What’s given you the work ick?

I’ve started a new job recently and was surprised at how quickly I lost respect for certain colleagues. My manager regularly doesn’t show up for meetings she scheduled and just leaves you sitting there. Another colleague vapes through every meeting like it’s completely normal. It’s not the end of the world but it definitely gives me the ick and now I can’t take them seriously.

So AIBU to feel this way? And what are your workplace icks?

Oh yes, can't stand the first one or 'Jack of all trades, master of none!' telling you, the Specialist, the correct way of doing things as they have been on one course in your area or work!

Of not "or work".

I quite like LinkedIn. Everyone is always thrilled! Which makes a change from the gloom of Twitter.

I cannot bear

  • people who think their opinion is worth more than evidence.
  • Liars.
  • people who talk too much in meetings. You've made your point, we got it in the first sentence.

People who seem to think a shared office space in the arena to engage in personal acts of grooming. I've seen it all, from having a good root up their nose, plucking hairs, and clipping/biting nails. I find it absolutely gross.

I can remember one meeting becoming distracted as I was transfixed to a bogie a man had picked. He eventually put his finger in his mouth and ate it. Bloody gross.

My male boss once straight out said that he enjoyed "working late" (he actually did air quotes) when his kids were young because it meant he could avoid doing bathtime. To me, the sole woman in the team, with two kids under five.

Goodness, what a Star 🙄

I totally agree. When and why did managers/colleagues turn the workplace into a bloody therapists ?

I know and personally I get asked quite a bit I'm ok, I think my friend (colleague) says it's because I regularly look shocked, I am not though just have big eyes and I'm someone who is absorbed in work so if someone asks if I'm ok, I will probably act a bit startled and open my eyes further as I like to give someone my full attention in case it is actually something important about work. They really are nice people it's just not really something I'll ever get used to, I don't think.

I'm in Finland so sauna nights with work aren't unusual at all but you'd normally have separate male and female sessions so not inappropriate, but being the only woman there I didn't want to be left out, as all the chat happens in the sauna. I went by myself last time and was so bored so thought this was the better option but eww, testicles.

I was going to ask if you were in a Scandinavian country as I have a family member who was telling me about this is in Denmark.

God, needed this post today 😂

Director level guy shagging female employees who report to him, how replacing that approach with changing the reporting line of his latest bang in case it’s frowned upon

Luluco · 01/10/2025 13:35

Forced fun on teams meetings such as quizzes and Pet day. I really can’t stand it but we are forced to do this as we all work in different locations. Everyone has to take a turn and think of something fun to do in meetings.

climbingamountainash · 01/10/2025 13:34

Also my manager who at a recent 1:1 told me in detail how his extreme Athletes foot condition affects his other health conditions. I wanted to run away.

A colleague who continuously clears her throat and coughs all day long, due to an allergy that she won’t take the medication prescribed for. After 7 hours of it I get to the point of being very close to tears at how it grates on my nerves.

From experience I now know to listen to my gut and get out as soon as a feel a bad vibe. My role before this I just knew, there was a strange atmosphere.

But things that give me the ick are "we love each other" and "we are family" from a boss who is useless and spiteful.

Or being held to account for something that was nothing to do with me, or colleagues that book every bank holiday week off. Or those with children who think the summer and christmas is more important for them. Or really tight bosses that cannot even get a tin of chocolates for the team or a round of drinks at Christmas.

Lifehaslifedme · 01/10/2025 13:22

The receptionist/administrator trying to change things within my team without speaking to me.Thankfully I have a great team who are brilliant at communication.

KStockHERO · 01/10/2025 13:20

I'm an academic.

Basically everything.

Most recently, the horribly patronising and fawning way that academic staff speak about professional support staff. Makes me want to gouge my own eyes out.

I can't fucking wait to retire.

Peachandpassionfruit · 29/09/2025 21:38

The idea of bringing your whole self to work. Or a ‘work family’.

Urgh.

We have this in our place spoken about a lot by directors but actually only role that ethos out to the few in their clique which is even worse

Shouldn't real say this but perpetually positive colleagues that worry about everyone's well-being when not called for, even if you like them if you are slightly introverted and want to just concentrate on work this is a bit annoying.

I totally agree. When and why did managers/colleagues turn the workplace into a bloody therapists ?

Untrained · 01/10/2025 12:23

I had many different 'team leaders' when I worked for a large insurance company, two who I remember for the wrong reasons are the woman who would stand in front of us in daily morning meetings constantly rubbing her pregnant stomach. Now the miracle of life is a blessed thing but constantly, rhythmically rubbing any part of your body in front of a mixed group of people is surely inappropriate! Worse though, the manager who would sit in front of us, in a long skirt, with her legs apart, 'wafting' said skirt to air herself...

TheNinkyNonkyIsATardis · 01/10/2025 12:02

Our company is going through a major rebrand, and one colleague persists in using "wacky" fonts, emojis and AI summaries in summary documents that don't really do anything.

I've diligently used the branding tools available and am a bit of a comms nerd. I've made a LOT of suggestions about how to improve the presentation of the project tasks - but his major IT project is foundering because he totally ignores my suggestions, then whines to me for endless amounts of time about how "people aren't getting it".

Then ignores my suggestions again.

It's fucking AWKWARD watching him monologue about new concepts using amateur materials, whilst some poor sod is sat there thinking, "wtf".

CruCru · 01/10/2025 11:55

I have a friend who says that his team absolutely hate answering the phone and will not if they possibly can. It isn’t laziness, more that they assume that someone important ringing them is going to be bad news or they are in trouble.

He ended up having to get them all together and explain that when he rings them, it is part of their job to take his calls.

People who leave the communal kitchen a mess.

Managers who take credit for someone else’s work.

Kiss arse people

How long was thos sauna night?? You're only supposed to be in there for 20 mins max..

20 minutes isn't enough for sauna! It takes a couple of hours at least, going outside to cool down from time to time. At one point we had a break to eat sausages.

Gettingbysomehow · 01/10/2025 10:04

Natsku · 01/10/2025 06:50

Something that gave my the ick in the proper meaning of the word - we had a sauna night at work, I was the only woman so I suggested we all wear towels so we can have a mixed sex sauna and I wouldn't miss out on the all the conversation. By the end of the sauna everyone except me and one other guy had given up on towels and I saw things I can not erase from my mind no matter how hard I try. Proper ick.

Hell no.....boak.
