Husband gave me inappropriate birthday present in front of MIL

AIBU to suggest that knowingly allowing me to open skimpy lingerie in front of my MIL was a big no no by my Husband? I have never wished the ground would open up and swallow me like I did with this. It’s three days on and I am still cringing. He hasn’t even acknowledged this and just says she isn’t a prude and knows what happens in relationships!

I love it when DH buys me nice underwear. He tends to buy me a brand he knows I love but find too extravagant to spend money on - it’s nice treat.

I don’t have an issue with him seeing me as a ‘sex object’ or as I see it, someone he finds sexy. Sex is a huge part of our relationship and I want it to continue to be. He doesn’t need or demand I wear sexy underwear but it’s nice to have variety.

He knows not to give me the present in front of anyone though!

toomuchfaff · 04/10/2025 13:45

I'd be more concerned he'd bought me a gift for himself. Does he make it known in company that he views you as a sex object often?

How very crass, he might as well bought you a season ticket for his football team. Did you ask him where your present was?

ick...

Not only does he dismiss your emotion about the event... but he bought you skimpy lingerie AND let you open the gift in company - he has no respect for you OR his mother. Either that or he was intending to embarrass you.

I'd be making constant reference to his mother and the skimpy lingerie, asking if he could imagine her wearing them, how would she look in them etc. Id definitely never wear them, and if think my vagina would clamp shut.

Id be re-evaluating him and my relationship

Househassles · 03/10/2025 22:07

He needs to acknowledge that you are upset about this, and care about that because he loves and cares about you - even if he thinks he would not have been bothered if the situation had been reversed (which it can't fully be, because the cultural baggage around male and female sexuality is so different). If he's refusing to communicate, he's wrong.

Whereismyfleeceblanket · 03/10/2025 22:06

Put it in over your clothes next time mil visits...
And buy dh a red leather thong for Christmas and make him open it in full view of his dps...

cakeisallyouneed · 03/10/2025 22:04

Butt plugs for him to open in front of everyone on Christmas Day then.

It sounds like he might fancy his mother? Has anything else suggested this? Some psychologists think this is likely. He might want to associate sex with her.

😂

Bloody hell. Do men still buy women sexy underwear 😂.

  1. That's a present for him, not for you
  2. Are we still in the 80's?
  3. Why did he want you to open it in front of his mum. Seems odd don't you think?

I'm sure I'll get flamed for this opinion and get told women like to dress up sexy for their men etc., but honestly, if my husband bought me any kind of underwear for my birthday, well he'd be taking it straight back. Luckily he wouldn't as his gifts are more thoughtful.

I agree with you. Reminds me of seedy old men like Benny Hill chasing a woman in suspenders.

Redheadedstepchild · 03/10/2025 18:38

Now - if your mother in law had bought you sexy lingerie to open in front of your husband, THAT would be concerning.

Wait till he sees the present you give him in front of Mummy! Start planning now.

It’s an all in one thing. Clearly to be worn in one place and one place only and that’s the bedroom

I still don’t see the need for you to have been so embarrassed.

SquishyGloopyBum · 03/10/2025 18:25

I’d ask him to send it back - it’s not a present for you but for him.

I'd happily wear it for my man. Nothing wrong in some nice underwear

whistlesandbells · 03/10/2025 18:32

In the bin…and the “lingerie”.
What a thoughtless thing to do.

Don't forewarn him. Just start talking about his mum when you're getting down to business. Muse aloud about whether she might have some like it and that it would be nice to tell his dad where he got them so she can have a similar lovely surprise....
""I wonder if Mary can spread her legs as wide as this .." "Does she shave down there do you know dear because she's going to need to for these otherwise it ruins the line...."

This!!!! Perfect response 👌🏻

i would be asking him to return it

i couldn’t wear it knowing she has seen it!

I don’t think lingerie is returnable but I agree with you.

Ask him how he expects to get any action whilst your wearing them when all they will make you think of is his mother! 😂

@Catlover11 so, in effect, he bought a present for himself? I wouldnt wear it all then!

SquishyGloopyBum · 03/10/2025 18:25

gingercat02 · 03/10/2025 18:24

Unless it's crotchless with nipple tassels is it not just underwear? His intentions might be different but so what. Still cringing is a bit much

FOJN · 03/10/2025 18:23

Put it on, wait till he compliments you and then casually mention you thought MIL looked a bit jealous and maybe he should buy her some for Christmas.

Hankunamatata · 03/10/2025 18:21

Oh ick

I really don’t see the problem. It wouldn’t have bothered me in the slightest if my mother in law had been there if I’d been given some nice underwear to open. To still be worrying about this three days later is something of an over reaction! 😆😆
