Why are people so impatient and nasty?

Went to supermarket this morning - I always go early so it’s not busy. I was pulling a trolly out and was suddenly shoved from behind and told “watch where you’re going!”. I apologised but obviously didn’t realise someone was stood right behind me but this person was livid, was there really a need to be so angry and aggressive?!

So I’m stood in post office queue, temporarily distracted and didn’t realise the cashier was waiting for me until the person behind me literally barged past me and went in front. I expected the cashier to tell them I was next yet instead, she rolled her eyes and laughed with the pusher. And before anyone says I was daydreaming for hours etc, it was literally a few seconds of not paying attention.

So I’m back doing my shopping and I stopped and quickly checked my list on my phone - I then heard “excuse me!” And looked up to see an angry looking woman rolling her eyes. I moved out of the way and she snapped “I need to be in that fridge!” So I moved again. At this point I felt like abandoning my trolly and just walking out! What is it with people lately?? I’ve noticed an increase in snappy and inpatient behaviour recently, is it the fact that people in this country are just so generally unhappy these days??

So sad everyone is in such a rush and can't spare a few seconds to be patient. When I am i may feel impatient but always polite and considerate of others.

Driving is the same, far too many rude and impatient people who put their own reckless speeding before danger of others.

As someone who believes the appropriate punishment for getting in my way by dithering in a busy supermarket is kneecapping, YABU.

If you’ve got all day to faff about, lucky you. Feel free to waste as much of your own time as you want. But don’t waste mine, because I don’t tolerate that.

If your time is so precious, get your shopping delivered, and spare us all that anger

How rude

So 3x in one day and you think other people are the problem? You sound irritating and I don’t blame other people for showing their frustration. Everyone has somewhere to be, not waiting for you to wake up to your surroundings

HornungTheHelpful · 27/09/2025 21:10

LizzieW1969 · 27/09/2025 19:34

Why are so many posters continuing to berate an OP who only posted once? She isn’t going to suddenly pop up to defend herself.

Because that’s how fucking irritating this type of behaviour is. And many posters saying it’s ok - we’re berating them too.

ArtfulDenimSheep · 27/09/2025 21:09

I seem to be one of these people that have a sign above them saying 'pick on me" I don't go to supermarkets anymore and get all my shopping delivered. I suppose I'm too sensitive but I have had too many of these incidents exactly like the op has. It's not nice.

TotallyUnapologeticOmnivore · 27/09/2025 18:07

Unfortunately, dawdling is a luxury not everyone can afford.

So I ask again (edited to clarify I’m asking - the poster who says it’s fine to dawdle) why can’t I do things at my pace simply because it happens to be faster than your pace and you’re in my way? Your approach doesn’t work which is why we need to both be aware and tolerant of those around us. Those who are polite by being more aware tend to experience more tolerance than those who don’t. Funny that.

Are you sure they haven't said excuse me 3 times first you sound like your on a different planet to the rest of us

LouiseK93 · 27/09/2025 19:25

But your time keeping and commitment's aren't anyone else's problem??

It sounds like you are inattentive and unobservant to what’s going on around you. People should be more polite but I think you should try and be more aware. It seems to be a pattern and I can see why it would annoy others to be honest.

earphoneson · 26/09/2025 11:13

Nobody is ‘absentminded’ or ‘daydreaming’ on purpose. It’s a human condition and a very normal one. It’s often a coping mechanism too to protect yourself from stress and overload. It’s not rude to do things in your own pace and you should be allowed to manage life how you manage.

Unfortunately, dawdling is a luxury not everyone can afford.

YouCantParkThere · 27/09/2025 12:17

firstly, don’t start walking backwards without checking over your shoulder. Shouldn’t really need saying but apparently it does.

secondly, if someone actually walked around you in the post office queue, that suggests you were dolly daydreaming for more than just a second.

waken up, OP.

TheeNotoriousPIG · 27/09/2025 11:50

It is because they are the most important people in their lives, and you (and other people) are merely an inconvenience! (Lighthearted, obviously).

Some people have no manners, and others have no time for dawdlers when they have a million other things to do that day. The world is a very crowded place, but we all still need to get along.

Can't remember the exact expression, but it's something like "if everyone else seems to be the problem, maybe you're the problem"

Maybe you got unlucky, but the fact three people got annoyed with you for being inattentive says otherwise

ozarina · 27/09/2025 11:28

Men have to be the worst things at supermarket checkouts - always seem to be surprised that they have to get their phone or wallet out to pay for things and don't get me started on packing things 😂

Seasidewalker · 27/09/2025 11:05

I know, I'm with you, I try to avoid going to the supermarket with him as I spend the whole time (I may exaggerate slightly!), checking he's not bumping into people 🤷‍♀️. I've tried, I really have....

Yes it’s frustrating. I once had some big 6ft tall bloke just take a couple of steps backwards while I was walking behind him in a bar. Which made me spill my drink all over myself and another woman who was near me. The man then continued to chat to his friends completely oblivious to the fact he’d even knocked me or spilled my drink all over! 😡

There’s nothing I hate more than people who step back or start walking backwards (god knows why) in shops and supermarkets and then tread on me, usually big massive 6ft tall heavy men with big feet who do it too! It gives me the rage.

Love him dearly but my partner is dreadful at this. No awareness of the world around him at all and as he's retired dawdles around. In a supermarket he'll park the trolley across a fridge, he steps back into people without it in any way occurring to him to check if there is anyone behind him. It drives me mad so it must be irritating to others!

Rainydayinlondon · 27/09/2025 10:57

There’s a reduced section at our local supermarket which gets stocked full of stuff at 6 pm… Charlie Bigham reduced from £10 to £3 sort of thing

There’s always one who will park their trolley sideways so no one else can get a look in until they’ve taken their fill.

Not sure if deliberate or not, but no one says “excuse me” as it might seem “greedy”.

This has made me think that perhaps part of the reason diagnosis of neurodiversity has increased is because the world is so much more difficult for people with neurodiversity now, people need that diagnosis and awareness now more than ever just so people (hopefully) show a bit more kindness, respect and patience. So many people were able to get on ok undiagnosed in past times because the world went at a slower and more gentle pace.

I’m guilty of dawdling. Unfortunately I have to use a Zimmer frame to walk with now so I am very slow. People do get impatient. I try to move to the side to let them pass. The worst one was being poked in the back when queuing for the receptionist at the local outpatients. It took me about 15 seconds to move, so i deserved a poke for being slow. The guy who did it acted surprised when I told him to get off me!

You have a zimmer frame so people should be aware of that.

OP should not have to do her shopping at 9pm just to accommodate irritable, rude, aggressive people.

Did you read what I posted?

I said she shouldn't have to deal with rudeness.

I'm saying it's better to shop later as less people! It's a nicer experience. Less running into said rude people.
