Fed up of splitting the bill with larger friends

There are four of us in our friendship group and we go out for dinner every other month or so, splitting the bill equally between us.

A couple of my friends are larger ladies and they often order slightly more food than myself and another friend.

With prices having risen sharply, we are now noticing the cost of things more closely and starting to feel a bit aggrieved that we are paying for food we aren’t eating.

Would it be rude of my friend and I to suggest we don’t split the bill moving forward? I just don’t want it to be awkward as I think it will be obvious why that suggestion is being made.

Ooh a stealth fat shaming thread. This should be interesting 🤔

How have I fat shamed?

The part about them being larger ladies is irrelevant. They order more (reason not relevant) and suggesting you each pay for your meal is a valid suggestion given cost of eating out.

Not sure your ‘friends’ size is relevant to splitting the bill however you feel appropriate.
I split it by what we had if someone is chugging £20 cocktails and I’m not drinking.

You have.

My eldest is so yhink youd lose them if they walked behind a lamp post - they eat approx twice as much as me abx I’m considered obese.

You’re fat shaming.

TheatricalLife · 28/09/2025 21:41

Just say I'll pay for what I owe. You don't need to mention anything about people being larger or eating more. If your meal is cheaper it's fine to pay that, regardless of if your friends are large or small.

I’d strongly advise against ‘You’re fat so eat more than me’ as an opening gambit

No need for the fat shaming.
as cost of eating out has increased its a reasonable suggestion that each person pays for their own meal.

You are not unreasonable to want to split the bill, but better to just phrase it that you are watching the pennies and want to order carefully.

That sounds sensible, thanks

I don’t necessarily think it’s obvious that that’s your reasoning. But it’s fine to just pay for what you eat. I wouldn’t expect my choices to be subsidised by my friends.

Absolutely not, just say at the start to the waiting staff that you'll be having separate bills
. That'll likely curb the freeloaders!
