Would you say this was a red flag on a date?

I'm so out of the loop so I have no idea.

We'd eaten in a café, I couldn't finish my food as I was full so I got the sandwich to take away.

A couple of hours later we were walking around and I got hungry again so took out my sandwich. He said let's find somewhere to sit down whilst you eat.

I said, thanks, but I'm ok honestly I don't mind walking around with it. He said, no I insist you sit down. I said again that I was honestly ok walking with it but he was absolutely adamant that we sat down.

There was just something that felt a bit off about him not taking no for an answer, am I reading into this?

If it were the other way round i would've not asked again after the first no.

He might see it as a red flag

Theme parks usually have tables and chairs to sit at. Festival - sit down on the grass to eat. A picnic - you sit down for it, you don't lug it about eating as you go along.

I couldn't care less where OP ate her sandwich, but clearly her date did.

I'm interested to know, just to get the full picture - was it a triangle, like a pre packed sandwich? Was it a door stop? Or... Was it a massive baguette that you'd be chomping through? It was a footlong wasn't it?!

I suspect it wasn't anything to do with eating. He'd spied the can of Special Brew that you'd brought along to wash it down with.

Tut.

Theme parks never have enough seating for the many people visiting, along with festivals not having seating who would rather sit on wet muddy grass everyone’s been trampling across rather than stay standing/walking eating?
And funfairs don’t do seating either (I’ve walked around many a funfair stuffing my face with burgers, candy floss, toffee apples 😆) I couldn’t give a fuck what anyone thinks. I’ve also walked around town centres after a night out munching on kebabs 🤤

Never heard so much shite in all my life that eating while walking is bad manners that’s absolutely ridiculous and anyway the whole point of the thread is whether her date was showing red flags insisting she sits down; and yes he was. He sounds like a right prick!

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 03/10/2025 16:42

I think my Granny said you shouldn't eat whilst walking as you can get cramp - or was that swimming? Anyway it's not a good look (a bag of chips is just about acceptable).

Juniperwilde · 03/10/2025 16:29

I won’t be told what to do when I’ve already said I’m okay so that would completely put me off. I’d have to ask why he was so insistent…. !

And this thread has been interesting because I had no idea walking around eating could be seen as a red flag… I wasn’t brought up to not eat while walking…
I’ll happily eat an ice cream/sausage roll etc while walking.

I’d rather sit down so I’m not doing too many things at once 😅 and so I can watch the seagulls coming closer, but I’ve not come across anyone who has an issue with walking around while eating until now…

Maybe she does have bear hands with the fur and claws, maybe while she was apparently guzzling a sandwich, she was getting crumbs in her fur. 😂 I am aware it is bare hands, quick typo from not reading my message in any great detail. Tbf the point works either way, she wasn't eating soup with her bear or bare hands 😂

Well, stranger things have happened! Grin
I have found myself using words incorrectly recently (there, their etc) although I had previously never done that--I blame all the incorrect grammar we now see everywhere!

I would really dislike it if a date did this. No beards to contend with hopefully (I'm a lesbian) but I wouldn't want to walk along while someone's eating. I do think It's bad etiquette, and rude. Not just my upbringing, it does seem a bit slovenly that someone can't wait to eat somewhere more suited to eating, and it isn't easy eating while walking and talking. Kind of like someone being on their phone in a way? Distracted. And I might suggest that we sit down although I wouldn't push it. I can't enjoy my food if I am walking along-and the adjectives used seem appropriate-I'd assume they'd be eating as quickly as possible (i.e 'shoving/guzzling') because it isn't ideal to eat and talk.

Bare* (as in without tools) not 'bear' (as in a large mammal). 'Bear hands' implies she has claws and fur.

I dated someone who did that once. We got an ice cream and she insisted we sit down on a bench to eat it. I didn’t want to sit down, I wanted to get to where we were going. It really irritated me. I ended things soon after that, for other reasons, but broadly speaking because we just weren’t compatible. I didn’t feel comfortable with her.

Some people were brought up to believe that it’s rude to eat while you walk, I think. So maybe that’s why.

Absentosaur · 03/10/2025 07:59

Yes definitely, he’s questionable for asking / suggesting something 3 times in a row, when you’d said you didn’t want to do it.

Yes it’s a bit grim walking and eating at the same time.

Both of these things are true. They’ve happened at the same time in this example.

Conclusion: You’re mismatched. Move on.

GarlicBreadStan · 03/10/2025 07:06

No one has ever told me that walking and eating is rude 🤯

You've obviously not scoffed enough flakey juicy sausage rolls whilst walking and eating with a non walk and eater 😂

localnotail · 03/10/2025 07:09

OP, I know eating while walking is bad manners but I do it all the time - time saving and I actually like doing it. You are entitled to do what you want.

