11 million immigrants since 2000. When I

Sorry, it’s another immigration one.

I always see immigration discussed in terms of race, religion, who may or may not be a good fit for the UK, whether it’s by small boats - to be honest, this is not the biggest worry for me.

The biggest worry is the sheer increase in our population and how many people this country can reasonably accommodate. We are now 8th in Europe for population density - only behind Belgium and the Netherlands, and a handful of places like Vatican City and the Channel Islands. At present we have net migration of around 500,000 a year.

I’m worried that the key issues of overpopulation are being overlooked to make this conversation all about race. What about our pollution levels, wildlife habitats, flood risk, food security, infrastructure? Will this eventually be a polluted city state country? It seems to be heading that way.

Posters always say we need immigration, but we have already welcome 11 million since 2000. If that still isn’t enough; what is? Or do we just keep going?

Of course we can build more infrastructure. We could easily build roads and railways. The will just isn't there

Easily, eh? Really?

Christ on a bike. This is so daft I am actually lost for words.

I honestly don’t think that’s the case. Go on any post on immigration on here and the figures wildly differ depending on who is posting. People really aren’t going to see one post and make decisions based on that. I never take figures from MN. It’s hardly a reliable source is it?

Oh ok just going to make a post about the 44 million immigrants that have moved here since 2015 brb

ViciousCurrentBun · 04/10/2025 10:22

@CatchingtheCat it will take some years to adjust, plus it is very regional. Overall it means is if you are in a poorer region you are more likely to die sooner. The gap is 3 years between the South East and North East.

Bumblebee72 · 04/10/2025 10:21

BallerinaRadio · 04/10/2025 10:17

And all those 11 million people were immigrants? No other factors just 11 million immigrants coming over?

You understand the government publish all these numbers. 16m people have migrated to the UK since 2000.

BallerinaRadio · 04/10/2025 10:13

They do though. They absolutely do this is the problem. Someone comes on here sees this and now they think 11 million immigrants have come over and they then spread this figure.

This post is absolutely a problem.

Agree a conversation needs to be had without fear of being accused of racism. Apparently in the years 1980-2000 approx 1.65m people immigrated to the UK; and since 2000 it is 11.4m (as OP mentions, and per Oxfords Immigration observatory). I’m afraid this is unsustainable.

I am the adopted grandaughter of asylum seekers who were granted leave to stay in the late 70s, after the fall of the Shah (legal immigrants as my grandfather was stationed at the Iranian embassy at the time), so for me this discussion is not about race. It’s about affordability: funding the NHS, schools, falling academic standards in over populated classrooms, underfunded universities relying on overseas students to keep them afloat because the Govt just doesn’t have any more money, it’s the predicted that £15bn that is being spent on current immigrants in 2025/26 (up from 4.5bn in 2019 acc to BBC reports and ONS stats), money that should be going into the NHS and education.

If we are having to look at raising taxes, how we spend government money and trying to work out whether we can afford to underwrite state pensions and the benefit system or provide more social housing, we have to do so from a position of ‘can we actually afford this’? Surely the government’s priority should be its actual citizens. Being able to support and help non-citizens has to be a secondary objective based on whether we have the resources left to help.

It's simply too many. End off. Like a party in a small semi and hundreds of uninvited folk arrive. Trouble.

the birth rate has been falling, yes people are living longer but a sizable proportion will be immigration

It's pointless having the argument about figures. The British population has increased by over 10 million in the past 25 years. This is a fact.

One school of thought is saying: it is what it is, refugees are running away from something, e.g. war, instability, lack of resources.

Another school of thought is saying: if we keep letting people into Britain, then we're going to run out of resources ourselves.

This is made more complicated by various grifters weaponising the issue and spreading misinformation on both sides of the argument, e.g. refusing to accept interference in other countries combined with climate change has created desperate conditions, therefore, millions of refugees, and refusing to accept that many British people are really struggling themselves even though they're working hard and doing their level best to provide. Put simply, both sets of 'victims' of the current system are blaming the other lot for their problems.

