I had to go to GP earlier with ongoing bowel issues. She asked me to lay down so she could listen to my abdomen. I laid down, she pressed the stethoscope onto my stomach and I ended up involuntarily farting loudly. She actually jumped back at the sound. Absolutely mortified, I start to apologise and my stomach starts making loud squeaky noises and I end up farting again mid sentence. She remained professional throughout but I’m so embarrassed. I have to go back tomorrow and I’m dreading a) seeing her again and b) it happening again.

DH says will have forgotten all about it. Is he right or just being nice? I feel like cancelling the appointment

Nah no need to worry. She may have forgotten about it by now. I doubt you’re the first or the last.
seriously, you’re good

shuggles · 25/09/2025 23:14

@BrisPerm She won't care, because she will have seen a lot funnier/worse. Your story is nothing compared to (for example) people that have shown up to A and E with toilet brushes stuck up their arses.

LooLoo274 · 25/09/2025 23:12

If it makes you feel better, I can't cope with needles and once projectile vomited after a blood test. I believe it now says in big red letters LIE DOWN FOR NEEDLES or something like that at the top of my notes.

I once had a doctor fart at me, well at my 4 year old. She bent down to listen to his chest and let off a huge rip roaring fart! My 4 year old was mortified, didn't know where to look. I just laughed awkwardly. She didn't seem particularly bothered, it wasn't the first time it's happened I bet!

Well done to your 4 year old, mine would've laughed out loud! How funny

MeganM3 · 25/09/2025 22:48

There are worse people to fart at. Doctors are well used to it.
Perhaps hold off going for a bikini wax.

Make a light hearted remark to GP such as ' I'd wear a mask just in case'' if I were you.

Florally · 25/09/2025 22:47

Apart from the weird attempt to derail - what a lovely thread of support.

Echo everything OP, she likely won’t even remember. Don’t cancel your appointment and hope you get sorted quickly and easily.

Doctors see this sort of thing day in, day out. Try not not to let it bother you. Remember, they’ve dissected bodies as medical students.

Actually you raise a good point there as corpses can produce post mortem farts.

Toddlerteaplease · 25/09/2025 22:43

She’ll have forgotten it already!

outerspacepotato · 25/09/2025 22:42

If you had a poopsplosion that sounded like something blew up and blew off your diaper and hit the wall 20 feet away, she'd probably remember.

A fart or two, naw.

You should educate yourself then - homeless people are homeless because they don’t engage with authorities for various reasons (trauma, mental illness, drugs etc). They’re not on the streets because people escaping persecution from other countries have taken their spaces. Ffs

You should also educate yourself people are also homeless due to not finding adequate housing landlords kicking them out for no good reason to sell maybe who knows? You’re clearly not educated yourself and those that arrive illegally shouldn’t get housed in our country end of day should be instantly deported

I had issues after I tore into my bum hole giving birth to my son and as a result have farted at a wide and varied selection of health professionals. I’ll never forget the nice registrar who sewed me up coming to see me on the ward round. I did about a 20-second rumbling fart just as he was explaining very seriously about how I’d had to have 3 litres of blood transfused.

Doctors are great. Academically excellent their whole lives, scramble to the top of their career and still aren’t above sticking their finger up a bum or getting farted at on a ward round.

Go to your appointment. They’ve dealt with worse.

I hope you feel better soon ❤️

IcedPurple · 25/09/2025 22:41

Was it a stinker OP?

Because I doubt the doctor would care about a simple fart. A smelly one might be a different story, though as everyone has said she'll have seen, heard and smelled much worse.

DarkLion · 25/09/2025 22:41

I’m a nurse and I can promise you we don’t care, it’s a bodily function. I’m a ward nurse and it’s pretty much a daily occurrence when people turn over for us to clean them. You’re our patients and we’re professionals, much like the gp, we trained in the body and don’t give it a second thought. We all do it!

VK456 · 25/09/2025 22:40

I’m a retired nurse and have seen and heard various things over the years. I can offer you comfort in that the doctor herself will have most likely done things during her career that’s she’s more embarrassed about than you!

Itiswhysofew · 25/09/2025 22:39

She's a doctor. She's seen and heard it all😊

jetlag92 · 25/09/2025 22:38

I had a patient vomit in my face once. She obviously apologised, but she was unwell and as a HCP I help with people who are ill.. and they sometimes vomit.

Happygolucky314 · 25/09/2025 22:37

BrisPerm · 25/09/2025 22:10

I absolutely stand by that comment

I love you for this and don’t even know you haha

Birdh0use · 25/09/2025 21:14

They will probably remember the trumps, but won't remember who it was!

Yes, while the rest of us can't put a name to a face, doctors can't put a face to the fart.

BeardieWeirdie · 25/09/2025 22:37

I’m not sure if this is common or not but I could not keep myself from farting - repeatedly - in the faces of the poor, wonderful midwives who had delivered my baby at home while they were stitching me up. The shame. At least you had your pants on!

MissyPants · 25/09/2025 22:35

Oh they will have seen much worse, but.....🤣

SurvivalInstinctsOfABakedPotato · 25/09/2025 22:35

You're fine... I once did it in a routine smear

I would have been embarrassed but I was laughing so much I set the nurse off laughing

It's a body and it's literally what bodies are made to do

It's literally no different to sneezing!!