He sounds a bit too controlling. He could have said why its so important to him? maybe he was feeling he looks bad mannered himself is someone walking and eating near him? What a bore.

MummyDummyNow · 02/10/2025 12:53

The red flag for me would have been for the person walking around eating a sandwich. It’s not really good manners to walk along eating.

Haha not a red flag for me but I would find it weird that an adult would prefer to eat while walking. Very bad for digestion. And maybe he thought that you didn't want to sit down for his sake and he insisted for your sake..🤷‍♀️

GarlicBreadStan · 03/10/2025 07:06

Toofficeornot · 03/10/2025 00:06

I walk and eat becuase I sometimes I am hungry. But I am very aware that some people think it is very rude. I remember at college eating a saudage roll ina corridor to the absolute horror of my male friend. He was so shocked and embarressed for me 😂it was 25 years ago but i will never forget it.😂

No one has ever told me that walking and eating is rude 🤯

ohyesido · 03/10/2025 05:33

He probably thought you might end up with indigestion but I agree it’s a bit off to insist on his own way. Hints at a control issue and thinking he’s right all the time.

DrowningInSyrup · 03/10/2025 05:27

Margaretbaxter · 02/10/2025 12:59

Jesus..harsh responses.. point taken! Don't think i need to add any more, I've got horrid manners and need bringing to standard. Got it

I don't think it's bad manners at all, but if you like him, I'd let it slide.

Newnamehiwhodis · 03/10/2025 05:10

He’s controlling. Bin.

Rolling my eyes at people saying walking and eating is rude. good lord … haven’t you ever been to a fair or street vendors?
i would simply bin him for being no fun. This controlling, judgmental shit is his best behavior

OhNoNotSusan · 03/10/2025 04:52

a seagull might have swooped down and stolen your sandwich
it was wrong to eat while walking but strange he insisted you sit

The biggest red flag for me here @Margaretbaxter is how you respond to people disagreeing with you! 🚩

Aww I know. I should be fully embracing people calling me chavvy, vile, sloppy, disgusting. How dare I disagree with these kindhearted individuals ❤️

I agree sort of odd date. If it’s something people like doing though, go for it. Doesn’t bother me personally. My own standards is I would not do this. Third date means I would expect to share a kiss. Bad breath from the sandwich wafting over me would turn me off completely. All I could think about is the triangle they just consumed and food stuck in their teeth. No thanks.

Yeah i know...the bad breath only happens from standing up, you're immune to it whilst sitting down 👍

Op take no notice of the ridiculous responses.
Don’t know where people get the idea it’s rude/bad mannered/blah blah to walk while eating.
It would be bad mannered or impolite eating with your mouth open, throwing litter ect…

His insistence on you sitting down and not taking NO for an answer is what is RUDE, DISRESPECTFUL,CONTROLLING BEHAVIOUR! Definitely a red flag.

For anyone who thinks eating outside is bad mannered I’m going to assume you’ve never been to a theme park/festival or even had a picnic ffs get a grip.

Theme parks usually have tables and chairs to sit at. Festival - sit down on the grass to eat. A picnic - you sit down for it, you don't lug it about eating as you go along.

SpidersAreShitheads · 03/10/2025 03:39

Sorry OP, I’d hate to be walking along with someone eating as well. I was also brought up to consider it rude - no different than getting up from the table with your mouth still full.

I don’t know how old you are or the other PP who think it’s fine but maybe a generational thing? I’m in my 40s and it was very much drummed into us. Or possibly geographical differences? I was brought up in London. My family certainly weren’t posh so it’s not class! 😂

I’m sure you would have been very careful but definitely the description of someone walking while eating a half-finished sandwich does conjure up images of food being dropped, crumbs, and just general mess 🫣

I’m going to guess that he had a similar view and felt embarrassed? Has he asked for another date?

Although in my eyes you were in the wrong for wanting to walk and eat (a purely subjective opinion) I think I’d be quite pissed off with someone trying to tell me what to do…. I would probably struggle to get past that, tbh.

I'm sorry but the visions of eating soup with bear hands did make me chuckle.

Margaretbaxter · 02/10/2025 15:30

said i can understand that not everyone agrees with eating whilst walking.
However I think the exaggerations on here are ridiculous.

Edited

It doesn't matter what people on here think. What matters is that, in his mind you were going to embarrass him in public.
And going by general consensus, now you know why.

It's up to you how you take it. I only see a red flag as a matter of compatibility. Do you want to be wondering whether he's ashamed of you every time you do something he sees as wrong.

The only question is whether you gave him and did as he told you? If so, that's a huge red flag on your part and you should think about that fairly hard before continuing to date anyone.