This is working as intended. Get the buggers to fight amongst themselves so they don't make any demands of us.

You don't like some migrant staying in a 4 star hotel while claiming asylum, tax the rich and make foreign aid work.

Here's some statistics for you, in 2000 corporation tax was 30%, by 2017 it had been slashed to 19%. In 2000 net migration was 223,000, by 2022 it was 448,000. You do the math.

BatchCookBabe · 04/10/2025 10:18

Come on @Uggbootsforever this can't be right. You have a right to be concerned about how many people come across to the UK and claim asylum, and want to be put up in hotels, and cost the taxpayer money, whilst having values that don't align with our own one single iota.

But the population of the UK has increased by 10 million since the year 2000 in total, so how on earth can there be 11 million immigrants? Confused Quite a number of the 10 million would not be immigrants, so it's very likely to be nowhere near 10 or 11 million.

I agree that the UK cannot keep wilfully taking more people in and that we have our own issues, and poor, and vulnerable people who need to be taken care of... And the housing list runs into millions of people waiting for social housing, but you've ruined your argument by quoting clearly incorrect figures.

I haven't seen you quote a direct link to your 11 million immigrants claim that you say you saw on the ONS website. That's probably because it's not there. Because that figure cannot be correct.

How long do you think it takes to actually build a railway or build roads? Years. The council here have just completed creating a small roundabout on a busy road. 5 years after starting it. And railway companies take months just to repair a line. God only knows how long it will take them to build an entire line or create a road. I think we’re probably talking decades.

Immigration is controllable. Or are you suggesting rather than focusing on the controllable bit we should start controlling life expectancy and the number of deaths, by most sane people that is seen a dystopian step that governments shouldn't ever consider (withdraw medical introversions for over 70 etc)

Edited

I didn't make any suggestions. I'm just pointing out to OP that the thread is 100% about immigration, despite the backtracking.

It’s the swan eating migrants that I worry about… how long before they start on the pets??? Eh?eh?

This post is absolutely a problem.

I just googled it, AI said 11.4 million immigrants estimated to uk since 2000.

BallerinaRadio · 04/10/2025 10:17

Bumblebee72 · 04/10/2025 10:16

Let me google that for you.

ONS says population of the UK ins 2000 was 58,886,100 and in 2024 it was 69,281,437. The official number to mid 2024 was 10.4m, plus the increase in the last year suggest 11m is about right.

But it's not true! Jesus fucking Christ it's not subjective it's just wrong! I feel like I'm banging my head against a wall

Given I have provided you with the evidence. What your actual thoughts on the subject now that you know that the population growths is clearly materially different to what you had been lead to believe before?

AlecTrevelyan006 · 04/10/2025 10:17

SamVan · 04/10/2025 10:02

there’s nothing wrong with immigration - uk needs more people to keep its economy going. The question is getting the right people who are going to contribute to society and providing them jobs and ways to do so. This country is too focused on old pensioners that everything else has fallen by the wayside.

I don't think anyone can say 'there’s nothing wrong with immigration'. There are upsides and downsides to everything in life. The important thing is to weight up both the advantages and disadvantages before deciding whether to pursue or continue with something.

With what? The idea that someone can work out a figure. They can.

And you think that whole 11 million is immigrants? I think you've had a bit of a mare here and should probably delete this post

Well the birth rate is falling, yes people are living longer but it is likely a substantial part of that growth has come from net migration. Migration and lack of integration is a massive issue for this country. We do not have the resources to cope, it is diluting the British culture. Multiculturalism is a massive issue

Donttellempike · 04/10/2025 10:16

Livelovebehappy · 04/10/2025 10:08

There are many posts on MN where the facts and figures and content are not spot on. People can challenge them on the information, then people will read and take into account the alternative take from others. I think people generally are intelligent enough to do their own fact finding.

If only that were true. 😵‍💫

The ONS says 11 million immigrants have entered the UK since 2000?

You're the one publicly claiming this as fact can you show your source or some evidence?

Let me google that for you.
