may have to rely on the observances or care of neighbours to help us.

I fully agree.

Hopefully you will see the woman and child today too @Lynn981

Sorry, * I would not say I am a nosy neighbour. Not would! 😂

Ha ha, Freudian slip? You’re a nosey neighbour in the right way, you notice normal patterns and worry if they change. You’re welcome to move to my street.

MNdrama · 08/10/2025 02:36

You clearly are a nosy neighbour

How nasty are you? The OP seems like a caring neighbour to me

AInightingale · 08/10/2025 08:56

Maybe you should ask for the thread to be taken down OP once you've established all is definitely ok. In case the mother sees it!

So it appears they are back. I have seen the male walking the dog this evening, did not see the lady and the little one though.

can I just point out, I would say I am a nosy neighbour. I just see them walking past my window regularly. Usually together at the same time of the day walking the dog. We also have a shared drive way so I obviously see when their cars are there

I was just going to say "fabulous for admitting it - aren't we all in our own ways" but saw you then updated it 😂

Being aware of unusual behaviour and caring about it doesn't make anyone a nosy neighbour though. It makes you a thoughtful person

So, if you go away for a few days and don’t tell your neighbours would you expect them to call the police because they haven’t seen you?

if it was ten days or a couple of weeks I might understand but three days?

I think the police would make a judgement on that.

I think OP’s heart was in the right place, but perhaps too prematurely. The thing is, even if they had have succumbed to death by carbon monoxide or murder or a gas leak or a horrendous gardening incident, then they’d all be dead anyway. And 3 days isn’t weird. Over 2 weeks maybe.

You sound like a kind and caring neighbour! I am glad everything is alright.

WIcurious · 08/10/2025 07:45

sunflowersintheday · 07/10/2025 16:23

Don't you like to open them in the morning, and let the sunshine in? Greet the day? Open the windows?.

I get up before my husband so leave the bedroom ones closed.

The ones in the living room are never closed and I don’t have any anywhere else. And I don’t believe I’ve ever ‘greeted the day’ tbh.

Can you imagine the amount of phone calls to police and requests for welfare checks on people who simply left their home for a few days without fully informing their neighbours first? 😬😬😬

Initially I thought 'oh how refreshing for an OP to come back and really reflect and have self awareness' but it turns out it was a typo 😬 OP I say this very kindly and gently but maybe this whole saga will make you reflect on things?

caramac04 · 08/10/2025 07:07

Glad all seems well OP.
For those who think some of us jumped to dramatic scenarios; this week I read of a situation where a young mother died of a drugs overdose. Her baby was strapped in a car seat and her toddler had tried to feed the baby with egg and egg shells. Tragically the baby also died before anyone had checked and gained access to the house. The toddler survived.

Zanatdy · 08/10/2025 07:02

When you are at home a lot and have a living room window looking out onto the street, of course you notice people’s comings and goings and times they are out / home. Most people have routine’s, I tend to leave and return home the same times. I walk the dog the same times, within a 5-10 min slot as I like routine. Perfectly normal if neighbours know my routine. Doesn’t make them nosey.

Greysowhat · 08/10/2025 06:59

The male and the lady ! 😅

WeeGeeBored · 08/10/2025 06:27

RosyDaysAhead · 07/10/2025 20:58

Contact the police on 101 and ask them to do a welfare check

I think if I was on the end of that call I would suggest a welfare check on the op because they seem to be suffering with anxiety.

WeeGeeBored · 08/10/2025 06:25

Ap42 · 07/10/2025 21:35

You could call the police and report your concerns. They maybe able to carry out a welfare visit.
