Young couple who have 2dc half the time (and no plans for any more!)…5bed house…is it a waste? YABU=yes ridiculous YANBU=no, each to their own.

I think as long as all the people in big houses with multiple spare bedrooms dont object to new housing developments near them, fine. I'm my experience, they are the first to object though.
I went to a talk a while ago about a housing research project a university did. They said that in theory we don't need to build a single new house in the UK, there are more than enough bedrooms in the existing housing stock for everyone.

Edited

I bought in a conservation area so there are minimal new housing developments near me. Not a particular choice, the house I liked happened to be in that area.
And I fail to see the relevance of the “number of bedrooms” in the UK. There are numerous threads on here that demonstrate very clearly that people in social housing refuse to down size and give up any “spare” bedrooms. Understandable for many reasons, the most common being because there often isn’t anywhere suitable for them to downsize to. How on earth do you think owner occupiers could be forced to do that? The number of bedrooms in the UK is irrelevant.

I am single and bought my dream four bed house a few years ago. I love it. I work really hard and this is my reward. I have a home office and a big dressing room and a large guest bedroom. A beautiful nature garden.

i have found some people make comments - particularly men of a certain age. I have never need married and bought this with my own money. It’s just jealousy and sexism. I love it 😂🤣.

some sad middle aged neighbour commented on me spending my ex husbands money when I put an extension on the house.

I'd have been so tempted to tell your neighbour that you needed something to disguise where you'd buried 5 former husbands. And add there's space for one or two more bodies, so do they fancy nipping down the registry office with you?

Sorry, I removed the post by accident and forgot about it. I’ve been so busy. I am the parent in the 5bed. I have had a few comments (one from ex, another from a friend and another from an aunt)
Ex basically said I had wasted my money on a 5 bed for I only have 2 dc half the week.
friend basically said the same.
Aunt said(and I quote) “was that really necessary, I know several families with more dc who have a better need for it…I’m sure the family you outbid are struggling to find another much needed 5 bed! They have 4 dc who need space” she knew them and was pissed off I suppose.

Anyway, I’m glad everyone agrees and it’s not wasteful! It’s our home and we need the space we use 3 bedrooms as bedrooms, one as an office and the other hasn’t been decided yet.

Is this 5 bed house a council / social accommodation?
If not, and by outbid means you bought it - really not yheir business. Especially wrong fir your own aunt to comment like she did

No we bought it.

I would love a 5 bed house and we would only have one child 🤣

Our room
Child’s room
Spare room; I would LOVE to be able to invite people to stay over.
Office
Gym (well space for a treadmill, bike and yoga mat would do me)

The thing is though, the people in the OP's post don't have multiple spare rooms. They have one, and one of them works from home two days a week.

Two children who are there half the time having bedrooms is hardly ten bedrooms lying empty the majority of the year.

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 11/10/2025 09:45

@Chickenshwarmamarmaare you going to come back to this thread and explain what this is actually about?

as far as I can tell, they have a bedroom for them, a bedroom each for the 2 dcs (who do stay with them sometimes), they can use one as an office for the person who works from home and one spare /guest room.

To me this doesn’t sound excessive. We can’t afford anything that big in this area but doesn’t seem out of the normal range of the sort of house I’d expect people in that situation to buy.

TheCurious0range · 11/10/2025 09:17

We live in a 3 bed but are saving to convert the attic into another 2 rooms and another bathroom , we only have one DC. We want one bedroom for us , one for ds, a guest room, I want a dedicated home office back which will double as a hobby room for DH because he has far too much stuff, the fifth will be a second room in the attic which will be a play/hang out/homework space for ds with a sofa bed for when his friends stay. He will have the top floor with this room, his bedroom and own bathroom.
If they can afford it and plan to stay long term what's the issue?

Floranan · 11/10/2025 09:08

3 years ago we downsized to a 5bed bungalow, there’s 3 of us at home now.

DH and I have our own bedroom and dd has the third the 4th is for my grandchildren who often stay most weeks.

we also have a kitchen/dinner , dinning room, living room, family bathroom and wc, all bedrooms have an en-suite, 2 conservatories, craft room, study, and a double garage for DH’s workshop. 2 sheds and a greenhouse outside. The study and the craft room both have sofa beds for when the adult DC stay as does the smaller conservatory .

we downsized from a 7 bedroom have 5 children, and have found it really difficult to adjust. Is this house to big for 3 - probably, but we like our space and when everyone visits we need the room, tbh one of the big selling facts was the size of the living room in this place it’s big enough for 2 3 seat sofas and 2 armchairs with plenty of room fir the children to play.

I consider the house to be an investment and as we are getting older it safe guards our money if either of us needs care.

Oh don’t encourage them @oviraptor21
They are seriously childish and pathetic.

Actually, no.

If you're ok with men trampling all over your voice, then that's your call.

It's not acceptable to me and I will not allow that behaviour towards me, on what is known as a women's forum (that, for inclusion, has it's own Dadsnet section).

So no, it's not "childish and pathetic" to stand up to men that do this.

ARichtGoodDram · 11/10/2025 08:51

So four bedrooms for four people and an office for the person who works from home two days a week. It's hardly a mansion with a tonne of unused rooms...

QueenOfCastille · 11/10/2025 08:46

We have a 5 bed house. It’s an old Victorian one, and is huge, awkward, draughty, cold, hard to maintain, and I love it. It has been brilliant for hosting parties, doing big family Christmases, and working from home.

We will sell it when the children leave home, though. It will be far too big for two of us.

oviraptor21 · 11/10/2025 08:35

I think you'll find you did that.

Yet another man trampling all over Mumsnet.

Lectei · 11/10/2025 07:50

I live in a 4 bed house with no kids. Just me and DH. I’ve turned one bedroom into a dressing room, one into a guest bedroom which is used once in a blue moon and the other is just full of junk 😂 still, I love the house and have no intentions of moving

No, no, that's your inability to read the words written down and announcing that because you couldn't comprehend, it made no sense. Then followed various nonsense you came out with, then tried to backpedal...

So, sorry, I can't put that into your beloved emojis.

I have a 5-bed and no children at home. My daughter comes home in the uni holidays. I like to have two bedrooms for me and my husband as he snores, so I kick him out when he’s too annoying. The other two bedrooms are used as offices as we both work mainly from home. Could actually do with a dedicated guest room, but since we don’t often have guests I’d make do having my husband in my bed :-)

UnlimitedBacon · 10/10/2025 21:57

If they can afford the house and you are not expected to chip in, I can’t understand why you’d feel you had any say in the decision?

Maybe so, but how do you share them out?
Moving people to smaller social/rented accommodation is one thing, but you can hardly forcibly sell people’s private property just because they have a spare bedroom.
