I had to go to GP earlier with ongoing bowel issues. She asked me to lay down so she could listen to my abdomen. I laid down, she pressed the stethoscope onto my stomach and I ended up involuntarily farting loudly. She actually jumped back at the sound. Absolutely mortified, I start to apologise and my stomach starts making loud squeaky noises and I end up farting again mid sentence. She remained professional throughout but I’m so embarrassed. I have to go back tomorrow and I’m dreading a) seeing her again and b) it happening again.

DH says will have forgotten all about it. Is he right or just being nice? I feel like cancelling the appointment

As others have said, the GP will have heard, seen and smelt far worse. Plus your windy, grumbling bowel has made a point for you; you've got symptoms and they need investigating. Hopefully, there's nothing too serious going on, but if there is, the sooner these things are caught, the better, so keep that appointment.

It's not the same, because cats don't care, but some years ago, we had one with a lot of respiratory problems and very productive and powerful sneezes. I think the vet thought we were exaggerating until the day our little lady underlined the point in the surgery. Two huge, snotty plumes shot across the examination table and from then, the sceptical looks were no more. 😆

If it makes you feel better - when I was being assessed by the neurology reg for my epilepsy I was having to follow all sorts of instructions with my tongue etc. I totally misunderstood one and tried to lick her glove. 🤷‍♀️ So embarrassing and I still don’t really know what happened…

…. I’m a fairly experience nurse!

MinnieMou5e · 25/09/2025 22:14

lol please keep in mind you’ll laugh about this in time to come and at least you didn’t follow through!

Don’t cancel as your health is too important.

Blanketpolicy · 25/09/2025 22:14

I farted in the consultants face when I was sat up on the edge of the bed back arched backwards when they were lent cross the bed trying to put an epidural needle in my lower back 😳 (I blame too much gas and air!)

All he said was a muffled “don’t move” 🤣

I’m sure she’s had worse happen!

EmeraldShamrock000 · 25/09/2025 22:12

I'm sure it is on the low scale of offensive for the GP.
I was having my eyebrows, eyelash tint.
My stomach started like a washing machine gurgling, I really thought I was going to let out a huge fart.

Haveaproperty · 25/09/2025 22:11

Well in one day they could have had their fingers up someones bum, looked inside a fanny, poked a load of rotten tonsels, cleaned a dressing full of puss and pulled earwax out of a dirty ear, inspected a jar of poop, iced a wart and inspected someones fungus toenails. So your farts were likely a welcome change from all that. I wouldnt worry about it.

You know what else is disgusting? Putting illegals up in hotels whilst British homeless sleep on the streets.

maybe you were farting out your ignorance - that might be on your record?

I absolutely stand by that comment

My friend is a GP. She told me she sees multiple bum holes every day and is so unbothered by it it’s just like looking at someone’s knee or checking their tonsils. So I really wouldn’t worry about it, they’ve seen (and heard!) it all.

It's a funny old job, isn't it!

Horsie · 25/09/2025 22:09

I've noticed that there are two words that are commonly misspelled on the internet, I would say MOST of the time. Fair warning: I'm making it my mission to correct this.

To be fazed by something, not phased.
To lose something, not loose.

Don't worry OP, your doctor's seen a lot worse!

OP, please don’t worry and absolutely do not cancel your appointment.

A few years back, I went to see my GP because of a really heavy bleeding that wouldn’t stop. I bled everywhere during the exam. The little blue paper towel they put underneath me did absolutely nothing, they had to clean both the bed and the floor. I had another appointment 2 days later and was mortified to be seeing the same GP. She asked me why I was being so sheepish, I said something like “because of what happened last time” and she looked at me with a completely blank expression, asking what happened. I explained and she was so reassuring and lovely, saying that other than obvious health concerns, these things do not phase them at all.

Hope you feel better soon!

fartooembarrassedtoreturn · 25/09/2025 22:07

But…did you queef practically in her face whilst doing a smear….theres always someone worse.

chin up @BrisPermhope you get sorted soon

DontReinMeIn · 25/09/2025 22:06

You can’t control it!

my dad did it on his gp who was about to examine his prostate! In a few years you’ll look back and giggle about it, I promise

LadeOde · 25/09/2025 22:06

At least you farted, that's a good sign. It's when you're no longer farting that you need to be worried.

Meep2024 · 25/09/2025 22:06

Please don't worry OP. There's very few things that'd shock a GP. She'd have forgotten all about it by the time they'd finished the shift. Please don't cancel the appointment either. Our health is important.

I'm a doctor OP. This honestly would not phase me very much in the grand scheme of things. At the very most I might have a little laugh about it (in private.) But not in a laughing at the patient way, more that it was just a funny and awkward situation.

Please don't cancel your appointment! A bit of farting is totally normal. We often have much worse encounters with the human body.

Faze, not phase. 👍(I mean to be helpful.)

bananafake · 25/09/2025 22:05

Don't worry OP, I saw a doctor about breast discharge. She asked me to sqeeze the nipple and it unexpectedly sprayed out like one of those joke clown flowers and just missed her. We both laughed but I blushed a bit. We can't control our bodily functions sometimes...

Shakemesexy · 25/09/2025 22:05

And how do you feel talking about it - enjoy it? Her head was so close right!

OP I've worked in healthcare a long time and honestly the GP will not be phased at all. I remember once a newly-paralysed patient, quite young, soiling himself without realising it while we were doing his rehab. He was absolutely mortified and was so upset - however we knew it was normal and absolutely nothing to be ashamed of, reassured him and dealt with it discretely. Another patient was chatting to him a few days later, and was full on laughing and telling him about how he'd shat himself too, it's so annoying isn't it, and it really made me think - their attitudes were both so different. The one laughing it off made the one that was mortified feel 100 times better. But never in my 20 years of healthcare have I ever been phased by a fart, nor have I seen anyone else be. They will see so much worse, honestly!
Did the doctor say anything afterwards? I'm sure they will have just reassured you and laughed it off, surely? Don't overthink it. They absolutely won't have thought anything of it. Please don't give it another thought! And don't cancel your appointment, that would be so silly.

when I apologised she said “no need to apologise, this is what you’re here for”

she was lovely

I remember as a student nurse on a ward round many years ago. the patient had undergone bowel surgery a few days earlier. Consultant wanting to check if his bowel was returning back to normal asked him “are you passing flatus?”. The patient says “eh?” So the consultant repeats the question.

The patient just looks perplexed so the senior registrar leans over and says to the patient “have you farted?”.

Patient replies with some indignation “no I’ve not - it must have been one of you lot”. 🤣🤣🤣

🤣🤣🤣

Unicorn34 · 25/09/2025 22:02

Reminds me of a joke many years ago about a man who went to the Dr about bad, smelly flatulence, the Dr asked him to bend over and as the man did, he farted really loudly... when the man straightened up he saw that the Dr had a long pole in his hand. "What the hell are you going to do with that?" he asks.... "open the window" says the Dr!

lol I once went for bowel issues and was babysitting someone’s child.
the child shat upon on my leg
the dr thought I had shat myself and gave me paper towels. I felt my soul leave my body as the liquid poo dribbled down my leg.

See, that one does make a great anecdote 🤣
