Dip kiss at weddings

As far as I'm concerned this "dip kiss" signifies dominance to the wife to be submissive. I hate it and so do a lot of photographers

It’s just one of the naff wedding trends around, like the ‘first look’ and ‘mid aisle kiss’. All the same - yawn.

LadyNorthStar · 04/10/2025 20:41

I went to a wedding where they tried to do this after the first dance. Something went wrong and the groom dropped her, the bride ended up on the floor. It was really awkward and embarrassing.

I don’t think my DH would know how to do this either. Well there’s no chance trying it now after 25 years and a bad back!

Sunshineandgrapefruit · 04/10/2025 20:28

I don't know anyone who had this at their wedding. Don't do it if it bothers you ( or dip him if you want to make a point).

CharlieKirkRIP · 04/10/2025 20:06

I’ve never heard of a dip kiss and thought it must be something to do with being tipsy and hanging around too long at the buffet table.

What’s a dip kiss?

I was wondering that as well.

JLou08 · 04/10/2025 19:31

I take more of an issue with the bride being given away by their father but each to their own. Generally weddings are just for show rather than a true reflection of the relationship. I'm sure most couples who do the dip kiss are equal and most women who are given away aren't treated like the property of their father or husband.

hotpot444 · 04/10/2025 19:27

I like it because it reminds me of the time I was lovely and slim and DH could not only hold me in a dip kiss he also carried me over the threshold. I think his back may break if he tried that these days.

SwallowsandAmazonians · 04/10/2025 19:26

Hilarious viewpoint, each to their own.

We did it at the end of our wedding dance which wasn't rehearsed and the dip was completely spontaneous as far as I'm aware. It was fun! My husband is a lot bigger/stronger than me so that was probably helpful. It's one of my favourite photos from the day and it captures how much fun we were having in the moment.

Hate is a very strong emotion for something so innocuous 🤣

Insidemyownhead · 04/10/2025 19:19

Wedding planner of 10 years here, yes there has been a rising trend in the dip kiss…. But I’ve yet to speak to a photographer who hates it, and I assure you any couple I’ve worked with, the woman is most definitely not the one being dominated.
Sounds like a you problem.

Simonjt · 04/10/2025 19:19

We tried at home once as a joke, I put my back out and dropped him, if you want awkward and performative we high fived and then bro hugged at our wedding.

Tigerthatcametobrunch · 04/10/2025 19:17

If I thought my photographer was judging or hated any aspect of my wedding I'd be appalled I'd hired someone so unprofessional. Of course they're entitled to their opinions, but I don't want to hear them

Oneborneverydecade · 04/10/2025 19:15

I dipped my husband for a kiss when we married 11 years ago. It's a fun photo.
I hadn't read into it tbh

OrwellianTimes · 04/10/2025 19:14

It’s an old fashioned silver screen styled romantic gesture, noting to do with submission or dominance. Looks cute or tacky depending on your opinion. No deeper meaning.

if you want to be a big feminist and pick apart wedding traditions start with cutting the cake, not a kiss.

Uricon2 · 04/10/2025 19:13

I'd have felt a total fool doing that in a small office with our two witnesses!

Each to their own though, I don't think it is as deep as you imply OP.

CarpetKnees · 04/10/2025 19:11

5foot5 · 04/10/2025 18:13

Oh I have seen the photo now. I don't think I have seen anyone do that in real life, only in films. I personally think it looks a bit silly but I wouldn't read anymore in to it.

Risky too unless you are both in good shape. The potential for a humiliating fall or someone putting their back out is surely quite high.

Edited

This is my thinking, too.

BruFord · 04/10/2025 19:04

My DH does it regularly to me in the kitchen, it’s an ongoing joke between us. 😂

Don’t take it so seriously, OP, it’s just a silly pose.

caringcarer · 04/10/2025 19:02

I'd be terrified my DH might drop me on my back. It's occasionally done at the end of the first dance.

Soonenough · 04/10/2025 19:01

I think it looks stupid and contrived . But that's OK because who cares what I think . If a couple want to do it , let them.

Halloweengaul · 04/10/2025 18:57

Each to there own. Not for me my poor back wouldn't be able to cope with that. I'd be in agony for days after.

EmeraldShamrock000 · 04/10/2025 18:54

It's not that deep.

Bleachedlevis · 04/10/2025 18:51

FrangipaniBlue · 04/10/2025 17:59

What’s a dip kiss?

Yes. What IS it?

SummerEve · 04/10/2025 18:51

Have a day off, will you?

steff13 · 04/10/2025 18:49

I have never given it a second thought and now that I've taken a moment to do so I have realized that it falls under the very large umbrella of things that are not my business.

If you don't like it, don't have it at your wedding.
