Why is everyone such a wet lettuce?

Hand-wringing over badges. Upset over name origins. The list goes on and on.

Are people just bored and want some attention online or something?

It's my own fault for reading threads on here, and having other social media I guess!

Apparently young people would have dehydrated to a husk within 30 mins of arriving in the 90s without the constant clutching of at least half a litre of water in a bottle. No lasting through a school day on a swig from a fountain and a small cup of water in the canteen.
Not so much wet lettuces as dry, limp, dehydrated ones Grin

(Young people are great but do have the need to drink out of proportion)

😂😂😂 oh god I can vividly remember the tiny water fountains in school that every single person stuck their gob round kids today would need it bleaching before they took a drink us we didn’t give a monkeys we just wanted a drink. Don’t get me started on those ridiculous massive bottles of water they have to walk round with permanently stuck in their hands like their life depends on it because walking to the end of the road is going to have them dying of thirst.

I saw a video yesterday of a woman in Florida losing her mind over two ducks mating in a pond in a public park. After yelling at the male duck "get off her!!" many times, and "is everyone just going to just stand there?", she waded into the water to physically separate the ducks. I'm not sure what's happening to many of us, but we don't seem to deal well with reality anymore. So many are losing the plot.

Edited

I don't think this is anything new. There's always been people that do crazy things like this. It's just that it's all recorded and documented now and then widly shared with massive audiences for entertainment.

Years ago, it would have been nothing more than a funny story told locally.

Oifeathers · 01/10/2025 20:33

And then AI is going to replace 90% of our jobs in the next 2,5,10 years depending on what you read, then we really will have something to moan about! 💀

God I agree OP.
People are utter drips nowadays. Feeble women allowing men to walk all over them and treat them like rubbish, coloured badges at work, bin issues that needn’t be issues…
I seriously worry about society.

The amount of people who can't make very mundane decisions amazes me. Or who need to know silly things like how often others wash their towels.

How do they function?

People I know don't want to talk to me IRL. Political, religious, parenting views differ ...whatever. Online I just see a post and thing " wtf!" Or " ooh someone new to tell about my shitty life" and comment. I largely get ignored on here too though 😂 it's all good. Some I do get bored with an just move on. Don't feel the need to be a CUNext Tuesday to people just because I don't agree with them.

Everyone gets ignored on Mumsnet unless 1. someone wants to argue with you or 2. you've composed a story so pitiful that the gullible kind posters want to sympathise or 3. you are the OP with a question which has actual answers and the people who respond on your thread are answering.

Very few posters get involved in cosy chats or are acknowledged in any way. You need to get used to the idea of posting into a void - I found this odd when I joined in 2006!

Oh, you want to have a look at singletrackworld, it's where all wet lettuce menfolk go to dissolve in a puddle of their own self-pity.

The natural habitat of the MAMIL. 🤣🤣🤣

I agree with a lot of these posts, but Seasonal Affective Disorder, or seasonal depression is a real thing.

I saw a video yesterday about how to get mentally prepared for winter. Splitting out the weeks into zones and what needs to be done in those to get through mentally.
Or you could….go about your life as usual with a coat and hat and turn the lights on earlier.

ahhhhh how cute

It's the total pushovers that get me. I keep seeing threads like:

"My best friend has borrowed my life savings and not repaid anything, run off with my husband and is using my car every day as she says hers has a fault, meaning I have to walk 9 miles to work. Now she's messaged to ask if I can send over my first-born son to sweep her chimney. AIBU to say he's not free until the weekend as he has football and homework to do in the week?"

"I don't know what to say because I don't like confrontation"

"My neighbour asked if 7 of her family members could camp in our garden for a party for the weekend, and they are still there 5 weeks later . Can anyone help me word a way of asking her to gently suggest that they might leave? I don't like confrontation"
A: "could you say it is against your insurance?" "tell them you need to mow the grass and offer to pay for a hotel" "put a passive aggressive post on your neighbours Facebook page saying has anyone noticed any noise during the night in nearby gardens?". ANYTHING other than just ASK them to leave.

TheHateIsNotGood · 01/10/2025 19:27

Yep, too much angst over things ideological rather than face that everyday things are basically shit overall for many right now. Yet most still can find their little rainbows of pleasure, their reasons to live and the possibilities of a positive future amongst all the durst and strang they hear from the 'voices collectiv'.

Just like the green shoots that beckon spring and the birds that sing - better days are always ahead. The only function of wet lettuce is to chuck it in a stir fry for a bit of green.

BlueDressontheLine · 01/10/2025 19:25

Because they think they're special. I work in the NHS and we literally cannot employ anyone else with adjustments. We can barely keep the team going.

A friend of mine at work has this!

I stop functioning properly from about May to the middle of October. Barely anything but the basics gets done in my house during spring and summer because I simply can’t be arsed. I could cry with happiness that first day of the clocks changing in October when I drive home in the dark. However, mumsnet seem to think that it’s because I want to ‘put a lamp on’ or ‘get snuggled’.

StewkeyBlue · 01/10/2025 18:56

LaurelBush · 01/10/2025 16:00

And yet here you are.

Absolutely!

I do take breaks to answer the door though

LindorDoubleChoc · 01/10/2025 17:53

I did have this thought when I read today about someone "panicking" about Christmas dinner.

😂😂 what would they have done during WW2 and rationing? These snowflakes wouldn’t have survived a day back then😂

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 01/10/2025 18:51

I see your Christmas fridge outrage and raise you designer handbag threads. “I want a good work bag, must fit a laptop, no more than £2k” If you see that, get a brew and some biscuits, set your bets if you will see “get a bag for life and a mini break” or “cotton tote and donate the rest to a foodbank” first.

Bonus points if the wet lettuces turn up to say they’d be too scared to use any bag that cost that much.

MrsPinkSky · 01/10/2025 18:49

When I first joined MN about 14 years ago, one of the first threads I read was from a woman whose neighbour had been (probably mistakenly) using her bin for 4 months.

She wanted to know if she would be unreasonable to point out it was hers 🙄🤷‍♂️

Cabinqueen · 01/10/2025 18:46

Donostiera · 01/10/2025 15:31

Haha I've just read the bin thread...😆

Me too....😂🤣

But only because you mentioned it and I wanted to see how high the level of pettiness is.... She wins!!

Yes but are they all shaking, crying and being too stunned and gobsmacked to simply communicate with people? 😳🤣

😂 You have a point.

Uggbootsforever · 01/10/2025 18:42

And my personal ick, when somebody posts about something that clearly isn’t ok and ends with ‘…and that’s okay’

It clearly fucking isn’t if you’ve done a social media post about it complete with a sad selfie and foreboding orchestra music

You can't even wish for snow on here without someone carrying on like you are personally manifesting a conga line of broken hips and wrists at A&E.

I broke my wrist and hip falling over in my fucking kitchen, so that's put paid to that one! But yeah, all the whinge bags can mope off into the gloom together to wallow in mutual misery.
