Colleague sent me message by mistake

Our team work remotely but we get together quarterly in person. Yesterday was a meeting in the office in the morning followed by a social so it was casual dress.

I was messaging a colleague earlier back and forth about work matters and he sent something really random and then instantly deleted it but I saw it pop up as a notification so read it.

It said ‘she knew what she was doing in those leggings’ with a sweat emoji.

Now I was the only one wearing leggings yesterday so it was definitely about me. This was at about 3.30 today and I finished at 4 so nothing more was said and I expect my colleague thinks he deleted it before I saw it.

Would you say something if you were me or pretend/forget I ever saw it?

Honestly I don't see what all the fuss is about.

I would have read the message, been briefly quietly flattered then forgotten all about it. If I was friends with him I might have asked him verbally "what am I doing in these leggings?" to embarrass him.

Either way this would take up zero space in head.

Then don't look 👍 clothes are clothes. She got dressed. Your sexual feelings aren't anyone else's problem

I’m a teacher. Glad to know the parents will be fully accepting when I arrive to class, or the school trip in a pair of scrunch leggings.

Come on. Some clothes are not appropriate for work.

What bothers me more about the message is the "she knew what she was doing..." part, like OP was just wearing those leggings to make herself attractive to colleagues?

This whole thing is a non issue. OP got the reaction she was looking for. She says herself she has a nice arse, unlike her colleagues, and her husband likes how she looks when she wears said leggings. So she’s dressing to accentuate her nice arse (not saying she isn’t within her rights to do so) but then complains that her colleague mentioned it saying she ‘knew what she was doing’. When in actual fact she dressed that way for a meeting knowing that those types of leggings draw attention to your arse, then got angry because someone noticed it. They don’t tend to look good on anyone no matter how good your body is because it looks like you have a permanent wedgie. And you know her colleagues are fat and can’t possibly wear leggings so who else could they be talking about.

Not appropriate attire for any kind of meeting in any kind of business on the planet. Wears clothes to get attention then complains about the attention. No one wants to see your arse regardless of how lovely it apparently is !

People are so uptight. It’s not a big deal.

It may come as a shock but you’re not walking around the world invisible and other people aren’t cardboard cutouts with no minds. You see them, they see you.

Winter42 · 03/10/2025 18:32

Scrunch bum leggings are literally designed to show off your arse so his comment was correct - you knew this when you bought them and chose to wear them. You can't really feign offense at someone noticing your bum in trousers designed to show off your bum.

It was still a pervy unnecessary comment for your colleague to make though.

My take home is.... You shouldn't really be wearing them in the office, but also your colleagues should not be making any sort if sexual comments towards you in the office either.

Yeah this really.

PinkingScissors · 03/10/2025 22:06

The message was inappropriate, but it sounds like your clothing was too. I reckon the inappropriate message was spot on.

I’m crying laughing at some of these posts - thank you, OP, for this gem of a thread on a Friday night!

Scrunch leggings are the below-the-waist equivalent of wandering around the office wearing a Wonderbra, OP! They are designed purely to be sexually provocative, and I’m afraid that I, too, think you knew exactly what you were doing…

With respect to my colleagues, and I love most of the ladies dearly. But the average size is probably 16, so I don’t think leggings feature too prominently in their wardrobe!

Nothing respectful about that comment!

This. Isn’t. The. Clever. Comment. You. Thought. It. Was.

You're the one that can't understand simple concepts but okay 😂

DonnyBurrito · 03/10/2025 21:45

Oh yeah I DEFINITELY said that, and you are so within your rights to say anyone who doesn't think accidentally messaging something NOT INTENDED TO HARASS AT ALL (because it was meant for someone else) is a crime, are horny and stupid teenagers who just need you to help them understand the adult world 🥹

No one should ever be making comments about their colleagues bodies. I truly don't know how to explain this in a more simple way for you

FuckKnowsMatee · 03/10/2025 22:02

InformationEnthusiast2 · 03/10/2025 21:59

No, you're not ever meant to have opinions about your work colleague's appearance. I really don't know which part of this you're finding so difficult. Do you need me to draw you a diagram with crayons or something? Don't. Make. Comments. On. Work. Colleagues. Bodies. That's it.

