AIBU to think that Digital ID will not stop illegal immigration, and nor is it a good idea?

How will this prevent boat crossings?

You’d have to be a Starmerite to like them. All the other parties are against, plus some in his own party. And providers have pointed out issues.

Black/grey economy working is a big draw of coming to the uk.

With digital ID there becomes an increasing drive for all employees to be registered, it gets harder and harder for people to work without ID, thus making the UK no more appealing than other european countries who already have it.

There’s already checks. Digital ID doesn’t change this. Why would it?
if an employer isn’t checking your passport then they’re not going to check a digital ID.

I know of a few people working as delivery drivers for shops. All cash in hand. Obviously none have been checked.

The petition has had a response.

Basically the government have said "tough shit we're introducing it". They have said it won't be compulsory, but will be required for several things such as the right to work. Employers will have to do "right to work checks" therefore anyone wanting to work in the UK will need to have one.

I feel fuming as would like them to have at least acknowleged the huge number of signatures the petition gained and the clear outcry for a proper consultation on the matter.

I will not stop is illegal immigrants coming the government are trying to use this as an excuse to say it's a good idea. It will not make any difference. People that want to employ illegal immigrants will continue to do so and cash in hand jobs will remain!

They got far too used to to the control during Covid and liked it too much. Hence the tough shit we are introducing it.

Authoritarian leftist doing authoritarian leftist things. Great.

We already have right to work checks. This is nonsense. Even Plantir guy has said it’s a bad idea which hasn’t been tested at the ballot box.

More integrity than Starmer. People are showing in by-election votes what they think of Labour.

Pissing about around the edges more like. None of this is having an effect and the digital id will have no discernible effect anyway. If it's that good, why does France have so many migrants? The government want these people to come here. They're practically laying out the red carpet. The demographics in my northern village have completely changed since Labour came to power.

France has so many migrants because Algeria was a colony and is a stones throw away- I mean we don’t get many Venezuelan immigrants in Europe (but prob will soon thanks to Trump blocking his borders)

I think the companies are still supposed to check they're eligible to work in the UK though?

As if they'll bother about a trifle like that ...

They do. It's the drivers on rented accounts that are dodgy Nor ones with accounts in their own name

So do you actually have any knowledge of the system or are you bleating a narrative

Well in reality the delivery apps are t " employing " anyone. The riders are all self employed

There's very little difference between employing illegal immigrants deliberately and designing your business model around cheap, precarious, zero-rights labour that creates the conditions for illegality to flourish. These companies have no investment in society and will only care when a severe labour shortage forces them to care.

Yip. Apparently there was a push to bring people up here and it's overwhelmed some communities in terms of infrastructure and community cohesion so it's been halted in my area for the time being. We have a Reform controlled council and they said enough is enough. It's a poor and deprived part of the country and people are struggling day to day.

I'm not picking a fight here but how big/small is your village that the demographic has been 'completely changed' in one year?

I know the North East is overwhelmingly white and there are pockets of deprivation but why shouldn't you take a share of refugees... there are poor and deprived areas in London too!

Low income families struggle day to day all over the UK.

Customers could ask to see driving licence or id. Why don’t they - I would.
I might start asking for id for the many different delivery guys who comeby

expecting the council to run around waylaying ta is is an expensive way to do it the public should report suspicions -at least that’s a start. Write to your mp see what they suggest

Puzzledandpissedoff · 29/09/2025 10:50

The problem occurs when registered (delivery) drivers then " rent" their accounts out to others

Unfortunately the same applies with taxis and private hire vehicles, @RubySquid

Realising there's more money to be made by providing a 24/7 service, there's a major issue in my own area with drivers simply handing the keys to their brother/cousin/whoever, even to the extent of cars turning up with no plates or any other type of registration

And it goes without saying that the local council won't touch it ...

They probably feel fed up, but how are delivery companies getting away with employing illegal migrants? Nobody in the government is capable of addressing this? Id cards won't make a jot of difference to the thousands of employers who are quite happily getting away with employing people illegally. If they're getting away with it now, they'll get away with it when id is introduced.

The so called id card is about tracking and controlling the existing population, not controlling immigration.

When Starmer was asked in an interview would he be loyal to Davos or Parliament he answered Davos. This malignant entity has absolutely no loyalty to our country and does not intend to put us first, or even second. He's an utter snake (no insult to snakes).

The delivery companies are not employing illegals deliberately. If you actually KNEW anything about how they would then maybe you would realise this.

To become a driver on the appa then you need to prove right to work, and prove insurance for vehicles( not pushbikes). You then get a sterling criminal record check . Once you've passed all these you can then get an account

The problem occurs when registered drivers then " rent" their accounts out to others.

The companies are now trying to overcome this by making rider/drivers do video is before starting shifts. Some of them then randomly turfing you off the app and you have to do the video id again before continuing .

So the companies are obviously trying to sort this But always someone bending the rules

It may be 'pissing around the edges'. It's too soon to tell if it's too little, too late as some of the measures I have listed have yet to be put in place while others have only just begun. Posters on MN who have worked or do work for the Home Office have cited ID as the one thing that would most act as a deterrent. The UK is particularly targeted because of the ease of securing work in the black economy. All major European countries are struggling with this issue to a greater or lesser extent. Many of the migrants in France are waiting to come to the UK.

It makes no sense either to blame Labour, as thousands of migrants came in on small boats under the Conservatives, or to say the government wants people to come here. The government wants to stay in power. Promoting such an unpopular measure would lose it power in 2029 (when it will probably lose anyway). The UK's debt virtually equals its GDP. It makes no sense for the government to actively increase a hotel bill already totalling £2 billion a year.

For typo

I'm feeling rather annoyed with Reform, Rupert Lowe and Tommy Robinson groupies rubbishing every move the government makes to 'stop the boats' and making snide comments about the new Home Secretary's religion. It's a complex problem - pull factors, gangs, ease of finding work in the UK - and different approaches will, separately and collectively, start to make inroads.

So far, we have: one-in, one-out deal with France; changes to the interpretation of human rights legislation; change to asylum application process so that all relevant factors must be declared on entering the country; change to German law to criminalise supply of inflatable boats; pending change to French law to allow gendarmes to intercept boats up to 300m from the shore; the ability to complete asylum claims documentation from outside the UK; increased numbers of deportation; likelihood of Ministry of Defence estate being used to house migrants; closure of migrant hotels by 2029; repatriation of criminals; and digital ID cards to reduce illegal working; negotiation on new returns agreements. I think Shabana Mahmood will go further, changing the guidelines on ECHR provision as appied in UK courts more radically. She's also making sensible remarks about the threat irregular migration is posing to community cohesion, and the risks the current hostile environment poses for 'people who look like her.

ID cards, provided the technology works, will make a difference as they will enable the government to identify employers with implausible low staffing levels ie those employing irregular labour, and take action against them. The ease of finding irregular work because we have no ID cards us what makes the UK particularly attractive.

So far numbers are still rising and there were three deaths in the channel this week, including a child.

A lot of this is for headline copy which isn’t impacting much.
