To want a coffee shop with a no children policy

Amiterriblex3 · 28/09/2025 11:51

In a coffee shop and have to listen to a bunch of 2 year old screaming, absolutely screaming at the top of his lungs. Their mothers might be immune to such noise but I am not. I would be embarrassed if my child screamed like that

The "quiet coffee shop".

It could catch on.

Even parents don't want to hear other people's children!

Actually you might have something there. Be lovely for neurodiverse people as well.

I have two opposing opinions on this

  1. there are a lot of childfree people who love to air their views about how tedious kids are on MN and it gets tiresome

  2. why shouldn't people with kids enjoy the opportunity to be in a quiet space when they don't have their children with them? Despite having primary-aged children of my own I do find that kids have the ability to shatter the silence in a way that doomscrollers and chatters don't (probably the pitch)

Absolutely agree with you. I wouldn’t choose a cafe aimed at toddlers these days. DD is 18.

I have no objection to the OPs request. Or to child free cafes. More that posts like this one feel deliberately aimed at upsetting mums. The chances are those mums with screaming toddlers are already having a tough time. Sure some may be bad parents but I bet 99% are struggling and could do with support rather than being goaded on a space they come to for support.

You'd be embarrassed if a toddler was a toddler?

I’d be embarrassed (with myself) if my toddler acted like that and I didn’t remove them from the situation.

Surely part of being a parent is teaching your kids what behaviour is and isn’t acceptable.

Jaxhog · 28/09/2025 14:13

Be careful! I commented on a coffee shops hard surfaces making kids screams echo - and got banned!

Icon15 · 28/09/2025 14:13

NoCommentingFromNowOn · 28/09/2025 11:52

And a no phone calls policy please.

And also, no dogs!

Ooh yes. I love the idea of having a "quiet zone" cafe. No children, mobiles, general noisiness.

I love children and crying doesn't bother me but sometimes peace and quiet is just bliss. I think this would be a good business idea, I'm sure lots of people would like a quiet café.

I would love a quiet cafe! Absolute bliss!

a very small demographic, one where most people are at work during the day, has no chance of surviving.

Hmm, not convinced. Not everyone works Monday-Friday 9-5/6 or whatever from their business's premises - working hours and set-ups are so much more flexible now, not to mention shift work.

Legomania · 28/09/2025 14:10

Iamthemoom · 28/09/2025 13:21

Really don’t understand why you would choose to post about wanting child free spaces on a parenting forum?

I have two opposing opinions on this

Neemie · 28/09/2025 14:10

Most kids are fine though. You wouldn’t suggest banning all adults because there always seems to be at least one in every cafe who puts their phone on speaker to have a loud conversation or has a teams meetings without headphones. Certain cafes have a more child friendly vibe and they encourage the more lax parents so I avoid them in the same way as I avoid rowdier pubs

user1476613140 · 28/09/2025 14:08

Noisy wee feckers👀😂 I have four DC and remember the loud toddler stage well... Unfortunately two have autism and never get out of the noisy stage!

I look forward to the start of each school day...silence.

jbm16 · 28/09/2025 14:06

dreamiesformolly · 28/09/2025 12:51

Because they'd be tapping into a different and very much under-served demographic.

Perhaps because child free spaces are wanted only becsuse a lot of parents don’t seem to actually parent these days?

If the idea offends you so much, maybe consider whether you are being part of the problem.

🤣 DD is 18 so I doubt it! I’m not remotely offended by child free spaces for people who don’t want to be around children, good for them. I just think it’s odd to choose Mumsnet to post about it. There are likely more sympathetic child hating forums than one primarily for parenting run by mums! These sort of posts feel deliberately aimed at goading mums, most of whom have a tough enough time these days.

When DD was little I was incredibly fortunate that she never went through a tantrum stage so sat quietly reading, colouring, playing or chatting to me in cafes. If she had been a screamer I wouldn’t have taken her to cafes.

Now now, the OP said child free. Not disabled people with mobility scooters. No need to make something out of nothing.

Meant in a light hearted way. Maybe OP’s idea could work though?

inamo · 28/09/2025 14:00

Adult only
No dogs
No phones or electronic devices
Bring a newspaper or book

Or actually TALK to others. All in my dreams lol.