Speaking of keeping opinions to themselves….

Is no one to have an opinion on anything any more? You seem mighty opinionated. Is it just the physical aspects of another that someone shouldn’t have an opinion about? What about the non physical aspects of a person? Can we have opinions about those? Can we have an opinion, say, on a person’s intentions or perceived intentions? On their choices? On their values? Or should we refrain from comment on another full stop?

You can't make comments about work colleague's appearance. I truly don't know what you're finding so complicated. Do you need me to draw you a diagram with crayons or something? Your work colleague's bodies are not up for discussion. They are not for you to comment on. A toddler could understand this

Pineconesandpetals · 03/10/2025 22:00

Op, what you seem to fail to realise is that you are not “flattering” yourself at all here.
Your “nice arse” has nothing to do with your character, nor will it last forever.
And “strong, forward thinking women” do not comment on the dress size of other women. We know that is immaterial.

BriefEncountersOfTheThirdKind · 03/10/2025 21:59

Islandhopper10 · 03/10/2025 20:40

Of course not. My point was that they are hardly the most flattering item of clothing for the larger lady.

At this point you are just being rude

I think we are all meant to sit in silence and not have a single thought about anyone or anything. Ever.

Now just waiting for the ‘this wasn’t the clever comment you thought it was’ line.

I would mention leggings/ legging related things every now and then just to make him paranoid.

I’m sure they’ll be along any minute now….

It's a compliment about her looking hot in the leggings.

it's a turn of phrase. Not sexist what so ever

Not a turn of phrase, an inappropriate comment for the work place, ie 'she knows shes got everyone looking at her arse, she's intentionally dressed to draw attention to herself' the 'sweat' emoji makes that pretty clear.

Would he have said the same if a male colleague had come in in cycling shorts... i bet not, which makes it sexist.

InformationEnthusiast2 · 03/10/2025 21:55

Puffalicious · 03/10/2025 21:17

I'm reading this with great interest. Last year on an inset day we had primary colleagues join us at my secondary school. One colleague was in beige, scrunch-bum leggings with a tight top. EVERYONE was uncomfortable, including my male friends who said it was difficult to know where to look, as she was presenting at one point - in close proximity to many groups, bending over desks to answer questions etc.

She had been nowhere near a gym on the way either, as she had a full face of make-up & discussed at one point rushing out the door to get to us as she'd mis-timed her journey.

Honestly, folk still talk about it on occasion, as in 'Remember that teacher...' No-one's judging- she did indeed have a fabulous backside- but it was so inappropriate.

We have many young, beautiful PE teachers of both sexes, who wear sports clothing, some of which is tight fitting, but it's worn with a longer top/ sweatshirt- we work with teenagers FGS, it needs to be carefully considered.

You all need to learn to take responsibility for yourselves and stop making your sexual feelings other people's problem. It honestly baffles me how many people are in these comments going "but they made my bits feel tingly and I couldn't control myself and it's their fault for existing!". Seriously, just grow up

Glitter0 · 03/10/2025 21:55

Just take it as a compliment and move on, or you can subtly say something to him so he knows you saw it. He won’t make the same mistake twice!

OchreReader · 03/10/2025 21:54

ginasevern · 03/10/2025 17:48

It's the "she knows what she's doing" bit that pretty much sums up misogyny. It was a common phrase amongst drooling middle aged, pot bellied blokes back in the 70's when I was a teenager in my first job. They'd say "you know just what you're doing", so putting the onous on me for existing (and presumably being nothing more than a slag) rather than them being gross and married fucking perverts.

Yes, this is the part I would have found offensive.
If a man shared with a colleague that I looked good it wouldn’t bother me, although I would find using work emails or Teams to do this unprofessional.
If he was insinuating that I was choosing outfits with the purpose of arousing pervy men who should have been listening to the meeting, I would not have been happy.

Alittlefrustrated · 03/10/2025 21:54
