To want a coffee shop with a no children policy

Amiterriblex3 · 28/09/2025 11:51

In a coffee shop and have to listen to a bunch of 2 year old screaming, absolutely screaming at the top of his lungs. Their mothers might be immune to such noise but I am not. I would be embarrassed if my child screamed like that

There is a cafe in Vietnam that is silent, all the staff are deaf. There is an ordering system where you show what you would like to order rather than speak. Beautiful, peaceful place. I took my two sons there when they were 2 and 6. They just fell into this calm environment, not a peep out of them for well over an hour. The weirdest thing.

AgnesMcDoo · 28/09/2025 15:38

If there was a market for a quiet, sedate coffee shop it would already be in business.

personally I’d like to ban noisy, chatty men from the sauna and steam rooms in the gym - I find it hard to chill listening to them noisily comparing their football teams and bowel movements

Nevereatcardboard · 28/09/2025 15:37

I’ve found my local cafes tend to be quieter just before and during school pick up time between 2.30-3.30. It’s too late for lunch, so an ideal time for a nice quiet coffee.

Confusedorabused · 28/09/2025 15:37

I have 2 kids, now the youngest is 5 they dont throw tanteums anymorw bur i alwaua dis my best for thwm to do that in restaurants and coffee shops.

Silly post
End of the day, it's supply and demand- people will vote with their feet; I'd visit a child-free cafe and I have kids.
Maybe you wouldn't but we don't have to structure everything around you.
Every single thing does not have to be for every single person every time

Not really a silly post. I suspect OP isn't the only person in the world who fancies a cup of coffee without a symphony of screaming in the background (and 66% of voting posters think she isn't BU).

The really asinine posts are those saying 'open a cafe then'.

Buenovistasc · 28/09/2025 15:34

Isn't this called a wine bar?

ComfortFoodCafe · 28/09/2025 15:33

As someone who was woken up by her neighbours 4 screaming children at 6.30am this morning, yanbu. Would love a child free place to go to. Sick of parents just allowing their children to behave like that.

ttcat37 · 28/09/2025 15:32

I’d love one for the days I don’t have my 2 year old.

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 28/09/2025 15:32

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 28/09/2025 14:28

And no dogs, crocodiles or giraffes please.

What about alpacas? Assuming Santa finally brings one this year the bloody tightwad!

You have obviously not been in a library in years as they are now a fecking noisy place to be. Noise is positively encouraged at times. I know why (footfall = staying open) but it's certainly not a quiet relaxing space anymore 😟

Indeed - no longer the hushed silence with stern librarians. Mine hosts mother and children groups with singing and musical instruments. It's lovely to see the revival/rejuvenation of libraries - albeit not for their original purpose. (Those groups don't go on all day every day - so if you're strategic with then you go, you can usually avoid the soft play feel!)

Adult only
No dogs
No phones or electronic devices
Bring a newspaper or book

What about Kindles (other electronic reading devices are available).

Electronic devices on silent?

MyDeftDuck · 28/09/2025 15:27

Yes, I get it………and many places just lend themselves to amplify any noise which makes noisy individuals sound even worse.
I would love to see a chain of coffee shops/ cafes where laptops are banned, children and babies are not allowed, and the use of a mobile is outlawed. Will it happen? …..probably not but I do sympathise with the OP. And loud noise can be painful to some.

What2do22 · 28/09/2025 15:14

Open one then?

Owning a childfree cafe is totally different to wanting to visit one every now and again.

GarlicBreadStan · 28/09/2025 11:55

But you'd be "embarrassed" if your 2 year old screamed like that. Despite knowing that they scream?

Also, you didn't answer my question. Is the parent doing anything, like entertaining their child, to attempt to get them to stop screaming?

But how does that make the screaming any more melodious?

I did laugh at the people suggesting the OP goes to the library for a quiet space as they can be anything but, particularly on weekends. I was in one during the summer holidays and two boys were shrieking as they climbed up the bookshelves whilst their dad sat scrolling on his phone.

Anyway @strictlynopolitics I seem to have become intolerant to pretty much everyone these days but please can I still use your cafe? I have excellent table manners, am not a fussy eater and will help with the washing up.

What2do22 · 28/09/2025 15:14

Open one then?

DBD1975 · 28/09/2025 15:13

Totally agree OP, why do people let their children scream and not do anything to try and stop them?

Kids make a noise and I can accept that but the screaming at the top of their lungs whilst parents ignore is very annoying

Puregoldy · 28/09/2025 15:11

One of these exists near me. I think it’s a deli too. I’ve never been in it as normally have children in tow. Only over 12s welcome… not sure about dogs though!

havinalarf · 28/09/2025 15:09

The Old Barracks Café in Birdhill, Tipp, is child-free

It's a long way to Tipperary, a long way to go.... but I might for a quiet, nice cafe!

KimberleyClark · 28/09/2025 15:06

Enigma54 · 28/09/2025 13:01

Get a coffee machine!

You don’t get the feeling of being connected to the community and supporting a local business with a coffee machine though.

Itiswhysofew · 28/09/2025 15:00

The Old Barracks Café in Birdhill, Tipp, is child-free, if you're anywhere near?

I'm not but I am going to make it my business to get there in the next year and give them a massive shout-out.

phoenixrosehere · 28/09/2025 15:02

Neemie · 28/09/2025 14:10

Most kids are fine though. You wouldn’t suggest banning all adults because there always seems to be at least one in every cafe who puts their phone on speaker to have a loud conversation or has a teams meetings without headphones. Certain cafes have a more child friendly vibe and they encourage the more lax parents so I avoid them in the same way as I avoid rowdier pubs

Same. I walk to my local Starbucks and head there around 6:30 pm and stay til close, 8:30pm. It is pretty quiet for that entire time.

Most cafes near me shut at 5:30 and when I have gone it’s loud mainly due to the loud talkers so I stick to the Starbucks. Plus, they don’t charge me for oat milk.

RoyalBumWiper · 28/09/2025 15:01

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 28/09/2025 11:57

I mean if we go down this road we could all ban things we don’t like eg loud telephone conversations, loud in person conversations , people sitting on laptops, business meetings, etc

Or is this one of those posts trying to make out children are some how equivalent to dogs? Having read a post wanting dog free cafes?

@MoreDangerousThanAWomanScorned my boys have just turned 3 and 1. I really wouldn't take it personally. But maybe that is because if I ever had the chance it would be nice to meet a friend alone in a child free zone that isn't a pub.