My local coffee shop/cafe is run by the nearby sheltered care facility (hospital) for disabled and Downs young adults. It is noisy, crazy, great food, lovely coffee and the staff are delightful, learning skills to help them move on from special care and obtain some life skills. But it is LOUD.

I use it a lot despite the noise as I feel I'm supporting the facility and its members. But I have to say there is another one nearby in a swanky apartment complex that is set up for WFH tenants of the apartments. Cool decor, fancy coffee, and it's so quiet! I go there for respite.

SushiForMe · 28/09/2025 13:59

Mine would be no under-8s and no dogs.
I find that loud phonecalls are rare so I wouldn’t add it to the list - but would be frowned upon ;)

Iamthemoom · 28/09/2025 13:58

dreamiesformolly · 28/09/2025 13:33

Errm, because it isn't solely a parenting forum. Have you not been on here very long?

I’ve been here for years. It’s literally in the title! I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one who finds it really goady posting anti child posts on a parenting forum. But sure, Mumsnet isn’t just for mums anymore. These days it’s also for trolls, misogynists and apparently people who hate children, because us mums can’t have nice things and need to learn to share!

Bodypumpmum · 28/09/2025 13:57

YABU

its discrimination to exclude families with young children from a coffee shop. Maybe stay at home if you want a peaceful experience?

AzurePanda · 28/09/2025 13:53

My children are all grown up now but I generally find the behaviour of other adults more intrusive, anti social and downright annoying than children. This particularly applies to long haul flights.

Skodacool · 28/09/2025 13:52

GarlicBreadStan · 28/09/2025 11:52

2 year olds scream. They're toddlers. They push buttons.

Are the parents trying to stop them from screaming by entertaining them? This may change my perspective slightly.

They don’t have to scream, I know plenty who don’t. If mine did that I would take them out.

Septictanking · 28/09/2025 13:50

Please, please, please, open this coffee shop! OP😂I would be there every single day, no kids, no phones, just everyday chit chat and quiet calm. Heavenly, everywhere you go these days it's loud loud loud, there must be plenty of need surely? for truly quiet spaces, as a PP said even libraries are full of noise these days, the other day I was witness to one loud phone call, and a gaggle of screaming fucking kids, piss off it's a library, ssshhhh😂

inezname · 28/09/2025 13:47

'2 year olds scream. They're toddlers. They push buttons.'

When my 2 year did that I wound just put him outside the cafe, and would sit back down to enjoy my coffee.

He'd be hysterical but stop after 30 seconds when I'd go out to get him and ask if he would like to come in and act nicely.

(I would see him through a glass door). So he would be safe, but I would absolutely not let him scream inside a public place ever. After he turned 2 so could understand he can't act like that.

MrsLizzieDarcy · 28/09/2025 13:41

I don't know about others but I've become much more noise sensitive since turning 50, and I just don't want to be surrounded by loud noises. It makes me jumpy and on edge. A quiet cafe would be bliss.

CatHairEveryWhereNow · 28/09/2025 13:41

LandSharksAnonymous · 28/09/2025 12:14

My local small one doesn't allow kids! It's not explicit - but they refuse to sell anything that isn't coffee or water. So no orange juice, 'babyccino' or anything like that. Their cakes all contain alcohol or nuts as well, so typically not things suitable for children. No space for prams and no high-chairs either.

I'm quite a fan - whilst it doesn't say 'children aren't welcome' it's pretty evident when you walk in. 😃

Edit - and just to say to those who clearly think any shop operating such a policy would fail...mine definitely isn't! There's usually a queue before it even opens on a Sunday 😉

Edited

We went in one like that yesterday - man with toddler walking with hands and crawling getting in everyones way with no apparent awareness of that and at one point 5 dogs barking at each other with owners sort of shrugging in very small space.

It was still okay experince and they had more wanting to come in then there were seats.

TheWytch · 28/09/2025 13:38

dontcomeatme · 28/09/2025 12:02

I think you're all talking about a library. OP open a library and quiet cafe fusion place. It will be like in the movies, every time someone makes a noise everyone can automatically and simultaneously say SHHHHHHH and look really judgemental as they do.

When did you last visit a library? Those days are long gone.

It's like feeding time at the zoo in my local one. No peace anywhere now.
