To ask is a 5bed house is a waste in these circumstances

Young couple who have 2dc half the time (and no plans for any more!)…5bed house…is it a waste? YABU=yes ridiculous YANBU=no, each to their own.

We live in a five bed.
One room is my library/wfh office. One is a music room. The three remaining rooms are in use as bedrooms although DS1 has left home and DS2 is at Uni. So they both have rooms to come back to and we also have regularly used both rooms for guests.
I'd find a set of permanently unused bedrooms a bit odd though.

Icreatedausernameyippee · 04/10/2025 20:26

If they can afford it and will enjoy it it's not a waste.

almondflake · 04/10/2025 20:23

We have a 4 bed and are creating more space using the kitchen and conservatory, we enjoy all the space we have and it really came in handy when our eldest daughter and granddaughter moved in after a break up , she didn’t have to worry about where to live at a moment’s notice .
if they can afford it and want it , why not ?

Betty1625 · 04/10/2025 20:23

Is op the parent of the said 2 children that will live in the massive house part time??
I wouldn't want to live in a house too big for my family purely due to bills, but might suit some ppl better with view of expanding family, wfh, or parents moving in

Ruthietuthie · 04/10/2025 20:22

We have six bedrooms in a four storey house, with two adults and one child. We have a guest room, an office each for me and DH, plus a playroom. If you can afford it and like the space, why not. I work from home quite a lot and particularly like having an office where I can shut the door and walk away. Previously, my office was also the guest room, where I slept when I was co-sleeping with my child or if my tossing and turning was keeping my husband awake (he is a very light sleeper and, if woken, struggles to get back to sleep). I like having these spaces separate now. We would struggle with a smaller house.

BatchCookBabe · 04/10/2025 20:20

You sound jellus @Chickenshwarmamarma ! Grin

People can have as many bedrooms as they want. It's up to them. My older DC has just her and her DP in a 4 bed house, with 3 reception rooms, a nice bathroom, a study, a conservatory, a cellar, a dining room, a utility room, and a large kitchen. Why? Because they can afford it, and it's what they want.

Obviously if it's social housing, a 5 bed for a couple who have 2 children just half the week would be batshit, and a 2 bed would do. But if they've bought it
it's nothing to do with anyone else.

Puzzled as to why two thirds of people think YANBU, but most comments think YABU. Baffling! Confused

I am laughing at the competitive bedrooms oneupmanship on here though. One poster claims to have a 7 bedroom house, so another poster trumped it with a claim of an 8 bedroom house. 😆

Anyone got a 9 bed??? Come on! 😂

clipboardz · 04/10/2025 20:17

@cadburyegg I agree, my siblings and I all had help onto the ladder.

youalright · 04/10/2025 20:17

I wouldn't like it as it's more to heat and clean and I'd be scared to be on my own in it at night. But some people love spare rooms for things like art, sewing, gaming etc so it depends what you like

HPFA · 04/10/2025 20:17

It's their choice so if they can afford it its up to them.

I guess Id be annoyed if they ever moaned about how poor they were or protested about nearby housing proposals.

In a very nice village near me I once saw a beautiful big thatched cottage with a poster stuck up protesting a new housing estate about two miles away. I had hard work not to knock on the door and tell them not to be so bloody selfish.

cadburyegg · 04/10/2025 20:14

Unpopular opinion on here but I do judge people living in huge houses when their adult children are desperately saving to get on the property ladder but can’t afford to. Unfortunately it’s very expensive just to move so it has to be a significant downsize to make it worthwhile.

I’m in a 3 bed but when my children leave home, if they need a house deposit I will downsize and help them if I can.

Other than that no, people should live wherever they like. My neighbours live in a 3 bed and have no kids. My mum lives in a 4 bed alone. Bedrooms don’t have to be used just for sleeping. The rise of home working means rooms are also needed to work in.

clipboardz · 04/10/2025 20:14

And their house is closer to 4000 sq ft. Amazing to grow up in but I don't think I would ever go over 3000 sq ft but unlikely I will ever be able to afford either 😆

Mid 30’s…young enough

You're the other parent (or the grandparent) of the kids aren't you. In a much smaller house.

TralalaTralalee · 04/10/2025 20:12

We have an 8 bed for a family of 4, suits us and we can afford it so I’d be a bit confused/nonplussed if anybody in my life started complaining it was a waste. Why are you asking?

MyElatedUmberFinch · 04/10/2025 20:11

Waste of what?

clipboardz · 04/10/2025 20:09

Boomers aren't well loved by most 😆 but not sure what that has to do with anything.

My parents only started struggling with their house size in their late 70s.

FlippyKiYayFlippyFlipper · 04/10/2025 20:09

A waste of what exactly? I don’t really understand what you’re asking.

moose17 · 04/10/2025 20:09

We have 5 bed house spread over 2800 square-foot with just one dc but that’s got to do with anyone else.

@AngelinaFibres 60 isn't that elderly

It's elderly on mumsnet. My husband is a boomer and that's absolutely hated on here

aster10 · 04/10/2025 20:06

Are you talking about the Duke and the Duchess of Sussex? 😁

Luna6 · 04/10/2025 20:05

What business is it if yours? If they can afford it then why not.

clipboardz · 04/10/2025 20:04

ResusciAnnie · 04/10/2025 19:29

So it’s not you then - so why do you care if it’s some sort of ‘waste’?

It’s not a waste, the house isn’t going to run out. WFH you say - 1 office each then perhaps. 1 bedroom for each child. Master. Spare room. Dressing room. Music room. So many options.

(Also thinking can they really be that young if they already have a kid each/one of them has 2, with custody arrangements, and the mean to buy a 5 bed 😄)

I say live as you like. It is your money. Mansions would not exist if all the rich people thought they cannot manage many rooms. So up to you, really. How do you feel? What do you want to do in the rooms? Can you become an artist, etc??

childofthe607080s · 04/10/2025 18:58

On the one hand- their money their choice

howwver if it were an elderly couldn’t living in a 5 bed there would be mutterings on here about taking family homes from people who need them and how they should downsize

We are 60 and 63 and have been retired since we were 55. We have a 5 bedroomed house for just 2 of us. We have no mortgage. One bedroom is an office, one is a fully fitted out gym, one is a room with twin beds for our grandchildren who sleep over a lot . We have a bedroom and there is another double for guests. We have 2 living rooms downstairs, a large kitchen/ diner and a big conservatory. We are living the dream. We look after our grandchildren here every Monday and have space inside and outside for them to have any toy they want.I was a single parent when my children were small and our house was 2 up 2 down and a grotty bathroom. If you can afford space buy it, it's fabulous.

Shufflebumnessie · 04/10/2025 19:59

If they're able to comfortably pay the mortgage and maintain the property then why does it matter how many people/bedrooms there are?
