To ask DH to tell FIL to stop using our loo if he can’t clean up after himself?

We host my in-laws at least once a month for Sunday lunch and they pop round at various other points in the month.

Almost without fail, FIL will use the loo and it will be left in a disgusting state after - stinking as he hasn’t sprayed, water over the floor from where he hasn’t dried his hands properly and items such as the soap put back in the wrong place.

DH knows this greatly annoys me but won’t say anything - ‘oh, he’s stuck in his ways’ or ‘it’s only once a month’.

I’ve had enough quite frankly, and feel like it’s getting to ultimatum time.

Would you really? You'd demand a guest goes and puts your soap back in the right place. I am assuming most people don't visit you twice.

We could always hope they don't visit! I'm too old for potty training folks whatever their age. Feel sorry for his wife!

Gossipisgood · 07/10/2025 14:19

Could be a lot worse. Imagine if he left skidders in the loo, missed the loo & peed on the floor or didn't wash his hands. That would be disgusting. If you know they're coming over open the bathroom window before they arrive & leave the air freshener on top of the toilet lid so he has to move it to lift the lid (Hint for him). Water drips on the floor & soap in the wrong place isn't a major issue so let it go.

YANBU, that’s disgusting.

Who cleans the loo?

Who cooks for in laws?

DH should be doing both!

I don't think you actually read the post. What part was disgusting?

It looks as though your FIL doesn't actually point Percy at the porcelain but just lets it dangle. Your DH should definitely sort this out or clean up after his father himself. My husband lets his dangle too!!! Why won't he point it?????

Where did you get information from ?

Water on the floor from washed hands and pee on the floor are two completely different things.

Air fresher doesn’t really take the smell away anyway just creates a weird smell. Opening a window helps.

There is no window.

FullOfLoveAndObsessiveCleaner · 03/10/2025 00:37

IMO OP I'd look at it this way... at least you know he's washing his hands before leaving the bathroom! What on earth are you complaining about? Misplaced soap and a few drops of water! Seriously!
I'm a self confessed clean freak but I'd rather have visitors to clean up after when they leave after feeling welcomed into my home rather than have anyone feel uncomfortable and not visit at all. Especially loved ones who won't be around forever. Priorities! Get them in order!

Emcolmol · 02/10/2025 19:00

I think you’re the one being unreasonable. He’s hardly making a mess !!!! Must be nice to shit roses as you obviously do!!!! 🙄🙄🙄🙄

LizzieW1969 · 02/10/2025 09:09

I also say YABU. Nothing you’ve said sounds at all disgusting, a couple of drips on the floor a the soap in the wrong place???

And not everyone can wait until they get home to do a shit, many will have bowel problems that you’re not aware of. Although I personally would try to mitigate it by cleaning the toilet behind me with the brush and toilet cleaner.

"Here's a big brush. Would you like a demonstration of how to use it? Or would you prefer to use a bucket?"

Sadly your hilarious reply is totally irrelevant to this thread.

Princesspollyyy · 30/09/2025 17:17

Do your in laws travel very far to get to your house?? Surely your FIL could try going before he leaves his house??

i would never shit in someone else’s house, even family, unless I was absolutely desperate. I can’t really relax unless I’m at home. I think it’s weird shitting in someone else’s bathroom, especially if he’s doing it every time.

Glad you have cooperative bowels, not everyone is the same.
I wouldn't choose to use anyone's loo but I don't have the choice.

RoseAlone · 02/10/2025 02:20

Who has spray in their toilet? Can think of nothing worse than two disgusting smells mingling together 🤢🤢🤢

MyAmusedPearlSquid · 02/10/2025 02:04

Lol seems petty your end

Sweetnbooksnradio4 · 02/10/2025 01:04

I must admit that I thought the same!

I agree with whoever said to get hubby to nip in there, open the window and spray (if no one is asthmatic etc). Maybe dry around the area.

If he’s a nice father in law, as you said, you won’t want to hurt his feelings or have them not visit.
Maybe the ladies, or other sensitive souls could use upstairs?

Hope it resolves without a falling out or hurt feelings x

What you have listed doesn’t sound like “disgusting state” to me.

Toilet full of shit, toilet roll on the floor, skids - yes you have every right to be annoyed.

Splashes of water and displaced soap is not disgusting.

Thank you! I was sitting there thinking about the smell: 'Erm... so because he uses the loo for what it's designed for, it's left in a "disgusting state"?'

Not everyone wants to breathe in a ton of chemical shit every time they have a crap (much prefer real shit as a lung contaminant - at least we've been building resilience to that for several thousand years), and water and a displaced soap is hardly the end of the world. It's certainly not 'disgusting'.

Honestly, my response to your whinge was similar to that in to Tamatoa's in Moana: '"Don't! That's my grandma's" - I ATE MY GRANDMA.'

BeanQuisine · 01/10/2025 22:49

You should ask DH to tell his father, gently, that you need to keep your toilet clean enough to eat your dinner out of, should there be some emergency situation where it becomes necessary to eat your dinner out of the toilet.

Also that if the soap is not positioned exactly as found, this could lead to consequences much more serious that one might think, such as an infestation of wasps etc.

And drops of water on the floor near the towels are known to attract scorpions and bats. This is all just common sense and it's sad that he needs to be told.

MrsJeanLuc · 01/10/2025 22:44

DisplayPurposesOnly · 30/09/2025 17:04

I think I could cope with misplaced soap and some water splashes once a month.

Next time you see him headed that way: "Frank, are you going to the loo? Please can you spray afterwards. Cheers."

I'm sorry, what's this about spraying? I've never heard of it, except in the context of male cats ... but I'm sure that's NOT what op means!

Laura95167 · 01/10/2025 22:41

He put the soap back wrong, left drops of water on the floor and forgot the airfreshner. And you want to tell him hes unwelcome to poo in your home?!?!

I thought you were going to say he left in unflushed or peed all over.

Surely you could just as DH to go spray it after him? Or get one of those reed dispensers?

ApplesinmyPocket · 01/10/2025 22:03

Totally unreasonable. As people age, they need a bit more help and understanding. You perhaps don't know this yet, but you will, you will....

(I speak as someone who didn't know they were ill till last year, at 'only' 66, and now I need all the compassion I can get, including occasionally making a mess in someone's loo.)

IsThistheMiddleofNowhere · 01/10/2025 21:38

I'd just make DH clean up after FIL. I think it might be a bit embarrassing to tell FIL to spray because he stinks and then telling him not to splash water on the floor or where the soap should go will just seem like he is being got at so getting DH to do the cleaning up seems the obvious answer.

pineapplecrushed · 01/10/2025 21:29

Water and soap in the wrong place isn't 'disgusting'. I thought you were going to say there was shit everywhere.

Instructions · 01/10/2025 20:50

Soap in the 'wrong' place? Some water in the floor? Not using an artificial air freshener spray? That is disgusting?

Oh op I feel for those who have to live with you 😂

limescale · 01/10/2025 20:45

Spinmerightroundbaby · 01/10/2025 20:40

This. Not worth raising an issue over once a month. Your DH has to deal with it - either he cleans up or he raises the issue.

Deal with it being - moving soap from wrong place to right place and wiping a bit of water from the floor. Blimey…
